This weekend has largely been a loss prep or gardening wise, but I did add another five gallons of gas storage. This coming weekend I'll add one more to reach my goal.

How is going with you folks?

I bought some chicken breasts to can, and more spaghetti sauce to add to the stash! I got a few cans of soup on clearance too. I'm re-filling some of the pop bottles that we emptied since my water supply was lower that what I'm comfortable with. Our water came in real handy when we were working on my son's house before his water was turned on. We hauled boxes of two liter bottles every time we went there. I brought all the empty bottles back home, but hadn't gotten around to filling them all yet.
I'm going to make an out of town shopping trip later this week to pick up a few sales at other stores.

I didn't get much accomplished this week. I did buy another 5 gal container and filled it with gas. I hope to have 50 gallons stored before the next hurricane. I also bought 200 rounds of 9mm and 200 rounds of 45acp to add to the collection. Will try to accomplish more in the coming weeks.

We've been canning pretty heavily. So far there are 82 quarts of squash put up and 14 quarts of rattlesnake beans. We have two more bags of beans to do in the morning (probably 6 - 8 more quarts worth) and the blueberry and blackberry picking will start tomorrow also. Other than that I don't know what this week will hold. I do need to pick up at least one mantle for our Aladdin lamp. Hopefully we can get that done tomorrow.

Bought a CB radio for my Jeep and got in the mail my new food dehydrator, my orange tree has about 20 new oranges on it, this is kind of late in the season i think.

CPAP

I bought three marine deep cycle batteries to power the CPAP. When charged I should be able to 'last' up to two weeks if the electric fails for a hurricane or 'other' unforseen events. Ten days without electricity for Isabel from 9/18/03 to 9/28/03 made an indelible impression on me. Honeyvillegrain.com sent out a 10% off the entire store http://store.honeyvillegrain.com/ and the $4.49 shipping anywhere for the/an entire order has me thinking about more grains after reading the WORLD is down to 57 days reserve. The Kansas hard red winter wheat harvest looks very reduced as far as yield and probably quality as well. I'm trying to get some friends to just go ahead and order SOMETHING from them as a future food reserve. Time will tell if they will actually do anything at all. I guess we all know how that works don't we?

Well, I've started a pretty major long-term prep this week :
http://www.timebomb2000.com/vb/showthread.php?t=201188
Hopefully it'll be paid off and something built on it in 4 or 5 years.

So everyone, please try and keep things stumbling along until I've got things sorted, ok?

Thanks

And as for other stuff - while I've been on holidays, I've worked out a set of pretty accurate 'economy' speeds on the new car to get a desired range. Max distance to empty is at about 65km/hr - 1700km on a 60L tank. But at the other extreme it can easily go over 1000km at 90-95km/hr which is just under highway speed in Oz. With another 20l can of diesel that I have, DTE ranges from a max of about 2200km (at 65km/hr) to about 1200km driving normally at the limit. Driving at 150km/hr (1.5x limit) gives a range of about 700-800km.

So if things get really bad while bugging out, I can pick a speed/gear combo have a known distance to empty. Distance to my new retreat from here is about 1300km, so a moderate cruising speed of 80km/hr would get me there in one tank..... and about 17 hours of non-stop driving! So if you ever see me bugging out, you'll know things are pretty desperate here in Australia.

Right! Pistols at dawn it is then!
Er, we'll have to make it my place, my passport's expired. Sorry.

And anyway, I'm trumping a Mountain House purchase with a REAL mountain house purchase  - that's going to be pretty hard to beat.

A Wednesday night bump off of page seven for the midweek folks.

Picked up thirteen Cuckoo Maran chicks this evening. They're in the brooder happy as clams.

Dug up some potatoes, since the plants started to die off. Only got 10 ~ 12 pounds for the entire row. ~ sigh ~ Although my blackberries are starting to ripen and I should be picking any day now. And it appears it's going to be a bumper crop this year for the blackberries!

Picked up a chinese made no brand name 8 cell LED flashlight at the flea market for $3. Uses 3 AAA batteries, is water proof (well it has a rubber gasket), and it is bright. Think I'll still carry my Mini-Mag with the Night-Ize LED kit on my belt, but this will be good for the glove compartment, or in the nightstand drawer as a backup to the big Mag-Light.

Bought 2 guinea hens too at the flea market. Couldn't help myself. LOL.

And we picked up a bunch of hygiene stuff this week to top off what we had in that area. A couple of cases of toilet paper (45 rolls each case), a few bottles of shampoo, bars of soap, a handful of tooth brushes, a couple of tubes of tooth paste, and 2 boxes of q-tips.

When the guineas drive you mad can I have your stuff?

Man, those Maran chicks were really making a racket when I checked on them this morning. Nothing wrong, they were just having fun.

Been canning more squash (80 something quarts now -hubby wants to make it to 100 lol) and rattlesnake beans (24 quarts so far). The butter peas are about ready so will start on them today or tomorrow.

We went shopping yesterday and added several items to the medical box including a new, more extensive, first aid kit for the car. Btw, we went to Walmart looking for distilled water (they never have any in stock anymore) and looked over their shelves of health and beauty aids. They have Airborne now for only $5 so got some of that. It's supposed to work really well.

I finally bought myself 2 books that I have given as gifts:

Making the Best of Basics - 10th edition &
Where There is No Doctor

Excellent reading!

AWRIIIGHT!! Another Cuckoo owner! We got 12 in the brooder, along w/ 12 Americaunas - and 3 brrods of "mutts" on the ground of 11, 8, and 8. One more hen setting 10 eggs due up in about a week and a half.

Yeah - this week has been a bit of a prep-wash here as well. We're devoting time to our goat-raisers' Field Day this weekend, where we'll be discussing NAIS and other such stuff.

Forgot to add we did pick up two extra mantles for the Aladdin lamp. That's something we've been needing to do.

Also wanted to congratulate Guy Incognito on his land purchase. It sounds beautiful!!

Kind of a slow week here too. Sales in the stores are terrible and we are pretty fully stocked anyway. Did get another 12 pack of tp and a 200 oz laundry detergent, a few pounds of barley and some cans of rice and beans. Looking forward to getting away this weekend and getting some R&R.

Putting in time on studying for my Net+ Cert Exam.. Does that count?

Picked up GB, Porkloin and chicken to portion and freeze. Got another case of water, and apple juice - all from Sam's.

Topping off all batteries,.. and coverted a $7 Solar flash light from Biglots into a solar battery charger/flashlight. I'll use the batteries to swap with ones in the SAME NOAA weather alert radio.

We are now getting heavy rain and a good bit of lightning. Missed a good morning to get topsoil delivered. but we can use the rain too.

Been putting together a list for a big shopping trip - noticed I was getting low on soap and toothpaste, among other things.

Looks like I am going to have to buy fruit this year. My fruit tress have very little fruit on them - with a late frost and then a hail storm, not much fruit left at all. A bad storm this weekend damaged many of the plants in my garden. Some are starting to recover, but at least there is still plenty of time to replant.

A friend is coming over next weekend to do some canning. Guess we will have to go to the farmers market to get fruits and veggies to can.

Well, my 50# of flour tortilla flour arrive yesterday from Honeyville Grains along with a case of whole egg powder. Also from Lehmans an old fashioned carpet sweeper that has been greatly improved from the days of old and a donut, biscuit cutter. Today I bought 2 cases of canned pears at Save a Lot and two bottles of pancake syrup. That makes about 10 on the shelf along with about a gallon of local honey and a couple of qts of local cane syrup. Figure if nothing else we will eat pancakes. lol

The only prep item I have added is broccoli out of the garden into my freezer. Pretty slow week here. I did purchase a set of enamel coated cast iron pans. I guess that could count, huh?! LOL!

Now if I can only figure out where to put them!

Mainly working on the new garden this week. Been transplanting melons, cantaloupes, butternut squash, and pumpkin plants from the old garden to the new garden. Good Bye jap grass. Feed store has been running Bonnie plants on sale, buy one get two free. So I picked up several more tomatos, egg plant, tabasco peppers, and bell peppers. Got them planted this morning. Keep forgetting to pick up more okra seed.

got back monday from a 5 day camping trip. tested out the 5 gal bucket-sawdust toilet. Had the 5 gal bucket toilet and a 5 gal pail of sawdust. A little sawdust in the necessary bucket to start. Worked fine. No odor in tent. One person usage for 5 days. Will definitely have a few of these on hand at home.

We canned chicken, and dreamed of canning veggies. We canned sausage gravy and thought some more about canning veggies. Finally got so obsessed with canning veggies that I re-canned a #10 can of tomato sauce, one of pizza sauce, and one of spaghetti sauce, into pint jars.

Dehydrated some cinnamon apples.

Got 20 jars of 2 lb. 3 oz. peaches. Thank you for the heads up on that one Dinghy!

Got more toilet paper, paper towels, garbage bags, and rice.

Planted more in the garden, and will replant when the water subsides. Dug a trench for water to drain from the garden. Maybe I'll go back and fill in the trench and plant rice.

You made me smile, Gizmo. Good for you for getting all the goodies. :D

I had a request from my 2 1/2 year old granddaughter......she told her preschool that her Granny made the BEST jam......so, I guess I had better head to the strawberry fields and get some for jam.

This weeks preps was finding more room to store things(out eye sight)...bought some brackets and a package of inexpensive panelling..made some shelves for inside dressers...the space behind there is amazing...and underneath the bottom drawer....now I have more room in pantry to purchase more items....I had also filled in the space behind my headboard of my bedroom set...

Put up 36 quarts of tomatos last weekend. Working on a second batch today. Looks like we are going to be putting up just about the same amount again today. Also have lucked up. My aunt died last November, and my Grandmother was put in a nursing home. My uncle came over for dinner the other night, and told me I could have all of the canning supplies they had. There is a ton of antique canning equipment, and hundreds of jars. Might donate a little of it to my sister in law, who preps like we do.

This too shall pass.
I've been busy for several days helping with a HUGE church yard sale (am home now and crashed for the rest of the day!), and scored some good stuff. I got three dozen wide-mouth canning jars, two sturdy carry-on size bags to replace the daypacks I was using for BOB's (their zippers broke first time I used them), three really nice jackets (backpacker/outdoorsy styles) for $1 each, several books (veterinary stuff for at home, plant science, that kind of thing), a couple of organizers for little odds and ends like buttons or seeds. I also talked to a LOT of people about goats (I had three of my babies at the sale), and passed out sale flyers to quite a few people, so hopefully will get some sold soon (I need to buy hay!). To me, educating people about goats (or any other means of producing your own food) is a big part of prepping. I was surprised, though, at how many people said they'd had goats at some point or other, especially the older folks (milk supply during the Depression?).

The neatest thing was this afternoon, and I wish I'd had my camera with me. One of my friends at church is a licensed falconer, and has a propogation permit. She has three baby falcons (Gyrprairie, she called them -- they are hybrids), and brought them with, as they need to be fed constantly. They are about a month old, and still covered with fuzz, although you can see the adult feathers coming in. She said in a couple of weeks they'll be ready to fly. They were really neat -- I had never realized what big eyes they have, in comparison to the size of their heads. Probably absolutely nothing to do with prepping, but I keep having urgings to ask Carol to teach me how to become a falconer!

Kathleen (who needs a falcon to take care of like she needs another hole in the head!)

Friday I picked up five blueberry bushes to replace some that I had lost and a new variety of blackberry to trial. Added another five gallons of gas storage which puts me at my goal now.

Also picked up a CO2 pistol so that I can stay in practice. I don't get to go shooting very often any more so this is a way of keeping my hand in. About the same size and shape as my .45. Buying the gas cartridges in the twenty five count box keeps the cost down to where it's less than half the cost of shooting .22s.

Spent today working on the electric fence system for henyard as well as a shelter to store the charger and battery in along with a couple of cans of feed.

The Maran chicks are doing well and the Silkies too.

The already established flock laid their first eggs today - three of them. I added the months wrong back in February so I was taken by surprise when I found the eggs as I wasn't expecting them to start until the middle of next month. Fortunately I already had a nest house built that just needed some minor refurbishing and cleaning. No more yucky store bought eggs for us! We're back in the egg business!

I canned 13 pints of chicken tonight. I'll have broth cooking over night and will can it tomorrow. I had hoped to have it all done today, but it didn't work out that way.
I added a few more packs of soap to the stash. Nothing good on sale again this week!
I found a couple good deals at the yard sales this weekend. We got a cast iron dutch oven with a glass lid for $3 and we are giving it to our daughter for her preps. I got a dozen quart canning jars for $2. And a Revere Ware frying pan at one sale, and a lid to fit it at another, all for .75! I love these yard sales!!!

We spent the last four days out at the 'retreat'.

Planted three pecan trees. I'm not sure if they will produce in coastal PNW, but I have the space, so I'm giving it a try.

Picked enough salmonberries to put up about eight quarts of jam. That was a lot of berry picking.

Began digging a trench to install water pipe out into my orchard. I need about eight hundred feet of trenching and piping. Doing it by hand because my established plantings make it impossible to get a trencher close enough. Its going to take a few more weekends to say the least. It will beat rolling out my five hundred foot hose every other week in the summer though. :groucho:

While I'm installing the pipe, I am also going to install electric outlets in the orchard with the idea of being able to plug in an electric mower out there as gas continues to get more expensive.
