Well, the store didn't have either type of roast I was planning to buy in stock, so I guess I got out of having to can anything today. We'll see what they have on Saturday - I'm going to run up to the orchard that is near there anyway, so it won't be an extra trip.

Double check the boxes on any canning jars and jar lids you buy to make sure they are made in the USA, Sherree - I haven't looked at the ones I see in the local stores to make sure they are of US manufacture. The brand of jars that Dollar General had in were in a blue and white box, and were made in China.

The Golden Harvest lids I have bought this year all say 'Made in USA'. The older GH lids (last year and prior) had an American flag on the end flap of the box, and said 'Hearthmark, Inc', and 'Jarden Home Brands'. The boxes I bought this year have a much smaller American flag, have instructions in both French and English, and say Newell Brands and 2020 Rubbermain Incorporated on the boxes, so there must have been a buy out.

Rural King had in a 3 pallets with Ball brand jelly jars, and a smaller quantity of wide mouth pint and 1/2 gallon jars. The half gallons were stacked 2 high, the pints 8 high, and the jelly jars 3 high - I took a photo with my phone. I haven't been there for a week, so will have to see what they have when I get off work Saturday morning.

I bought multiple cases of Golden Harvest jars several years back; they were cheaper than Ball brand. They are a bit lighter than Ball or Kerr, but I have had no problems with them. I use them for both pressure canning and water bath canning. They were all Made in USA. I think that it possible that Golden Harvest may be made by someone else now - check the ends of the cases for info. I twisted my knee on a rock in the lot where the taco truck was parked so I'm not much wanting to go down stairs to look at the cases I have, but will after the knee isn't annoying me. I think I'm going to go take a nap; maybe it'll feel better after that :)

I just checked my case. It has an American flag, and says, "Made in the USA"!

It's raining! And hailing. Small but strong storms all around us too.
Working on laundry, washing up winter clothes and donating a ton of clothes.
Working on another Walmart order. Looked for the 1/2 gallon jars but they are out of stock except for the 53.00 ones from a third party vendor. Yeah, no.

I only found the 1/2 gallon jars for the same price as in store for shipping one time.

The 1/2 gallon jars actually made it to my house. I'm pleasantly surprised. With these two plus the one I purchased in store on Sunday, that's 3 more cases of 1/2 jars. I'm using them up quickly what with all of my dry storage going on.

I just jar'd up two 4# bags of tortilla flour in 4 1/2 gallon jars. And I had a package of yellow corn meal mix that filled one 1/2 gallon jar and one quart jar. Glad to get these two things out of the way. All of this is going to the she shed because I have no room in the house.

My scatica is almost healed this morning. I can barely feel it. I'm doing laundry to hang on the clothesline, but I'll get Cary to carry the load out to the line for me. I don't want to do any lifting right now.

Watered everything again this morning. We got an electrical storm last night, but no rain from it. It was bright and loud, though. Woke us up around 11pm. Today's forecast high of 98 with heat index 108. Our temps exceeded the forecast, yesterday. We had a temp of 101 with heat index of 111.

Dog was barking his head off, yesterday. He would come to the front door, and back out to the fence he would go barking again. I finally got up to go see what had him so upset. He ran to the fence that has a running rose bush covering it. It's pretty thick. It looked like he had something treed in the rose bush up on the fence. I told Cary to go see what it was (I was scared to). Turned out to be a groundhog! The thing ran off and under Cary's shop. I told Cary that's probably what ate my cucumbers, instead of a rabbit. Crows are eating all my pecans. I opened the back doors the other morning when I first got up, and I know 25-30 crows flew out of it. The whole tree was black with crows. Cary and I both need some target practice!

Glad your sciatica is better, mine is worse than ever. I went outside and the pain was so bad I almost fainted. I had a heck of a time getting back to the house. I took an antivert for the dizziness, although I think that was from the extreme pain. As soon as I get back to my recliner I'm going to slather my leg with Ouch linament. I guess I'm just going to have to stay off of it for the time being, which means I get nothing done.

I hate to hear that, Judy. I really had to pamper my back and leg, plus using lots of BioFreeze. I love that stuff. It's always worked for me. I stayed in my recliner most of the time, too. I can still feel a twinge when I move a certain way, but overall, it's much improved, today. Hope you feel better, too, really soon.

Make sure you rub it on your buttock, over the sciatic nerve.

Also, if this is common for you, consider Googling the appropriate exercises and stretches... they really do help, and they aren't difficult. Hope you feel better soon!

Spent the last few days cleaning out and organizing the shop. Didnt realize it had gotten as bad as it did until I look at the pile of scrap and trash for the dump. Have buckets of tools to go through and organize that came from my grandfathers house and a friends house when he moved. Got the projects lined up for the fall and winter.

Don't dump any steel/decent metal. DS is a machinist... he says a single cube of stainless steel stock went from $70 to $1000! (No, not a typo)!

Hubby’s sciatic is really bothering him. I’m sure it has nothing to do with lifting the washer and dryer ( ) - I haven’t heard of biofeeeze but will look into it. I mentioned he should schedule a doctor appointment, and he replied “probably so”. I’m guessing he will go on a bit longer in pain before he does.

I get the BioFreeze at Walmart. A good friend of Cary's from work, who also has Lupus, recommended it to me. I have used it ever since. It might not work for everyone, but it works wonders for me. Not only for the sciatica, but also for inflammation in my joints when they flare up. I like the kind in the roll-on bottle. I use the roller to massage the sciatic nerve. Hurts like all get out when applying the pressure, but it helps to massage it.

Doing some much needed house cleaning, today, since I have been taking it easy for the past few days. I also washed another large load of Cary's work pants to hang on the line. Cary took the basket out for me. It was heavy, and I'm still not lifting anything right now. I gathered more tomatoes and bell peppers. One of the peppers and some of the tomatoes will be used in my homemade spaghetti sauce tonight. I'll make a big pot, tonight, and we'll have left over spaghetti tomorrow night. Cook once, eat twice.

Still hot and no rain!

I always made my own spaghetti sauce, but one time I used a jar of sauce from the store. My youngest said, Mom, that tastes a lot better than yours. That's the only time he ever complained about my cooking. I never made sauce from scratch again. I guess that's why I never use tomato sauce or tomato paste any more.

DH like Prego, but since I pay for it I use Hunts.

Cary loves spaghetti, but doesn't like the kind of sauce that comes from a jar. I have always made my own. It was trial and error in the beginning, but now, he loves my homemade sauce. I don't even use a recipe. Just a little bit of this, and a little bit of that, using my own tomatoes, tomato sauce, onions, bell peppers, and spices. I always mix it all up with browned and drained ground beef. He likes a meaty sauce, so I use a 2.25lb pack of ground beef. It makes a big pot.

I made mine from tomato products and spices. I don't like peppers so I would never use that, and probably didn't use onions because the kids didn't like them.

Some people put peppers in red beans, but in all of the red beans I've eaten in New Orleans they never had green peppers, if they had I would not have gained as much weight as I did from eating cheap red beans and rice. There use to be a little hole in the wall diner on Bourbon street called the Scoop and Skillet, they had cheap red beans and rice and then there was Buster Holmes that was famous for their red beans, no peppers.

My quick and easy "cheater" version of red beans and rice recipe calls for chopped bell peppers. I also include smoked sausage in it, too. I bet the real New Orleans version is better, but I've never had the real thing.

LOL, its why I gained 20 pounds that I've never been able to take off. And Buster Holmes had the best southern food.

I'd love to try the real thing! Maybe some day. We went to Natchez, MS. a few years back, and wanted to drive on over to New Orleans, but it was so dang hot we decided not to. I would have loved to have tried some genuine New Orleans quisine!

I went to the local food lion - so eye opening to see the increasing prices.
Every time I go to a store, I pick up a pasta and sauce as well as a protein (canned meat, beans, soup, etc), 2 veggies, and 2 “other” items (rice sides, condiments, cereal, etc). This is an addition to my grocery list which includes things I am replacing as I use them up. Those “extra 7 items” are quickly building.

I then went to dollar general to use my $5 off $25 purchase. Some more otc meds (two generic Tylenol and two generic advil), four cans tuna, pasta (2), body wash (2- I’m definitely up to a two year supply), dish soap, some seeds (three lettuce one basil).

The story of the ant and the grasshopper came to mind as I was shopping today.

Slow and steady ……

Husband got paid, so we went grocery shopping. Back in the mark down bin they had a bunch of Cafe Bustelo 7 oz instant coffee for 1.99. We took about half of it. I like that it's in glass jars, not plastic.
I've gotten a few of that coffee in glass jars. I also have some of my favorite community instant coffee, but they are in plastic jars. I'm thinking of repackaging them in glass jars.

Did a produce run, needed tomatoes for sandwiches, peaches and red onions. Local stand and prices are decent.
Our sour cherry tree has a fungus that we are going to treat. Hopefully it works. It's a beautiful little tree. The pear tree has a good crop so far.
We got hail with our 2 inches of rain. The hail did a number on my tomatoes, peppers and cucs. Holes all through the leaves. Ugh.
Still working on getting the pantry organized and doing more laundry.
Have a good weekend!

Thunderstorms are in the forecast starting around 5 p.m. and lasting until midnight. Praying we get some moisture. It is desperately dry. I'm talking the soil is powder. My garden is very sad/bad due to lack of moisture and heat. Town does not want us doing outside watering so I don't other than a watering can now and again. I planted radishes, lettuce, beets and carrots last week so have been watering them and beets, radishes and a few carrots are up. No lettuce as yet. Germination in general has been really bad this year.

I have summer squash that I'm going to shred and dehydrate. A couple handfuls of green beans and lettuce to eat. Pulled my onions and have them drying in the garage. I'm undecided on storing them (moderate success) or dehydrating. The peas are finished and I should pull them soon. I'm hoping I end up with some seed to save. Green beans are producing but beans aren't very nice due to drought. Thankfully I still have somewhere around 90 pints till in the basement. I go with the premise if God provides store it up which is why I can get through another year or two with beans and tomato products from prior years. My potatoes should be ready to dig this week. I would have started already except for the heat. Old ladies should not be digging in the garden in 100º temps!! I also cut up some potatoes for eyes to plant which I will do when I dig a row of potatoes.

I believe Golden Harvest is produced by the same company that makes Ball and Kerr. At least they were at some point. I tried some of the made in China lids and they didn't seal worth a darn.

When I shopped this week, I basically purchased what was on my list as I was in a time crunch. I did find myself throwing an extra of several of the items in for my preps. My list is usually to replace what I've used as I've established my pantry over the last 25 years so currently it's a matter of rotation and replacing. However, with the current economy and uncertainty, I find myself adding an extra one or two every time I shop.

I like the Aldi brand of spaghetti sauce better than the name brands. Not the higher priced, the $1.69 kind. My favorite is mushroom which they've been out of so, when I saw some this week, I bought two even though it was not on my list.

DH and daughter took the boys too birthday party for one of the grands I took the day off haha. I did a lot of cleaning in the house. I also try to recipe for sopopilias. Can't spell it. It's basically small fry bread that puffs. Rolled it in powdered sugar.
We had another rain last night and nice good heavy rain this morning so everything is doing good we don't have to water nothing thank the Lord.

Apples are coming in at our place along with figs and hopefully the last of the peaches. Canner and dehydrator going all day every day! Ga candy roasters are just about ready to pick and they are everything I was promised! Peas and butterbeans should be ready to pick in another week or so. Lots of work but so rewarding!
We too have had lots of rain with hot temps. But no hail!

Despite thunderstorm warnings we did not get any rain.

I dug a few hills of potatoes and while they are nice, they are very small. The ground is so hard that it comes up in solid blocks which makes the process less than fun. I love new potatoes and they are on the menu for tomorrow.

I also planted a row of potatoes with eyes I cut from grocery store potatoes. I did not water them but will try to do so tomorrow. I did water the beets, radishes and carrots. The lettuce should be up and is not, so I assume seed did not germinate. Beets are up good as are the radishes. Carrots not so much.

A prep that I added last week was a stainless-steel skillet. I had a $13 cash reward plus $20 and was hoping I could find a skillet with lid at Target. Well, serendipity, I found a Revere ware skillet at a thrift shop on sale for $1. It was a cruddy mess, but I knew I had a Revere ware lid to fit at home, so I bought it. I spent a bit of time scrubbing and polishing and it turned out really good. I wanted it specifically for when I sauté rice which is called for in many recipes. I've been doing it in a sauce pan which is doable, but not a good substitute. Now I can use the $13 for something else. Also, I learned that $23 was not going to be nearly enough to buy a new skillet with lid!!! All my skillets are cast iron without lids so not practical for rice.
