I've always got stuff to do in the house.Expecting rain and thunderstorms today, tonight, and tomorrow, too. Not much going to get done here.
You are so busy if it were not so early I need a nap just reading it.Good Morning, All! Hope you are all doing well this morning! I'm a little cranky around the edges, but trying to work my way out of it - usually a nap helps, but it's a little early to take one since I just woke up a bit ago so that's not likely to happen for another few hours yet
I woke up to kittens making noise on the other side of the basement door - not sure how those little escape artists got out of the utility room this time, but I conned them into coming to me by opening a packet of tuna, then slid the porch screen open and got them to go outside. Got the coffee going, then cleaned and refilled the hummingbird feeders while my coffee pot did it's thing, so now it's time to sit down and visit here for a bit, then plan the rest of my day and get the week sorted out - it's going to be a busy one. Then again; aren't they all (Just two more weeks until my next vacation... I can make it!!)
I think I'm almost glad that it's supposed to rain almost every day this week as I'm going to be busy with other stuff so I won't have to feel guilty about not getting outside chores done like weeding between the plants in the garden (already too soggy to get in there), and getting mulch put down. I had to trade work shifts around as my co-worker Buddy is going in for a cardiac cath and needed someone to stay with him afterwards/overnight, so I'll be working tonight instead of one my usual shifts. Then I'll work my normal Monday night shift; and have a doctor's appointment right after I get off work Tuesday morning that isn't likely to go well - and not only because I'll likely be tired and cranky. I think one of us is probably going to fire the other one since we butted heads at our last visit; just not sure which one of us will get to it first If he beats me to it, I will probably end up having to see a cardiologist to get my blood pressure meds - bleah. Maybe I can just get Doc to push me off on another MD... I might try to go to Aldi after my doc visit unless I'm too tired... Then Wednesday is Buddy's cath so that day is filled up. Thursday, if Buddy doesn't have any complications and I it's okay to leave, I'll hit Aldi if I didn't get there on Tuesday; then go home and catch some sleep before I go back in to work. I'll go by the Farmer's Market after I get off work on Friday; then hopefully catch up on sleep. Gotta get the kittens in to the vet sometime during the week though; dang - I'd better call tomorrow and get an appointment. Then, starting Saturday I will probably have the boys for the weekend...
I've got peppers turning color in the garden so they will soon need to be picked, chopped or cut into lobes, blanched, and frozen. I need to find time this week to pull the beets, then blanch and freeze the tops and can the bottoms so that the sweet potatoes will have more room in that bed. If I can find an empty spot, I need to plant more beets for fall. I've got a lot of basil, thyme and rosemary I need to dry. The raised bed by the kitchen door needs weeded now that I have the ones by the garden cleaned up; and I need to have Hubby bring me more cardboard home from work so that I can mulch the flower bed where I planted the coneflower seed as soon as I see them coming up...
I think I just wore myself out thinking about all that
Take care all; have a safe and happy week!
What do you use mandarin oranges for? I thought I was grabbing a can of peaches and accidently got the oranges next to them.I managed to drag myself to walmart today. Finally I found a couple of chairs for one or the other porches. Ozark Trail Director's chair with side table for $19, for that price I got two, I wanted two, so now that is taken care of.
Also this walmart had the 16 oz propane canisters, I have the fitting to fill them, 2 or 7.44, I got 4. And I also got the Ozark Trail single burner propane stove for 18.72, they are in the $35 range or higher on amazon and walmart.com. This should be easy to use to boil water or warm something quickly when the power goes out. I do have other options but I've been wanting to add this to my options.
Got a case of walmart brand chicken gravy and another case of mandarin oranges with no sugar added. An extra 6x8 tarp, I have to hide these from DH because he uses and abuses them, ruins them and does not replace them. I like to have something put back for emergencies, he still thinks he can run to walmart and get what he needs, not on everything, but things like tarps.
I got 2 loaves of 88 cents each white bread. I hesitated because I'm sure the quality of the bread is poor, but I reminded myself that most bread is crap any way. Right now DH is into fresh tomato sandwiches on white bread with (gag) miracle whip.
The online walmart app said they were out of stock of the Commuinty Coffee and chickory 23 oz. brick, but they did have some after all, I only wanted one.
I bought some lemon juice concentrate, not really what I wanted but it is shelf stable. I wanted the lemon juice to make Haymakers Punch, trying to stay hydrated and this is a healthy drink. I also bought two of the Bristol 16 oz canned ham. They have been out of DAK for the longest time.
And Fedx delivered two more cases of Simple Truth Lentils from Vitacost. They were 65 cents each because they are closing them out. Very happy I've been able to add more to my pantry. Lentils are my favorite and the simple truth brand doesn't add crap to them.
Dang, I forgot to add bacon ends and pieces to my list and I did not think to look for them. The are the Wright brand. I just looked and they do have them in stock. so I added them to my list for next time.

I eat them and on occasion I put them in a salad or even a stir fry. But mainly I dump a can of them in a bowl and eat them, they are my treat. Yum YumWhat do you use mandarin oranges for? I thought I was grabbing a can of peaches and accidently got the oranges next to them.
I have found the spices get stronger after canning.I am thawing out a big package of chicken breasts. I'm going to can some plain and then I'm going to try to can some of the chicken with the veggies that I put in a chicken pot pie.
I've got powdered cream of anything soup and canned cream in the pantry for the final product, but I was wondering about canning with the spices in the chicken. Is that a bad idea?
I make chicken stew, fully seasoned, and can it up. It's always good. I've reaI'that sage can turn bitter with canning, but ivenever had any problem with using a judicious amount of poultry seasoning.I am thawing out a big package of chicken breasts. I would think vacuum sealed or in a mylar with o2 just like any other flour or you could keep it in your freezer.Do any of you have buckwheat flour stored? How are you storing it? I thought I was done buying stuff, but am rethinking that. Any experience with storage on this? TIA!
Yes, as Judy said, it can be stored in mylar with oxygen absorbers. Or, if you have a grain grinder, you could buy whole buckwheat, and grind as needed.Do any of you have buckwheat flour stored? They make a good chilled fruit salad with canned pineapple, banana, and shredded coconut. Or blend it all together, maybe add some milk or coconut milk, and make Popsicles. What do you use mandarin oranges for? I thought I was grabbing a can of peaches and accidently got the oranges next to them.
The fruit salad sounds delightful. They make a good chilled fruit salad with canned pineapple, banana, and shredded coconut. Or blend it all together, maybe add some milk or coconut milk, and make Popsicles.
Not really. They seem to get stronger, but I have never had one go bad. Though I do try and avoid canning meat with spices. It allows for greater variability in use.Thank you for that 20Gauge I can always add the spices later, you saved a whole batch of chicken from probably being ruined.
Great idea!Canned up some chicken and pork. Got it relatively cheap from Costco. I get the tasty $5 rotisserie chickens, strip the meat from the bones, can it and make broth from the bones. I usually freeze the broth until I need it or plan on canning more chicken.
This is the first year we've had a lousy tomato crop. Usually we are giving them away, but not this year. I've had to get some from a friend. And the ones we have gotten are small. I doubt there will be any to dehydrate either.Thunderstorms rolled through our area again, yesterday. Lost my internet satellite feed off and on all afternoon from rain fade. Thought we were going to lose power at one point, while I was cooking supper, but it stayed on. More storms in the forecast for this afternoon. Yard needs mowing again already, too. Cary may get rained out, so he may have to wait, until Monday to get it done. By then, it'll be bad. Too many snakes around here to let it get too high. Thankfully, we have cats that are avid hunters.
I did get my last load of laundry done, and hung to dry, yesterday, before the rain hit. Cary also managed to bring another trailer full of firewood home from DS's house, yesterday. This load will need to be split, before stacking.
I'll be doing some house cleaning, today, getting ready for our home fellowship/Bible study crowd, tomorrow. I might make a cake. Red Velvet. I don't like to bake in rainy weather, though. We'll see.
Our tomatoes are doing great with all this heat, humidity, and rain! Looks like I'm going to be canning tomatoes before long. The plants are absolutely loaded. They should be turning soon.
