Good Morning, All! Hope everyone is doing well today...

We are under a flash flood watch - having some torrential rain at the moment, which means I won't be going out to pick tomatoes and peppers before mid afternoon, looking at the forecast. I did get another batch of elderberries in the steam juicer before the rains hit, at least!

Spent part of the morning so far sorting school supplies for the kids I buy for, doing laundry, dishes, and general house work. I'm keeping to quiet chores as Hubby is catching an after work nap. Once the batch of elderberries are done, I'm going to pick some grapes to run through the juicer - the vines are growing on cattle panel fencing that is attached to our west porch posts, so the grapes are harvestable from under the porch roof; won't have to wait for the rain to stop.

I need to clean out the fridge, then cut up the watermelons and canteloupe I bought yesterday, along with some more peaches. Supper is going to be a pork roast I put in the crock pot this morning; I tossed in some small fresh potatoes with it so will make some gravy and open a jar of home canned carrots and glaze them to go with it. After supper, I'll mix up a small batch of bbq sauce and shred enough of the roast and top it with the sauce for my work lunches on Monday and Tuesday - sides will probably just be french bread, fruit and cottage cheese.

A few weeks ago, I gave Hubby some cash and asked him to upgrade our emergency lighting with a focus on good flashlights - he brought in a couple from the truck this morning that seem pretty nice; I'll have to wait until dark to see how far out the light goes.

Co-worker Buddy is coming out late this morning - weather permitting - to bring my Sunday papers; I'll send two tubs of school supplies back to town with him to drop off with another co-worker. Then later this afternoon/early evening I will run older grandson's school supplies over to daughter's house and drop them off - it's so hard to believe that school starts on Tuesday!

I'm still feeling mentally worn out, so I'm likely to just rest, read, and reflect during the mid-afternoon hours - the weather seems conducive for those activities today :)

Take care, all; have a blessed Sunday!

We are finally getting break in weather -mid to upper 80 s. Such a relief I can get outside and weed and trim plants. Getting a small crop of figs and squash and cantalope. Waiting on tomatoes and peppers. Went to walmart saturday and they didn t have any avocados. I don t think I've ever seen that before. Would like to find some black eyed peas.

OK - worked the weekend, and on Sunday, DH and DD headed to Denver. Earlier this year, we had bought some things (lanterns, honeyville stuff, grain mill, sun oven) from these folks that are majorly downsizing. Well, now they are ready to head out on their next adventure and wanted to get rid of a bunch more. They had tried to sell it without success.

DH shows up and the woman said "Oh, thank goodness you're here!!" They proceed to load up a push mower, a spreader, chemicals (detergent, windex, motor oil, herbicide, paint, etc), some plant stands, and 46 (!!) buckets of rice, beans, wheat, flour, sugar, veggies. All sealed and in mylar! And they wouldn't let DH pay a penny for them - they were just happy they didn't have to haul them to the dump.

Today we've worked on the waterline (all day), and I"m beat. I have a bunch of sweet corn that we will probably end up chopping into silage. I"ve tried to get people to come out and pick some, but only a few have come by. They will be more than happy to take it if I pick it for them - but honestly! You'd think people would be thrilled to get free food just for the picking, but I guess not.

don't know what your benefactor's "next adventure" is intended to be - but I think they'll be wishing they had that 46 buckets of food - and that wishing could come very shortly .... wish em' luck

Yesterday was more work on the waterline, canning up some ham and beans, and picking some out of the garden. DD picked apples this morning, then DH and I took them to the cows while she was doing school. I tried a new recipe for grated sauteed beets that turned out pretty well.

Not buying anything this week as the sales so far have been terrible. I'll have to check the grocery ads and see if anything is worth it as Friday is payday.

I did manage to save a stack of money today. The credit card I use to autopay some bills is raising it's rates, so I decided to change it to another card (I was annoyed). I never really paid attention to the fact that I was paying $22 a month for my AOL account, not counting what I paid for my internet on the phone bill. WHen I went to transfer it to the other card, I looked at the plan and wondered why I ever had that one, and switched it to the one for $6.99 a month instead. Fifteen dollars a month adds up over time.

Boy, do I wish you lived nearer to US!!

We get $3.75 a pound (hanging weight) for our pasture fed, "organic in everything but official certification" Dexter beef. It probably ends up being $5 a pound when all the bones, etc are trimmed... but that includes stuff like the tenderloin, ribeye steaks, NY strip steaks, sirloin, round steaks and lots of fantastic hamburger.

For pasture raised chicken, we get $2.25 a pound. That's for the whole bird, but I cut them up, individually quick freeze the pieces, and then package everything in heavy ziplock bags. It's the minimum that we can charge and get any profit at all, but I was feeling guilty- until one of hubby's coworkers told him they were paying ELEVEN BUCKS a pound for "organic, free range chicken". Holy COW!!!

I will admit, I cringe when I see chicken (especially) or other meats at rock bottom prices... I know what it costs to produce them, and "99 cent chicken" (or worse) is BELOW the break-even point of production, if they are being fed reasonably decent quality feed. I'm absolutely NOT knocking anyone who can only afford the "bargain" meats, but it still makes me cringe. And I can't say I'd do anything different if we didn't have access to our homegrown stuff- quite honestly, I NEED to have quality meat (and other animal protein) to be healthy and feel well. A mostly vegetarian diet tends to be much higher in carbs than my metabolism can handle.

My daughter just told me what she's paying a year for groceries (not counting the beef, chicken, eggs and -mostly free- veggies and fruit they get from us) and it's over $1000 per month. For a family of four, two of whom are 5 and 6. HOLY CRAP!!!

Granted, they eat very well (and almost none of this is 'processed" crap, except for all the damned treats those little boys get... silly yogurt in "straws", etc (I'll bet that unit cost was insane!!) and they do cook almost everything at home. And they essentially pay through the nose to get the equivalent (high-fructose free relish and catsup, for example) of stuff we always have produced and canned at home.

But I know she's fairly frugal (especially given that she doesn't have any *real* need to be... they're solidly middle class, although with the tax burden that entails) and the fact that she's spending more in a month than I do in a year is unreal!!

I can't imagine how people do it who *don't* know how to cook!

What a blessing you received, Moldy!! I wish your benefactors a safe journey on their new adventure! And yes, it's a shame that folks will turn down free sweet corn for the picking, but it's an issue that I've run in to before with not only sweet corn and other garden produce, but other items as well.

It's been a busy week at home - worked Monday & Tuesday; took the indoor cat to the vet for a very expensive UTI, then picked up my friend's brother to come out to the farm and do some work Wednesday, and somehow a certain short person came along for the ride :) I kept said short person busy with the hose 'washing' bikes and trikes and coolers and anything else he wanted to wash - including the insides of his boots, while he was wearing them; that kid just cracks me up!! In the meantime, I cleaned the porch, cleaned house, caught up on laundry, managed to fill the small trailer with weeds x 3 for the brother to dump, and did various other chores. The brother worked on getting the side boards/tailgate cut for my trailer, then did a lot of chainsaw and weed whacker work when he wasn't dumping my trailer. I snagged a quick shower in the mid afternoon, changed the short person into dry clothes, then headed to town to drop off the friend's brother and pick up the other two grandkids. The grandson's visited with co-worker Buddy (he swears I throw the two boys in the door, shove a pizza in after them, and RUN!!) where they had a great time watching cartoons, wearing out his cat by throwing toys for it to chase, and eating pizza. It took him a whole hour to send me a text that said "You do this ALL DAY?!?!"

As Prudentwatcher said, it's not been a great week for stock up sales; I think I've used one, maybe two coupons in the past two weeks! But I did take the granddaughter to the (very small) local mall where they were having a ton of 30 to 70% off sales to see if she could find something for school; she didn't find anything, but I got a couple more shirts for work at 30% off - plus another 5% for a Senior Discount that I noted on the ticket when I got home  I also picked up two nice nightgowns at Penney's for 66% off - I would have been happy to pay the $15 as a regular price but don't see what made these gowns worth $45 to begin with; which I guess might be why they were clearanced. I might stop by and pick up a couple more on my way home from work tonight so that I can turn my current ones into cleaning rags (won't take much, they are 3/4 of the way there already lol!) - I received 10% off coupons by completing surveys for each of the receipts, so they will be over 3/4 off the usual price.

I'd called my doctor's office during the day to ask for a 'script and found out that I'd have to have labs drawn the next day to get it, so was up bright and early and headed for town on Friday. Had fasting labs drawn, and then headed to Home Depot to pick up the paint and a bit of hardware for the trailer, and was thinking about grabbing some breakfast when the phone rang - blood had clotted in the tubes; needed a re-draw, so back to the doctor's office, but at least they did give me my 'script without a further wait. This is one that I rarely use but would need more often in a SHTF, so I faithfully pick it up each month - at $5/script, it is worth it to have it on hand. I popped into Aldi while I waited for the script to be filled and picked up some lunchbox foods for the grandkids - string cheese, cheese to be cut into cubes, hummus, applesauce cups, and fresh fruit - which I dropped off when I went to pick up my helper again. He got the boards painted for the trailer in between bouts of mowing, chainsawing, and emptying my little trailer that I kept filling with weeds, weeds, and more weeds!! I escaped into the house around 4:30 to grab a shower while he finished up, then ran him home. Back home, I took some ibuprofen, ate leftovers, and was in bed by 7pm - think I was probably asleep by 8!

Today is an overtime shift - just 8 hours, thank goodness! Back to work my regular shifts on Saturday and Sunday; I will likely stop at Dollar General Saturday evening on my way home from work; I have another $5/$25 purchase coupon and if they still have a good supply of canning jars lids (made in USA), I will pick up 14 boxes plus another pack of index cards that granddaughter needs for school. 14 x $1.75 = $24.50 - $5 = $19.50/168 lids = 11.6 cents/lid; best price I've found in a while.

If I have any energy left after that, I will stop in at my class reunion on my way home - if it's still going on  We're all getting older and just don't party like we used to (although, now that I think of it, we never did  )

Take care all; wishing you all a safe and happy end to the week - stay safe out there!

Working today, then off the weekend. DH will take the prius to the dealership today for maintenance before he goes to work. We also need to pick up some hay this weekend, so my canning may get put off. I really really really need to strip the garden and get it canned, but it always seems like there's something else that takes priority. Still need to get the buckets put away, too.

Our friend with the orchard called - 35 mph winds last night and a bunch of apples on the ground. DD and i picked up 4+ big trash cans. Some of them were delivered to oour 'girls' in the pasture. While we were there, I checked water and DD fixed fence. Now back home and ready to work on stripping the garden.
