Praying that everyone has a very blessed week ahead! :)

Me too! I need to do some serious thinking in regards to preps for this week.
I’m starting back to work after spring break and need to decide/pray on where to focus my efforts.

One thing I plan on doing is meal planning. That will help me with grocery expenses as well as eating healthier.

Slow and steady ....

No real prepping planned for this week. I'm going to Sam's, Tuesday, for several items that are getting low in my pantry, and that's about it. I'm just working on maintaining what I already have. My regular grocery shopping won't be for another two weeks.

Thank you! I've been outside chasing a wet, muddy dog who thought doing zoomies in the neighbor's freshly tilled field was the greatest thing ever - until I caught him and dragged him through the house to the tub to hose him down. I should have just left the goofus outside and started filling the kiddie pool I use for plants with warmed up water for his bath instead. Lesson learned. In my defense, I was only half way down my first cup of coffee...

I got the muddy mess from the dog cleaned up, and then, since I was already soggy, I spent some time dragging overwintered plants out of the basement stairwell and setting them out on the sidewalk to enjoy a gentle rain shower. I got tired of listening to the sparrows squabbling over the hummingbird feeder so set out on a search for my wire cutters (oh yeah, you put them in the car when you went to the cemetery to put out the flowers - duh), and then lopped the perches right off of that sucker - take that, you jerk sparrows!!

I'm going to go find some dry clothes, then refill my coffee cup and hope the caffeine jolt wakes me up enough to plan the rest of my day...

Have a great day, All!!

Hearing others woes...chasing a muddy dog...makes me realize how my troubles are small! I am putting out flowers. I know that there is trouble all around us but it is my place of refuge and I realize it is necessary! We are planting melons and more beans this week. Corn for grinding and for animal feed goes in this week also after it dries out a bit. We are trying Hastings corn this year. And Bradford watermelons will be a new venture for us. Recalculating number of jars and lids and what I think I will need. Straightening freezers to make sure nothing has gotten away from us. Can't decide how much to put in freezers this year but will probably greatly reduce what I freeze and maybe limit to fruit and some meat? Love to hear your thoughts on that.

Just doing bunch of breads this morning. Everyone loves the fluffy bread recipe I got off yt and my bestest friend and her son are here from Texas. They are spending the night. Everything is ready so I'm making several loaves, rolls, and cinnamon rolls this morning.
Very easy recipe with only a few minutes knead time. 2 short rise times, comes out perfect every time.
Boys and us planted more white and red taters. Nothing is up yet but been warm rain so I'm hoping over the next week.
Oh yes we put in 2 rows green beans too.
Once in awhile we have early spring like this. Farmers putting in corn yesterday.
I think this will be a good garden year so gonna make it count.
Only thing is I can't find any dwarf fruit trees for sale, yet.
Hope you all have a good day!

Was up early and on the other side of town yesterday, so I stopped in Target to get some cat food. I found 2 bags of the dry food we use and got those, but the canned food side was scary. There were 9 shelves about 12 ft long each. If you put the actual canned cat food on the shelves the way it should be shelved, it wouldn't even fill up half of ONE shelf, much less nine. With five cats, that kind of stuff is worrisome. We do stock months ahead, but we do go through it. We saw a friend later that afternoon and she said her regular monthly Chewy's order was shorted a big bag of cat food (1 instead of 2) and also kitty litter.

Then I popped over to Bass Pro as I had some gift cards. Five freeze dried meals for two made it home with me. I have some more gift cards coming, so hopefully more will come home with me again.

Today I vac sealed some rice and some tea bags, as well as two roasts I bought on sale at Winn Dixie on Friday. Both freezers are pretty well stuffed, so I took out some chicken breasts to make some chicken salsa in the crockpot for lunches this week.

It's beautiful outside today and tomorrow but the rest of the week is forecast to be cool/cold with precipitation, so I'm working on outdoor chores. Today I cleaned the gutters. The house is surrounded by huge old evergreens and aspens and the gutters were full to overflowing with needles, cones, leaves and sticks. Fortunately it's a one story house and I only need the kitchen step stool to do the job. A friend was planning to do the gutters for me but it's actually something I enjoy doing so I jumped on it before he could. ;-)

Tomorrow I hope to cut/split some firewood that I left scattered in the yard last fall. Tidy up is good.

The neighbor lady called shortly after lunch and asked me to go to town with her to mall walk; she didn't want to be at home as she's been having an uninvited guest show up on Sundays. I didn't have anything important going on, so off we went. We had a pretty good time; did some mall walking and some shopping as well - the local JC Penney store is closing down and I was able to pick up 4 pair of swim trunks and 6 pair of shorts in various sizes for the grandsons, plus a robe for myself for under $70. She wanted to go to Marshall's; I got lucky there and found a purse that would work for concealed carry - the strap broke on my other one so I'd been making do with one that didn't work as well as I'd like. After the mall, we hit Wal-Mart to pick up my scripts, look for exercise britches, and look at the plants; then we hit Home Depot to look at more plants. We stopped at Wendy's for lemonades, and Sonic for soft pretzels, then wandered down some back roads to see how much farming had gotten done last week as we were on our way back home. It was a very nice, relaxing way to spend a rainy afternoon.

We went to a friend's house last night for a fish dinner. I'd rather have my friend's fish dinner than any restaurant around here. Although the Super One nearest me has great fried fish, so tender. Another couple showed up and we all had a nice visit. Both couples are boycotting coke.

We were going to church this morning but the water was off and I couldn't get ready without it. It came on later but was on and off all afternoon.

Beautiful day, didn't get much done though. All ya'll's outdoor activities make me tired.

Very busy week with work, teaching, and other stuff. We just got back from a weekend visit with my mom, sister, and kiddos. It was really nice - did some yardwork for mom, helped DD with plumbing (well, DH did), got to visit with everyone (almost). Yes, it's a long drive, but truthfully, it's the first time I"ve been able to sit and talk with DH for what feels like forever. Lots of good conversation can go a long way to balancing me out and making sure my feet are on the ground.

A part of my morning routine is to plan ahead for "What's for supper, tonight". I decided to make a Hamburger Helper type one dish meal. I'll make veggies to go with it, too. So, I walked into my pantry room to get out all the ingredients to make the dish. I needed one can of tomato soup as one ingredient. Started going through my cases, and low and behold, I found 6 cans that were bad. Pop tops, of course, and only a year old. I had just bought a new case a few months ago, so I was able to salvage my plans for supper, tonight! Guess I need to restock more tomato soup. I think I'll only keep about 6 months of it in storage from now on. Those tomato and pop top lid products just don't store well.

We are waiting for the temp outside to warm up a bit more, before heading out to set out my azalea bushes! Yay! Finally getting to work outdoors, again. It's supposed to be a warm sunny day with temp of 84*, today.

Staying at Mom's with my uncle, yesterday, went really well, while Mom and my aunt went to their brother's funeral services. We had a blast with him. He's always been a funny guy who is a joy to be around, unlike the rest of Mom's family. There were around 2000 people at Mom's brother's funeral services!!!! I hate crowds! Mom and my aunt made it very well.

Received the Wife's new juicer. Expensive #@$%@$% but it is what she wanted and she never ever complains when I buy guns, ammo or silver so she gets what she wants for her birthday.

We have had a history of letting our trees live or die on their own. The results have been mixed. This year we decided to fertilize them with a proper mix instead of just a handful of 10-10-10 once a year.

The results are astounding. I now realize what the people felt once commercial fertilizer came on to the market. WOW.

Trees are greener than they have ever been. Have more leaves and flowers than ever before. Basically they are growing how I thought they should have to begin with.

Granted there is an exception or three, but those trees have always sucked badly and now they still do.

Lastly the gardens which we took a month to bring into balance with the NPK and ph, are all doing very well. In fact, we have a pepper plant that is now 9 years old. It has some leaves at the base, (we cut them back every year). Not sure how it will do, but it may be its last year as the 2 year old pepper plant has much more growth.

So far so good.

As usual, it's going to be a busy week.

At 6,400 ft, we're just at the beginnings of garden season. Naturally, we have three days of snow in the forecast starting tomorrow. But today is beautiful; we're just waiting for it to warm up a bit before heading out. I'm hoping to put a few cabbage, broccoli, and lettuce plants and seeds in (with protection for the plants), but not sure how much time I will have for that. THe main project for today is putting in a fire pit using re-purposed bricks from the yard. Fortunately, this house came with a fenced garden area, but the landscaping is extremely blah. DD1 is a crop and soil science major and just finished an edible landscaping course. She's got all kinds of plans for us. :) THe bricks that were used to edge the lawn and make circles around the trees are becoming the fire pit.

She's leaving some meandering grass paths in the back, but most of the grass is coming out for vegetables, berry bushes, medicinal shrubs, and flowers. DH is having a heart attack (think Fred Sanford), but that was part of the deal of me accepting his desire to buy this house--the backyard had to become a vegetable garden. DD's goal is to make it so gorgeous that DH will want her to landscape the (very blah) front as well.

Unfortunately, I can't work outside all day today. DDIL has another ultrasound scheduled for this afternoon. She and the baby keep measuring small, about 30th percentile. It's the second time this same doctor has ordered an ultrasound for this reason. I keep reassuring DDIL that not everyone can be above average. DDIL's other doctors (she goes to a group and doesn't get to see the same doctor for each visit, unfortunately) aren't concerned, so that's good. The baby is due in just over 2 weeks. She's our first grandchild, so we're pretty excited.

Then there's the usual activity of keeping the freeze dryer well-fed. Oh, I've got to figure out tonight's dinner as well. DD wants to hit Home Depot after DDIL's appt, which will put us getting home pretty late. Hmmm... I've got some pulled pork in the freezer; maybe I can get DS to make some buns. Add some salad, I think we'll be good.

Went to my plant lady awhile ago for tomato plants. God one eggplant, and three pots of flowers. I did get a bunch of tomatoes. And for some reason DH thinks I need to come help him plant them. Oh and he paid for them too. So out I drug myself, I was out about maybe 20 minutes and I was about to fall over. Started coughing (I have a chronic cough particularly when I'm around plants. I think most of the tomato plants are in the ground and watered, but I had to get back in the house or I would be on my face in the dirt. I'm just not an outside person, too many allergies.

The plant lady also sells produce, I put in an order for yellow squash, zucchini and a few eggplant. We've tried to grow them here but they just don't make it.

I also to a farmer and picked bok choi. It's not the kind I've bought in the store, but I'm sure it will be good.

Cary and I have worked all afternoon getting these azaleas in the ground. Only have two of them done! I told Cary to just leave the rest for another day. So frustrating when the unexpected happens!

It was supposed to be an easy job, but NO. Cary was to dig the old dead shrubs up, and I was going to use the same holes to set the azaleas in. We forgot, until Cary starting digging the first shrub up, that he had laid down ground wire around the shrubs when we planted them years ago. We had several Boxers at the time, and they wanted to dig up the shrubs, thus the wire. We spent most of the afternoon hooking the old buried wire to the lawn tractor trying to pull it out and off the ground, along with the shrubs. That's why only two azaleas are now in the ground, instead of all 5.

No rain, and nice temps all week, so we can get back to them, Wednesday. Tomorrow, Cary goes to see his Internist, and a trip to Sam's.

Hit Safeway for sale items, a deposit to the bank, and a check to the conservation service for some trees that will come in in a couple weeks. Their March sale had hardy apricot, American plum, wild rose, and golden currant leftovers for $35 for a bundle of 25 bareroot trees. Yes, please!! I think I have figured out where I want to plant most of them.

Work tomorrow, then teaching in Denver on Wednesday - I plan to hit the sales at King Soopers. Thursday and Friday work - but will have time to hit the local grocery store sales. Busy week, with lots of little things tucked in here and there (like cleaning, laundry, putting potatoes in the freezedryer, etc....)

Hubby picked up the stump grinder at the rental place last Friday. We rented it for 8 hours of use. But by getting it for the weekend when they are closed, hubby could spread that 8 hours over 3 days. He did the 3 stumps in front of the house late Friday afternoon and evening. Then some on Saturday and Sunday. We turned it in with only 7 hours on it, but we even did 3 extra stumps.

Yesterday I went to the big Spring children's consignment sale. I got clothes and sandals for the grandson that needed them. I also got both boys some books. The younger grandson's mom said he had plenty right now. He also gets the good hand-me-downs from the older grandson.

We are expecting temperatures back in the mid 30s for night time lows. I hope it stays just a little warmer. My potatoes have already been frost bit once and the fruit trees have little fruit on some. Part of the trees are still in bloom stage and can stand a little more cold.

My hubbys friend put on face book a message that said " stock up on corn seed, bean seed, and opossums seasoning. Folks, it is going to get rough. I wonder how many are thinking the same thing.

I checked what is starting to come up in the woods. I have not found any morrels yet. Been looking for a couple years and have only found one. I left it. My ginseng is starting to come up. This is the 3rd year for some of it. It is a long way from harvest.

Picked up 3 more IBC totes for rainwater and for sap. Nice thing is the fellow that had them put 16" tank covers in them so they are easy to clean. I am going to add them to the 2 totes I already have. It gives me a total of 1400 gals of water storage if I need it. Picked up the fence posts for the dog fence so that project can get underway. Going to try to get some oats in the ground this weekend. Another grain experiment for me.

We just got home from our day in the big city. Cary's doctor appointment went well, His Internist didn't think there is anything much to worry about from the lung nodule and COPD. The calcium buildup in his coronary artery isn't much of anything, either. He has an appointment to see a Pulmonologist, tomorrow, just to see what exactly is going on. No appointment, yet, to see his Cardiologist. This doctor visit made us feel a bit calmer over all.

We went on to Sam's. I got several items that I really didn't want to order from them online. I was afraid some of it might get damaged during shipping, so in store was a better option. I didn't see any empty shelves or shortages at all. If there were limits on any item, it wasn't anything I bought or noticed.

I also had to go by my eye doctor's office, because I still couldn't see out of my new glasses. Everything was still distorted. The technician checked them, and told me that the lenses were in backwards and upside down!!!!! Can you believe that?!! No wonder I couldn't see out of the darn things! They fixed them for me with no charge. Now, I can see. I will never go back to Sam's for eyewear no matter how much of a discount I get! Besides, the technician told me to never go back there. They didn't do good work at all, according to a lot of their patients. I believe her.

Overall, it was a good day, and we are still blessed! :)

Ran to the dollar tree after work today. Great place to add a few preps.
Got aluminum foil, Colgate toothbrushes (3 in the pack), crest pro health toothpaste (3 packs), two mouthwashes, a dog leash, and a couple dog toys.
I’m just trying to make a point to routinely pick up things we use regularly. Grocery prices are soaring. I’m sure everything will.

Slow and steady we continue.

It looks like my fig trees were really hurt by the cold. My oldest fig has leaves coming out near the ground and on one shoot. I am not sure of the variety. It came from a start off my parents fig. It produces figs all season till frost, and they are large fruits. My brown Turkey fig is showing no life at all so far. I think we got to -7 during the winter storm.

Oh no Digger! My figs took a hit but are snapping back! But we just got to the high 20's. We took inventory yesterday to see how the orchard and vineyard did. So far no big losses. Just a few Raspberries and maybe some plums but the trees look ok.

On a different note, we went to the nearest civilized area on Monday to celebrate an anniversary. Found that store bought bacon is now over $4 a pound. Last time we bought, bacon was $3 per pound. Local bacon is difficult to find and we only make it a few times a year. We are reviewing that and may have to change our approach to that!

The freeze dryer has a leak somewhere, so no freeze-drying until DH figures it out. :(

The chance of rain forecasted by the day shift weather forecaster (who has a better record) has developed into at least 2-3" of snow (the night shift guy predicted 2-4"). This is the middle of April. We have only 3 winters here, not 4. Someone didn't get the memo, apparently.

Of course, this is all my fault because yesterday I put two of the snow sleds away for the season. Who knows what would have happened had I put all four away.

We got a great report from Cary's Pulmonologist, today! The nodule on his lung was nothing. It's this size...."o", and the doctor says he'll watch it for awhile, and if nothing changes, it's nothing. He doesn't expect it to become anything. Also, concerning the COPD, that's nothing, either. Doctor said that with aging, everyone's lungs show some degradation, and what he sees in Cary's lungs is insignificant.

I didn't get to go anywhere else, besides the doctor's office. Our weather forecast changed, and we've been getting rain and thunderboomers all day. I didn't want to be out in the weather going from one store to another. I had planned to do some "sale" shopping.

Oh, one more thing. The Pulmonologist tried his best to talk Cary and I into getting the C-vaccine, today. He almost got "pushy" with it. Cary finally told him, "No, for the last time, No". Doctor told us that as of today, there had been 600 C-19 deaths at our hospital, since the outbreak started. We're still not persuaded.

Sherree that's wonderful about Cary's appointment results. And also wonderful that he resisted the jab.

We had some heavy rain over night and this morning. And more expected late tonight.

We are finally going to church tonight, as we haven't been in months. Actually not sure if DH is going, he didn't sleep well last night. One of our goats had twins yesterday afternoon and the little girl doesn't seem to be getting enough milk, her brother is a pig. He is giving her a bottle and she takes a little bit. We are not sure if its the right milk, its 2% shelf stable from a box. Maybe someone reading this can make a suggestion.

The reason I'm so determined to go tonight is because we have isolated ourselves for so long that I think its to the point of unhealthy. So its two hours away from time to leave and I'm already dressed and ready to go. This is the second time in months that I've actually put on a little makeup.

Two of the blouses that I recently ordered from Ebay are a bit too tight. So I hung them in the closet with some of the other next size down that are waiting for me to drop a few.

I've done intermittent fasting off and on for several years, mostly off, but it's late afternoon and I've only had water and coffee and I'm not hungry. They serve food on Wednesday nights, started back last week for the first time in a year. So here's hoping and praying I can stick to it this time, again.

Yes. It was great news to us! It's like a burden was lifted. We were so afraid that the doctor was going to tell us that Cary had lung cancer and Emphysema. Turned out to be nothing at all. Some doctors will tell you just enough to scare you to death, and when it comes under scrutiny, it turns out to be nothing.

To tell you the truth, with all of Cary's hospital stays and doctors appointments, it has gotten us out of our comfort zone, for sure. We tend to like being sorta isolated, and only venture out when we want to, not because we have to. I hope we can get our lives back to more normal now. Cary doesn't have any more CT Scans, until October.

I'm still hopeful that I can get the rest of my azaleas set out tomorrow. This rain, today, makes it questionable, though. I still have garden veggies to get out, too. We need more 80+ daytime temps, so the soil can warm up enough to do that. We almost had to start a fire in the wood heater this morning! I think we made it up to 60*, today.

Great news about your DH Sherree!

It’s been hectic all week here and I’m worn out. My dentist filled a tooth earlier in the week and I’m glad that’s done, one more thing I get to check off my health type preps. I’ll go back this fall for usual cleaning/checkup.

DH and I drove over to Franklin TN yesterday (2 hr drive one way, ugh) and did some shopping at Costco. I’ve re-supplied on some vitamins and otc meds. Since I’m needing to make some changes in my diet we bought some keto type things to try and 4 different kinds of wild caught frozen fish. We typically just buy salmon but I decided I need to branch out so I’ll be trying some new recipes once I find some I want to make.

Besides some regular groceries we got a huge bottle of dish soap and a big box of oxi clean that was on special. We go through a ton of nuts and cheeses at our house so mixed nuts, peanuts, cashews and almonds along with several cheeses made it in the cart. Also bought salt, corned beef hash, popcorn, canned pineapple, tuna fish, etc. I honestly don’t remember what all we got. We left there and hubby wanted to go to Sam’s so he did that while I stayed in the car LOL. I absolutely could not hold up to go in there. We managed to get everything in the house and cold/frozen things put away but there are still items waiting on me. It always takes me a few days to get over these excursions, so I’m having to take it easy today, thankfully little granddaughter went down for an early nap.

That particular Costco store is usually busy but I have never seen it that crowded before and it never let up from the time we got there and then finally got out. I hate being in crowds and it was really bad.

Your Costco run sounds like my recent Sam's run. I bought a huge amount of different things, not just food. I can't remember everything I bought, but it took Cary and I several trips to bring it all in the house. I thought I was never going to find place for it all, but I managed. Our bedroom is looking more and more like my pantry room, but Cary doesn't mind.

Sam's seems to always be crowded these days, and since I hate crowds, we've decided to limit our "in store" shopping there to maybe ever couple of months. Most things I can buy from them online with free shipping.

As we age, we're realizing that our "all day" shopping trips are getting harder, and takes much more out of us than when we were younger. We've been doing them ever since we were married. We call them our "Date Days", and most times we would take in a movie and a nice dinner out, before finishing up our day. We still enjoy doing what we can. No movies in years, though.

Judy... I would definitely at least feed the kid whole milk. Since you are just supplementing her, it should be fine (but they need the fat calories... even whole milk from the store is only 3.25% butterfat!

Sherree... great news, and truly it was what I expected to hear. I swear, the ability to find the tiniest anomaly has outpaced our common sense. I'm so glad you guys can take a big breath of relief and get on with your lives.
