Karns City High School is the school just up the road from me.

Please pray for this kid and his familyif you have a mind to.

This family had a plate full before this happened.
The mom has stage 4 breast cancer,

The family of the Pennsylvania high school football player who collapsed on the field during Friday night’s game has updated his status and has asked for continued prayers, according to a post on the Karns City football team’s social media account.

Mason Martin, a senior quarterback for the team, collapsed during the third quarter of Friday’s game against Redbank Valley and was flown to Pittsburgh’s UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. The family told Pittsburgh’s CBS News station KDKA Saturday that he suffered a “significant brain bleed as well as a collapsed lung.”

A Twitter/X post shared from Stacy King Martin by team’s account Sunday said Mason Martin “remains in critical condition with little change over the last 36 hours.”

“The truth is we need a miracle,” the post read. “I’m not saying that to sound grim, but to let you know that we need the strength of your prayers. No one believes in this kid more than us, but he needs everyone’s strength and prayers.”

The post said that they are waiting “for the swelling to go down to assess the extent of damage to (the) brain.”

“So please pray the way he has always played the game, all out holding nothing back, maybe a little angry, definitely aggressive,” it read. “We will keep you all updated if anything changes.”

Karns City superintendent Eric Ritzert announced Saturday that a prayer vigil will be held Sunday at 7 p.m. at Diehl Stadium.

“All are welcome to gather with us in prayer,” Ritzert wrote. “We will also have counselors available during the community prayer vigil for those in need of support.”

Martin scored his team’s only touchdown in Friday’s game against Redbank Valley, which was stopped with 7:53 to go in the third after he collapsed on the field.

According to D9Sports.com, Martin had just played a defensive series and went out on the field as part of the kick return team when the head official, identified as Mike Vasbinder, said he saw the player “wobble and sway.”

The report said that Vasbinder said he asked Martin if he was OK, and the player responded, “No,” before he fell to the turf.

Vasbinder told the site that Martin was everyone’s “number one priority here.”
“Nothing else matters,” he said.

“I was just amazed by the way they all handled it,” he added. “Thank the Lord they got him out of here and to the hospital as quickly as they did.”

Football programs and players from across Pa. have been sending prayers and well wishes to the Karns City football account for Martin since the incident.
Check out some of those below:
“We are sending all of our (love) to Mason, his family, and the entire Karns City community. #MasonStrong,” Avonworth Athletic posted.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mason and his family as well as the @KC_GremlinFball program and community. We are wishing you a full and speedy recovery Mason!” Connellsville football posted.

Praying.

A bit rare, but it does happen. Here is some dated info from the 1980s. I’m guessing these numbers probably have dropped a little with the development of better football helmets.

“In 1984, Albright7 reported 16 intracranial hematomas in high school football athletes, leading to 6 deaths. The most common cause of head injury death is a subdural hematoma, which results most often from a rupture of the veins in the subdural space, leading to slow venous bleeding between the dura and brain parenchyma. If the parenchyma is ruptured, arterial bleeding may also contribute to this pathologic condition.8,9 Between 1984 and 1988, the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research10 reported 18 incidences of subdural hematomas in athletes at various levels of football.”

Of course, this could be “helped along” by more than just a football hit (my opinion).

Here's a small update.

KARNS CITY, PA (KDKA) - Karns City Area High School quarterback Mason Martin collapsed on the field during Friday night's game and he was flown to UPMC Presbyterian where he is in critical condition.

Martin's family posted an update on social media on Monday morning citing he is demonstrating some purposeful movement in his arms.

Martin suffered a significant brain bleed along with a collapsed lung during the third quarter of Friday's game. His family said he was involved in a hit, or tackle, and continued playing defense without issue.

Minutes later, when he came back on the field for a kickoff return, they saw the 17-year-old senior stumble and then collapse.

The Karns City community continues to rally behind the Martin family as hundreds of people gathered at the football field on Sunday night for a vigil to show their support.

Martin's mother is battling stage 4 breast cancer. Close friends say the Martins never show any weakness and the school superintendent calls them pillars in Karns City.

Counselors will be at the school Tuesday when the students and staff return.

Another update from his local paper.

The tube has been removed from Mason Martin’s chest and his lung has completely recovered after being injured at a football game Friday night, Sept. 1 at Karns City Area School District’s football field.

The medical update was included in a Facebook post from Mason’s mother, Stacy King Martin, on Monday, Sept. 4. She said the high school senior and Karns City quarterback has demonstrated some purposeful movement in his arms, and is also retracting his legs when his toes are pinched.

“This is the first step in an extremely long journey,” she said in the post.

Martin said the prayer vigil held Sunday evening at Karns City football field in support of Mason has motivated the family and overwhelmed them with joy.

Mason, the team’s senior quarterback, collapsed before a play in the third quarter of a home game against Redbank Valley. He was taken from the field by ambulance and then transported by helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. The incident was reported to dispatch at 8:48 p.m.

Joe Sherwin, head coach for Karns City’s football team, said some alumni football players and local clergy quickly came together to organize the prayer vigil Sunday. Word of Mason’s injury and the vigil spread over the weekend, and many businesses’ signs in and around the school district showed messages of support for Mason.
