Getting ready to invest in a water filter for home/emergency use and a purifier for travel.

Any feedback on these two would be most welcome :

1. STERIPEN --UV light - handheld water purifier (for travel).

2. BERKEY LITE (with the black candles) - (for home use).

Whats the verdict on these two birds folks ???

We have used the Big Berkey with white candles since 1999. I recommend it highly.
I have thought of having the black filters for travel/questionable water but have put it off so far.

Recently I cleaned it after it had been left dry for a week and found the buttons that fill the two unused holes loose. They had degraded and were leaking raw water into the lower reservoir. I drilled them and installed stainless steel bolts and nuts (5/16 I think) to compress the buttons, filled it and checked that they did not leak.

The alternative was to install two more filters or buy new plugs... but I can't help trying to fix stuff first.

I am glad I caught it before I ran truly polluted water thru it.
I still recommend it highly. Stuff gets old. Check these carefully if your unit is several years old.

We received our Berkey Lite yesterday, we are trying it out since our water has a strong chlorine taste....ewwww. So far so good! We purchased it off of E-bay at a very reasonable price, it also came with three travel bottles with filters at no extra charge.

We have Berkeys (more than one because we like 'em so much): the standard stainless steel with white candles, a plastic model (bugout kit), and a homemade Berkey Lite with black candles. The thing I suspect about the steripen is that it will purify your water well enough but has no carbon filter to get rid of taste problems so you can have clean water to drink but the water still could taste like crap. Please correct me if I'm wrong on the steripen.

I have read that the Katadyn filters are good for traveling. They last for around 13,000 gallons, even longer with a prefilter, and the filter can be cleaned. I can find out the exact model if interested. I know they were going on flea bay for around $150 last I looked.
