Does anyone have a Black Berkey ? How do you like it ?
I've heard it removes radiation .

After years with a 'Monolithic Dome' filter system that I home built with 2 SS stock pots we bought a Crown Berkey with 4 filters and the filters to remove arsenic and fluoride and... You cannot do better than a Berkey filter system... I suggest you buy a size bigger than you think you need, just 'cause... It will filter your water and you won't have any radiation in the water if you keep it in your fallout shelter...

If your water source has radiation, water filter is probably not gonna fix things for you.

We have had a lot of threads on berkey stuff, I still don't own one because I am lazy about dedicated counter space as well as not feeling like I need to filter all of my water.

I like how they look. I like that they are made to last. Research the filters and youtube the berkey name and all that as well.

I agree that they probably won't filter out the radiation but that said, they do filter out nasties. Got a set of backups a week or so again from the Berkey guy up above. We have the SS British Imperial which has been working for us for about 18 years now on a daily basis. Just need to replace filters periodically and have gotten a couple of new spigots over the years. They have a really nice SS spigot now. Love it. No more plastic...!

Not sure if a Berkey can filter out "radiation" per se, but it can filter down to 1 micron sized pollutants.

There are however filters out there that are designed to deal with various radioactive elements and depending upon the type and intensity of the contamination they are supposed to work:

Water doesn't become radioactive. It's the particles (fallout) in the water that are radioactive. As long as those particles are larger than 1 micron the Berkey will filter them out.

Again it should be pointed out that even if your water filter CAN filter out radioactive particles, you very much do NOT want that then-contaminated filter anywhere near you. The water won't be radioactive, but that filter sure as hell will be! If you're seriously concerned about it, what you need is a pre-filter to get those radioactive particles out of the water BEFORE your water source ever gets into your house (or shelter, if that's what you're trying to do).
