TIP Watch out! Amazon couldn't care less about your privacy on Facebook!!!

There it was this morning on my Facebook feed from Amazon. "Enter to win a new Kindle Fire and $100 Amazon gift card." All you have to do is click on the URL.

So I clicked on the URL, and a box popped up, asking me to grand permission for the Amazon app. I couldn't believe what the app was asking me to grant permission to do. I've clicked on other apps before and it typically just says "this app will receive your basic info." But not this one. Check out what Amazon is asking for:

Not just to access your account when you're offline... not just to post on your behalf... but also to make your posts automatically defaulted to "public" when it does decide to post on your behalf. That, amongst a long list of other things. It's disturbing enough that 1.2 million people already use this app, but so do 7 of my friends. Are people really that nonchalant about their privacy??

And shame on Amazon for sneaking in a way to gain it all, by posting a simple contest to giveaway a few goodies. Methinks it's time to finally get my butt off of Facebook once and for all.

Whenever I make a purchase on Amazon, at the top of the page it asks me if I want to post on FB what I just purchased. I don't think so!!!

I don't click on anything on FB.

What's most disturbing to me, though, is that by one of my friends granting permission for this ridiculous app, Amazon can also gain my info. There's just something very wrong about that...

You can lock up your FB account so that just the people you want can see your wall. My DD had a FB stalker so all her FB friends/family had to lock up their accounts. No one can even befriend me unless they are already a friend of a friend, (FB speak!). I don't know if that would work for apps or not. I don't do apps.

ETA: FB doesn't have any info on me except my g-mail account that I never use except to get on FB.

People go on Facebook and they expect privacy?

:prfl:

As far as I am concerned nothing on the Net is private. I am astounded that people would think otherwise.

When we are told that we are participating in a Global Village, that is the absolute truth. Because in a village everybody knows everybody else's business.

That is just the way it is.

Ever stop and wonder, just how does Amazon know you have a Facebook account?

What Troke and Double-A said.
Why in the world would anybody who posts their life on Facebook expect any privacy whatsoever.
I am surprised that more stalking and identity theft doesn't happen to people who feel compelled to tell the world their whole life story.

Ha! Yeah, I thought about that. But I think the FB connection is at the top of every Amazon purchase page. I could be wrong. They just want you to push their product for them. Free advertising.

I'm sure Amazon knows a lot about me but I've never had any issues with them. I also know that the govt tracks every credit card purchase we make everywhere. That's what we pay them the big bucks to do, right? <sarcasm off>

What is the difference from telling our whole life story here on TB than on FB? I'm not trying to be snarky, just an honest question.

And a good question it is. I don't know too many people who put all their pictures and their daily routine up for all to see here on TB2K.
The kind of info people share here is not stuff that can readily identify them.
I'm retired military. I have lots of sea stories about my military years but it doesn't identify me.
I have a big mouth when it comes to economic issues but it still doesnt identify me.
I don't post pictures of myself or my family. TB2K is a place to discuss issues of the day not for putting all your identification out there for everyone to see.
Saying that, I don't doubt for a minute that this site and others like Frugals etc. are monitored by the powers that be. Most of us know that and conduct ourselves accordingly.
From what I can see on Facebook, most people are lulled in to a false sense of security and put out far too much personal information.
Post a picture of you, your family, even your car and then say you are going to such and such an event next week and anyone who wanted could probably find you.
My own opinion for what it's worth is not to post anything on the internet that you would be afraid to post in the op/ed page of your local news paper.

I know someone who is an uber liberal, 25 years old, 2 kids, welfare mom who posts everything that happens to them, photos, even locations of where she was when she posted. Favorite restaurants, musicians, etc. A stalkers dream, a dictators joy. Totally clueless, gives her kids fluoride pills because we don't fluoridate our water. I see every move her kids make via fb, her plans, her seductive photos, it's unreal what people will put up. I don't trust her as far as I could throw her, if she thought I prepped, she'd turn my butt in in a heartbeat to get something extra from Uncle Sugar.

its the digital fortress

where not only is your every move monitored, but they will likely send out a search party if you fail to post for three days

it permeates the air, the wifi saturates our pores and the web is inextricably woven into our private lives now

no escape, all you can do is learn to ride the bronco

booking a cruise and having it autoloaded into the facebook newstream is a great way to tell burglars you are gone

i post anything well after the fact, never ahead.

and i know which of my relatives has an incurable gambling addiction by the number of times facebook tells me how often they play casino games online

its the kings highway, ride it with caution

FB is racing toward it's eventual and well-deserved goal of $zero as a publicly traded stock. The market will eventually say 'NO' to FB.

In the meantime, we would do well to say 'NO' to it as well.

It's a loser.

It's not JUST Amazon... has anyone taken a close look at what other apps ask permission to view? Most of these apps are FREE for a reason..... so they can data mine all YOUR information! Take a close read of the EULA for the next app you download before you click "accept"!!

It's not hard to get your IP address when you post on TB or anywhere else, though. Is that right? Unless someone was posting from another computer or got one of those fake IP addresses, anyone who knew what they were doing could find you. I figure if they want me bad enough, they will find me. I say, Come and take it. I've got nothing to hide. If TPTB are concerned about me, then this country has a huge problem.

I delete my cookies and history after every google search or after I open up any new website. But even then, it wouldn't take someone who knew what they were doing any time at all to get the info they wanted, I suppose.

Most APP's do this. No big suprise. Just don't use them. Besides if you've paid taxes you can be found no matter what. LOL

also, on any of the apps, where it says public, click on it and then select only you can see what is posted. that way only you will be able to see and no one else
