[brkg] possible smallpox in Seattle?

Just went to www.komotv.com and they have breaking story:
A plane at Sea-Tac Airport has been sealed off after U.S. Customs officials in New York received an anonymous tip that the inbound 747 from Taipei, Taiwan had someone on board carrying smallpox.

It has not been determined if it is a valid threat yet, but officials are not taking any chances.

Eva Air Flight 32, bound for Newark, N.J. but in Seattle on a scheduled stop-over, has been quarantined as a precaution. No one is being allowed on or off the plane.

Probably nutting, but just in case.

URGENT: Anonymous Tip Says Plane At Sea-Tac Has

The threat was not specific if the person was infected, or carrying a vial of
smallpox.

Again, there has not been any confirmation of smallpox on board. Officials are

Wonder if that means that someone was infected with smallpox or was in possession of a vial or vials of the disease?

An Update from their website-

By KOMO Staff & News Services

SEATTLE - A plane at Sea-Tac Airport has been sealed off after U.S. Customs officials in New York received an anonymous tip that the inbound 747 from Taipei, Taiwan had someone on board carrying smallpox, Port of Seattle officials told KOMO 4 News.

It has not been determined if it is a valid threat yet, but officials are not taking any chances.

Eva Air Flight 32, bound for Newark, N.J. but in Seattle on a scheduled stop-over, has been quarantined as a precaution. No one is being allowed on or off the plane.

Officials now believe the anonymous tip says the passenger is a carrier of the virus, and not carrying the disease in some sort of container. He was sitting in business class.

Officials have been in contact with some of the plane's crewmembers, who went and spoke with the person in question. They say the person is not exhibiting any visible signs of smallpox.

An emergency medical technician is going on board to make a second assessment of the situation. The situation is further delayed as they await interpreters as the man does not speak English.

Again, there has not been any confirmation of smallpox on board. Officials are responding to an anonymous tip.

UPDATE: Passengers Being Let Off Plane At Sea-Tac
December 7, 2001

By KOMO Staff

SEATTLE - Passengers on board Eva Air Flight 32 are now being allowed to deplane. They were originally held on board due to a smallpox scare.

Earlier, the Newark, N.J.-bound plane was been sealed off after U.S. Customs officials in New York received an anonymous tip that the inbound 747 from Taipei, Taiwan had someone on board carrying smallpox, Port of Seattle officials told KOMO 4 News.

Health officials have evaluated the person on board who was said to have the smallpox, and say he does not exhibit any signs of the virus.

Those passengers who were supposed to debark in Seattle will be allowed off the plane. Those who were to continue on to Newark will stay on the plane.

No word yet as to the fate of the person who was said to have the disease.

“Health officials have evaluated the person on board who was said to have the smallpox, and say he does not exhibit any signs of the virus.”

I thought smallpox was asymptomatic for several days. Note, they did not “clear” him of having it, they are just saying he doesn’t have symptoms.

Doesn’t speak English?

If they do a boo-boo on this one and all those people head off as potential carriers...

Yup, I fully trust the authorities to do what’s right. Not!

This one is spooky.

UPDATE:

By KOMO Staff

SEATTLE - Eva Air's Flight 32, bound from Taiwan to Newark, N.J., was held for 2 1/2 hours at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on Friday after an anonymous tipster told U.S. Customs Service agents there might be smallpox on board.

A medic determined the passenger at issue - who was named by the tipster - did not have smallpox, airport spokesman Bob Parker said.

The plane's 157 passengers and 14 crew were allowed to deplane at about 3:30 - some stretching their legs before continuing on to Newark, Parker said.

The tipster called a New York Port Authority detective at JFK Airport about 30 minutes before the flight touched down in Seattle, said Cherise Miles, a spokeswoman for Customs in Chicago.

The tipster identified a passenger by name and said the individual had smallpox, Miles said.

The crew did an initial evaluation and determined the individual "did not have any symptoms of active contagious smallpox," said airport spokesman Bob Parker.

Oh My...They can't possibly "know" in such a short evaluation....

Smallpox scare prompts Sea-Tac Airport to detain plane

12/07/2001

KING5.com

SEATTLE - Passengers on board a 747 flight from Taipei, Taiwan were held on the plane for several hours Friday afternoon at Sea-Tac International Airport due to the possible threat of smallpox.

Officials say an anonymous tip was given to U.S. Customs officials in New York that a person on the plane was either contaminated with or carrying smallpox. The plane, EVA Flight 32 to Newark, New Jersey, with a scheduled stop in Seattle, was quarantined as a precaution, and none of the plane’s 157 passengers or 14 crew members were allowed off.

• What are the symptoms of smallpox?

After inspecting the plane, crew members and health officials said they have not detected any symptoms of smallpox from the particular passenger or any other passengers on the plane. Authorities are in the process of releasing the 152 passengers, but authorities say they plan to detain the suspected passenger for further questioning.

Health officials say that smallpox has an incubation period of 7-14 days, but is not contagious during that time. Officials did not say if the passenger will be detained for further quarantine.

The FBI is involved in the investigation and is trying to find out who made the threat and if there's any validity to it.

"In most cases, it turns out not to be anything of significance and passengers are allowed to depart the aircraft," said Deanna Zachrisson, Sea-Tac Airport spokesperson. When asked if there was a possibility that the passengers on board could be quarantined, Zachrisson said it could be possible, but it has never happened at Sea-Tac. Zachrisson said the search could take a couple of hours.

"We have had a number of these scares since September 11," added Zachrisson. "They've been a regular occurence, but we are relieved that each and every one of these occurences has been a false alarm. We're hoping that this is the case this time."

Other operations at the airport have not been affected by the quarantine. Stay tuned to KING5 News and KING5.com for updates on this developing story.

[perhaps they are going to a safe holding area?]

at any rate, i sure hope they know what they are doing. and i pray this is a hoax.

It can take several hours just to do the smallpox test. It was on one of the many threads or one of the links I've read, can't remember where. I do remember reading the time frame for the test and they could NOT have have done the test that quick.

If the man is carrying the disease he could be able to transmit it per some doctors words yet others say you can not transmit it until you start the fever. I sure hope they keep him and test him. Don't know how soon the test will show positive after contracting the virus.

Dangerous time here think we will start two half doses daily of the vinegar. BTW I finally found a way to get the vinegar down and even my daughter doesn't balk at it. If anyone is interested let me know and I will post.

Please do post your vinegar trick - could be very beneficial for those with children.

exe,

Hemple used it for a cure in 1873 and no one died in his whole town and those who got smallpox had very light cases.

This a the link where I first posted the information on TB. It is a thread SH had started with a link re homopathy cures. When I was reading at the website of the link I came across the (bolded below)words hidden in the midst of a bunch of other stuff. I will see if I can find the private message I sent to BB when he asked for more details and where to get the old fashioned vinegar. It has more details that I don't want to post to this thread as it may be to much thread drift.

Basically the way I found for us to take the half dose of vinegar without gagging is to put 1 Tablespoon of vinegar in a glass glass. Put 1 tablespoon of sugar and two tablesspoons of water. Stir. Get a large glass of cold or ice water on the side. Eat a saltine cracker then drink some vinegar, take a swallow of water.
Repeat proceedure three or four times until vinegar is gone.

If you need to use the full dose as Hemple said as preventions for an adult then mix TWO tablespoons sugar, TWO tablespoons of vinegar, and three or four tablespoons of water. It is not so bad this way. First we tried it with honey in a 8 oz glass of water but could not get it all down as it tasted just awful.

FROM MY ORIGINAL POST WHEN I FIRST FOUND THE INFO -

I think a small part of the information found in SH's link should be
posted
to highlight it. This is something anyone can do and unless you know
you
are alergic to vinegar then it could be of great use.

I just wonder what kind of vinegar. I think most likely some type of
apple
vinegar as back then I am not sure they had the white distilled like we
have now.

"For Small Pox one thing I uncovered was Hempel's work with
Acetic Acid in the form of
VINEGAR!! Two Tbsp after breakfast and in the evening for two
weeks. To half-grown and
feeble persons he gave 1/2 this dose. Almost the whole village had
been stricken and not
one died even if they had been quite stricken. 8 out of 10 who were
exposed didn't even
catch it all. "A small number of the sick was but little affected;
pustules were few and sequela
none."
Med. and Surg. Reporter, March 1873. "

BTW I was on the Bragg site again this week and noticed they have now put vinegar used for smallpox by Hemple in the exact quotes as I found, HEY HEY maybe they read TB2K and saw it here

Will see if I can find that PM I sent BB and send more info your way if your PM works.

I noted that the article on Drudge Report said that the incubation period for smallpox is 7-14 days, "but is NOT contagious during that time." This is directly opposite all the reports on smallpox that have been posted here on the subject. I'm wondering if the health officials in Seattle are purposely being evasive on the subject for fear of public panic?

Mrs. Peavey, everything I have read here and elsewhere about smallpox has said that you, personally, are NOT contagious before showing symptoms, in particular spewing sputum or ruptured blisters. However, if your clothes, for instance, are contaminated with someone else's pox scabs, you could pass it on that way.

susie0884

Dooming since 1998
To quote someone of off FR: Usually the rash begins to form in the oral mucosa and throat, then spreading to the skin. At the point the rash begins to form in the mouth, the disease is contagious, and for the first week afterwards it is at it's most contagious.

This is also my understanding from reading some CDC material awhile back. The point being that since the rash begins in the mouth, and nose, the person would then be contagious before it erupts on the skin, and is more visible. (Though they would be pretty sick). This to me is the only thing that makes sense, or there would never have been small pox outbreaks. Who in their right mind (except medical workers) is going to hang out around someone once you can see the rash, other than their immediate family? So if only that kind of person was contagious, only his immediate family members would get it, and that would be the end of the "epidemic." But obviously that was not the case.

Also; another quote from the online course for Nurses on small pox:

Signs and Symptoms. During an incubation period of ten to fifteen days the infected person will feel normal, but is already contagious. The first signs of the onset of the disease are severe flu-like symptoms, malaise, headache, backache, marked prostration, delirium, fever and in some cases, abdominal pain. In another three or four days, tiny red dots appear over the entire body. The rash starts as tense blisters or vesicles, 6mm in diameter and progress to turbid fluid filled lesions (pustules). The pustules progess to shrunken and drying lentil-like crusts in the skin, which eventually separate leaving a sunken scar. An identifying characteristic of smallpox is its foul and distinctive odor arising from the victim's pustules, which once smelled is never forgotten.

Onebyone, this is FANTASTIC!!! Thanks for the 1873 remedy info - I'm passing it along to a friend. One thing's for sure - if smallpox ever does break out - this board is gonna be vinegar drunk! LOL

We all hope the Seattle incident is a hoax. But it could be that someone *in the know* blew the whistle by alerting authorities who then checked the person's health out thoroughly onboard that plane.

IF the person truly has smallpox he is not yet contagious and showing signs in his mouth, through fever, or with blisters. He will eventually though - so it will be interesting to see how long they detain him. That's IF he truly has smallpox.

Deb Mc, if you get any more news on this aspect, please holler our way. Thanks!

If its a hoax we can all get ready for an entire rash of such reports to start coming down the pike - which will confuse matters to an uncomfortable degree. I truly hope that's all it is.

Here is the info OBO was kind enough to send me. I kept it of course and went right out and got four bottles of Bragg's vinegar. A good health food store should have it. God bless.

Hi BB

I have been researching smallpox for a couple of weeks and have included a couple of links of very good info.

Regarding the Braggs found this in a link SH gave on his post. Seems that vinegar has been used successfully to prevent smallpox and to cure it more quickly. My list of items is at bottom of this pm.

Bragg vinegar can be purchased at health food stores, at Kroger, and Publix though you may have to request a particular store order it. It is the old fashion kind of vinegar that still has the mother in it. It not distilled or heat treated like other vinegars we use today. That is what Hemple used.

Canada Sue gave a VERY good description on how to set up a clean room to nurse patients who get small pox at this link. I suggest printing her part of the post as it is so good and important.

http://www.timebomb2000.com/vb/show...hlight=smallpox

The research I have read from officals plans to have people stay inside their homes during a smallpox outbreak as hospitals would be to overwhemed and it would cause to much contagion to let people out.

Due to these posts and other information I have read regarding smallpox and viruses I have purchased the following to care for us in an outbreak of smallpox--

Please note NON of this is a medical recommendation as I am not a nurse or doctor just a mom who has cared for children for 27 years Just letting you know what I bought and how I plan to care for us. You of course will have to make your own informed decisions. I bought enough for Three people for 4 weeks.

Sterile Gauze Mirasorb Sponges- caring for sores.

Braggs Apple Organic Apple cider vinegar 8
bottles

**Olive Leaf Extract* - taking now as preventative

Lavender essential oil- killed plague in England

Oregano essential oil - must be (Origanum vulgare)

Sage essential oil - antseptic and reduces fever

Tylenol - pain and fever* bought Advil but decided not to use since virus

Vicks Chloraseptic throat spray for pain

Hyro. Peroxide for washing sores

Pedialyte - to replace electrolytes from vommiting

Bleach, Bleach, Bleach to make everything sterile

Benadryl ointment for itching

Soy Dream Vanllia drink - to get some protein down

Ensure - for protein again

Juicy Juicy packs - individual packs to be sterile

Muslim to make barrier garmet and face masks

surgical gloves - important - two packs 50 ea pk

Flintstone vitamins- might can not swallow others

sheets & pillow cases- may have to change several
times day

square containers for bleach water disinfecting

Couch medicine- Decongetion and One to stop cough

Extra wash cloths lots of vomiting to clean up

Distilled water- water on sores must be clean

Liquid detergent to wash extra linens.

Downy to make sheets soft and fresh smelling
[they say smallpox smells VERY bad.]

This is all I can think of at this time.

Of course we have food for several weeks too as we would not be able to go out.

Hope that helps

I'd bet they are.

According to the man who likely has the best handle on the strain of smallpox most likely to show up (and helped create it) Ken Alibek, the Russian Military strain they made in 20 ton lots has an incubation period of 5-6 days and the carrier becomes aerosol infective the day before they start showing any symptoms.

The only contribution I can make to this thread so far is to note that we could also see the anthrax pattern hold insofaras a smallpox or blackpox strain -- i.e., use our own stuff, processed as we used to before 1972, thereby denying any intelligence from strain ID.

That said, I don't care where the strain came from -- this to me is a much more serious long-term threat than one or two fissile weapons, ugly as that might be.

How did the Soviets plan to do their bio attacks? Wasn't it to use somewhere around 6 different bio materials, thereby hopelessly complicating triage?

SMALLPOX

INTRODUCTION

Variola, the causative agent of smallpox, is the most notorious of the poxviruses (family Poxviridae). Smallpox was an important cause of morbidity and mortality in the developing world until recent times. In 1980, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared endemic smallpox eradicated, with the last occurrence in Somalia in 1977.

Variola represents a significant threat as a BW agent. Variola is highly infectious and is associated with a high mortality rate and secondary spread. Currently, the majority of the US population has no immunity, little vaccine is readily available, and no effective treatment exists for the disease. Currently, 2 WHO-approved and inspected repositories remain: the CDC in the US and Vector Laboratories in Russia; however, clandestine stockpiles may exist.

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY - SMALLPOX

Variola virus is highly infectious by aerosol, environmentally stable, and can retain infectivity for long periods. Infection throughcontaminated fomites is infrequent. After exposure to aerosolized virus, the virus multiplies locally in the respiratory tract. After an incubation period of 7-17 days, variola is spread hematogenously (primary viremia) to regional lymph nodes, where additional replication occurs. Subsequently, variola is spread hematogenously (secondary viremia) to small dermal blood vessels, where skin inflammatory changes (pox) occur. Two types of smallpox generally are recognized. Variola major, the most severe form, has a fatality rate of 30% in unvaccinated individuals and 3% in those previously vaccinated. Variola minor, a more mild form of smallpox, produces lethality in only 1% of unvaccinated individuals.

CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS - SMALLPOX

After a 7- to 17-day incubation period, symptoms begin acutely with high fever, headache, rigors, malaise, myalgias, vomiting, and abdominal and back pain. During the initial phase, 15% of patients develop delirium, and 10% of light-skinned patients may develop a fleeting erythematous exanthem. After 2-3 days, an exanthem develops on the face, hands, and forearms and extends gradually to the trunk and lower extremities. The lesions progress synchronously from macules to papules to vesicles to pustules that often are umbilicated, such as in molluscum contagiosum. Centrifugal distribution of the rash is an important diagnostic feature, with a greater number of lesions on the face and extremities compared to the trunk. Patients are most infectious on days 3-6 after the onset of fever. Virus is shed from oropharyngeal and respiratory secretions.

The above-described manifestations are known as variola major. In variola minor (ie, alastrim), cutaneous lesions are similar but smaller and fewer in number. Patients are not as ill as those who have variola major are. Small numbers (3%) of patients develop hemorrhagic lesions, and these patients typically die of disease before papules develop. Flat smallpox with macular, soft, velvety lesions develops in 4% of patients and forebodes a poor prognosis. Modified smallpox occurs in those who have been vaccinated and develop a mild prodrome with rapid development of lesions and crusting by day 7. Frequently patients with modified disease form no pustules.

DIAGNOSIS - SMALLPOX

The most difficult aspect of diagnosing smallpox is the current lack of familiarity with the disease for most physicians. Other viral exanthems, such as chicken pox, erythema multiforme with bullae, or allergic contact dermatitis, can look similar. Smallpox is distinguished from chicken pox by the centrifugal distribution of its rash and the presence of lesions at the same stage of development everywhere on the body. The failure to recognize mild cases of smallpox in persons with partial immunity permits rapid person-to-person transmission. Exposed people may shed virus from the oropharynx without ever manifesting disease.

The usual method of diagnosis is demonstration of characteristic virions on electron microscopy of vesicular scrapings. Gispen modified silver stain is rapid but relatively insensitive. When microscopy is unavailable, the gel diffusion test, in which vesicular fluid antigen from a pus lesion is incubated with vaccine hyperimmune serum, may be used. However, none of the above tests differentiate smallpox from monkeypox or cowpox. PCR techniques have been developed and may provide for more accurate diagnosis in the near future.

TREATMENT - SMALLPOX

It is critical for medical personnel to recognize a vesicular exanthem in possible terrorist areas or warfare theaters as possible smallpox. Immediate reporting of all possible cases must be made to public health authorities and to the chain of command. Strict quarantine with respiratory isolation for 17 days is applied to all people in direct contact with the index case or cases. All personnel exposed to either weaponized variola or clinical cases must be vaccinated immediately. Immediate vaccination is effective at ameliorating or preventing illness if accomplished within a few days of exposure. Give vaccinia immune globulin (VIG) to patients who cannot receive the vaccine. Treatment of smallpox is mainly supportive. The antiviral agent, cidofovir, is effective in vitro and may be involved in treatment of symptomatic illness.

PREVENTION/PROPHYLAXIS - SMALLPOX

Smallpox vaccine (attenuated vaccinia virus) is administered by intradermal inoculation with a bifurcated needle. The permanent scar results from a process known as scarification. A vesicle usually appears 5-7 days after inoculation; scabbing over and healing of the site occur over the next 1-2 weeks. Common adverse effects include low-grade fever and axillary lymphadenopathy. The most frequent complication is inadvertent inoculation to other skin or mucous membrane sites or to other people.

The absolute contraindication to vaccination is significant impairment of systemic immunity. Other relative contraindications include immunosuppression, HIV, pregnancy, and history or evidence of eczema. Evidence exists that VIG is of value in postexposure prophylaxis when administered within several days following smallpox exposure and concurrently with vaccination. VIG can be obtained from the CDC and is administered at a dose of 0.6 mL/kg IM.

Therein lies the very key!

We're not thinking nasty enough on this thread, are we, Redeye. You've hit the nail on the head. Recently a PBS special offering some experts time to air their opinions covered this point - and it is the true reality we are facing.

Smallpox with about five other nasties thrown in. How do you deal with that? Question of the 21st century.

Dorothy,

You're welcome!

Redeye,

I'd read an article where the Russians had planned delivery based on refrigerated capsules on the warheads. Part of their ICBM arsenal had their warheads replaced with refrigerated capsules that held bioweapons, such as smallpox & etc...

The article went on to say that Russia's gameplan was to attack some of our cities with conventional nukes, and then to hit Chicago, Boston and a few others with smallpox payloads. That would ensure that America was brought to its knees within a short time.

I can't remember the article name, but I'm pretty sure it was posted here (it also mentioned that Russia now had warheads aimed at China, if that helps any)...

It makes one wonder why Russia doesn't just go ahead and release a bio mixed cocktail in the U.S. and China and heck why not Europe while they're at it. What are they waiting for? And we know terrorists have bio weapons. What are they waiting for? Don't they have antidotes?

Wow, what a load off my mind! I feel so much better now, knowing that they had an EMT make the determination that the passenger did not have smallpox. Probably someone with in-depth knowledge of smallpox and its manifestations, and hands-on experience in dealing with potential cases. Guess the EMT had a miniature lab setup there in the plane with him, and did the tests right on the spot, no? Well...at least they got the names and addresses of the passengers and crew, so they can track them down, if need be....

Yo, Chuck, interesting post. extract: "Immediate vaccination is effective at ameliorating or preventing illness if accomplished within a few days of exposure."

I'll bet that works pretty good if you know that you've been exposed to an infectious carrier, and when. Geez, my four days are almost up, vaccinate me right now! But if you don't know you've been exposed, because the infectious carrier displayed no obvious symptoms, and the symptoms won't manifest themselves in you for another two weeks or so, it'll probably be too late to vaccinate that poor sucker, no??? Hmmmmmm........
