Went by Walmart to stock up on Coleman fuel today. The had 4 (four) one liter plastic bottles and were charging like 3.79 ea. for them.

WTH? I was expecting to see a shelf filled with one gallon metal cans?

I asked the old man working in the sporting good section and he said they had stopped carrying the 1 gal. cans but I might still find some in stock at one of the other Walmarts in town.

I asked him if the 4 one liter bottles were all they had and he said that's it.

Not good.

That's how big business works. How can Coleman sell you the stuff that uses the 1lb. propane canisters if you won't turn loose of you perfectly functional older gear.:shr:

You DO know you can REFILL those 1lb propane bottles, right?

No I didn't know. I have some full ones but how do you fill them?

I dont think hes talking about the propane bottles.. and walmart is still selling those.

I think he means the coleman gas for stoves. I just got one of those coleman gas stoves for free on freecycle, cleaned it up and it works perfect. My walmart has tons of the 1 gallon cans and I stocked up on 8 of them when I got the stove. Think they were in the 7 dollar range per gallon.

Actually, I have been waiting for this to happen as gasoline keeps on creeping past $4.00. They couldn't keep selling Coleman fuel for under $4.50 a gallon if gasoline was headed that way and not have somebody start using it again in their cars and trucks. After all, TPTB would lose big in road taxes if everybody switched over.

If you can't find Coleman fuel in one gallon cans, remember that both Lowes and Home Depot carry Naphtha in one gallon cans. Coleman fuel is Naphtha, and both will work int the stoves.

Likewise, both Lowes and Home Depot also carry one gallon cans of SLX denatured Alcohol for use in alcohol stoves and heaters. Don't try using either SLX or other alcohol based fuels in your Coleman stove though, it will eat out the copper lines and rubber o-rings and parts.

Our Walmart phased out Coleman as well as the generic brand of their fuel some 6-12 months ago. A couple months ago I was able to pick up a coleman dual fuel stove for about half price and I doubt if they have any liquid fuel appliances now. I was brought up on Coleman fuel lanterns and stoves and over the years accumulated a good stash of fuel always picking a couple gallons when I saw it. Never had any go "bad" yet.
Looks like time to expand kerosene/gasoline supplies a bit. Para.

I used to work for a KOA and we refilled propane bottles.

Given my experience, I would be VERY interested in how one refills 1 pound no-reuse bottles for propane...safely....

Price of our cans went from 4.89 to 5.69 to 7. (something) and is now 9.00 +...and they're not re-stocking, just letting the last of them be sold I guess.

Been re-filling the one pounders for years.

I use them for starting up my wood stove - when in a hurry.

Tips

- chill the 1 pound cannister.

- invert the 5 pounder while filling.

- don't expect it to fill over three quarters.

- empty one pounders are usually free!

Yea, I AM talking about the propane bottles and I bought a couple of adaptors (one for my sister) at NORTHERN TOOL. Read the instructions.

No colemans fuel is bad; but thanks, Loup for identifying an alternative.

Wonder if the sporting goods stores are still carrying it?

In Cow Hampshire, there are still some one gallon containers on the shelf. $6.89 per copy.

I bought 4. Can I be accused of hoarding?

Very true except locally Home Depot sells naptha only in 1 quart jugs at over $6 per.

Propane is for people that don't know any better! I have like 4 Coleman lanterns and 3 stove's one of them made in 1952 & a lantern 1950, I also know how to make these run on almost anything including K-1, I keep like 10 gallons of camp fuel on hand and I put the date on the cans and rotate them out as I use them up. Note a can of camp fuel will last 7 years and once opened about a year.

I would be VERY interested to know what generator you are runing K-1 thru for a camp fuel lantern or stove....

I've repaired stoves n lanterns for a fair number of years and I am unaware of a generator that will handle BOTH K-1 and Coleman Fuel...

You can use the same generator but you need to preheat it before it will work and yes it will clog after some time and need to be cleaned, you can also use denatured alcohol the same way but less likely to clog the gen. use some tinfoil to make a preheating pan and use a little pece of rag or paper to act as a wick. Coleman makes a lantern that run on K-1 and can be found at most Coleman outlet stores.

I got rid of the old coleman stuff when the new ones came out that burned unleaded gas. Why pay all that money for coleman fuel and then have to hunt for it to if you are out camping?

Good move and you could still get a clogged generator from using unleaded gas because you can't tell what kind additives and how much is in that batch it's just the chance you take. It happened to me just once with a lantern and all the other Coleman unleaded duel-fuel products I have no problmes ever with them.

Went by the wally-world today, and checked on the supply of Coleman's fuel. There were about 8 gallons in gal cans available, all thoroughly dinged up.

Which brought this to mind: I is seldom that I have seen an un-dinged up can of coleman's fuel at a wally-world. Seems everytime I was in the market for a gallon, I'd have to sort through a bunch of cans to find one that was in good shape. Crushed corners, dented sides, crushed handles.

Anyone else notice this? Perhaps that has something to do with their removing them from the shelves? [eta:] Perhaps the cans aren't standing up too well to their shipping and storage processes? If the cans leaked in transit, it could be quite a fire hazard.

The alternative brand (can't place the name just now) was nowhere to be found.

Since i just started stocking Coleman fuel, I have noticed that a lot of them are dented all to heck, I take the ones that are not beat all to hell, and leave the rest behind :)

That said, I picked up another 2 today. I did noticed the smaller bottles of the Coleman camp fuel, but I spoke to the sporting goods guy and they plan on having the larger ones as well there for the foreseeable future.
