CORONA Viral Interference: possible explanation for no/few flu cases?

I don't know anything about this doctor, but in this video he talks about "viral interference", as a possible explanation for low flu cases during the corona pandemic.

Apparently, viral interference has been studied/known for years and is explained in this paper: Viral interference and interferon - PubMed Basically the explanation here is that "viral interference is a phenomenon for which a cell infected by a virus becomes resistant toward a second outcoming infection by a superinfectant virus. "

And if this is a phenomenon that virologists have studied, and have known about, and read about, and written research papers about..... then why were they warning people about a possible "Twindemic" back at the end of last summer?

I think I had the "regular" flu in September, and I think I had an "ordinary" cold last month. No, I didn't go anywhere to get tested. I never had a fever or shortness of breath. It felt like a regular cold, and I treated it as such with the usual remedies, and it departed about the 10th day.

I'm not looking forward to the spring allergy season. I hope we are done with masks. I don't breathe well through my nose in the early spring. And, yes, I will monitor for fever, but I went through this in August with ragweed season. What a pain under normal circumstances! Having to wear a mask makes it worse.

I don't think the Covid test can tell the difference between the flu and Covid. I would think you need a lab to verify what virus you actually have but that cost $$$ so they call it Covid because you know, Trump bad.
Now that creepy Joe is in, they will lift the restrictions and cases will fall and life will go back to rainbows and unicorns.:spns:

That guy is ok from the things I've seen in the past. Politics aside, I'm surprised that, as far as I'm aware of, none of the talking head media scientists were down playing the the co-infection doom with this theory.

Two things.

First, I don't think the "covid" tests differentiated from the flu and covid, and they certainly couldn't tell the difference between a cold and covid, since they are both corona viruses. All three were showing as c19, facts bedamned.

Second, it's likely that all of the handwashing and social distancing kept the flu from spreading.

Actually, three points, because I think I should get brownie points for not putting "duh" at the end of both of those statements.

Hygiene is certainly important in slowing the spread of disease
But, still doesn't explain why it stopped the flu but not Corona

It's my understand the flu is mostly passed by touching a doorknob (or desk, or book, or whatever) and then touching your face. With mask use in public, you aren't touching your mouth or nose, and most of us are conscious of not touching our eyes now, too. We wash our hands now before we touch our face, mostly.

Corona, OTOH, is easier to pass through the air either by breathing it in or having it float into your eyes. Or that's what they tell us, which doesn't mean it's the truth.

Given what is supposedly true, it just seems the easiest explanation is that it's a combination of the corona test counting all three as C19, and the fact less people are sick because of the handwashing, etc.

Last Saturday I woke up to a 101.9 temp, chills, headache and body aches. Temp lasted just 24 hours the rest a few days. Sent for covid saliva test. It tests for both stains, came back negative. I would not have gone and got tested except for the fact Im going to see my grandkids 17 mo & 4

I didn’t even know there was a saliva test. Shows how concerned I am now since I’ve already had it. No, that’s not quite right. I’m still very concerned, but not paying as much attention as I had been before I got it.

Anyway, I’m glad you’re negative. Enjoy your visit with your grands!

98% of my socializing is on the net. The 2% is via phone or talking while socially distanced. That's why I'm in no hurry to be tested and get on their lists.

I was talking with one of my clients this morning. They were going to get their covid vaccine. I mentioned that they would still have to wear a mask even though they get the shot which led her to tell me that the reason we had no flu cases was because of all the mask wearing. I asked her when it might be appropriate to not wear a mask and she said never. All I could do was just shake my head in disbelief. The delusion is strong in that one!

Well the COXID test may well NOT differentiate between CV and a cold.
\Now Influenza is a VERY different organism. If it can't tell THAT difference it's a useless test anyway.
