Though I was originally going to put this into the Firearms room in the thread with related historical videos, with all that's been going on of late and the many of us in "non-permissive environments" I figured it would be better on the main board particularly considering the "ad hoc" nature of a lot of these weapons...Housecarl

Today we are discussing some of the hand-to-hand melee arms of the First World War - specifically trench knives, trench clubs, and field spades. The up-close confined nature of trench warfare in WWI was not anticipated by its planners, and the infantry rifle/bayonet combination which had been developed for use on the open field was of little use in the trenches.

In response, troops adapted a wide variety of improvised weapons that were more suitable. Some became issued formal items, and some remained ersatz and handmade throughout the war.

Perhaps the most effective was the field spade, which was often sharpened around its while perimeter and could be used as a very utilitarian hand weapon in a variety of situations.

Some other stuff on You Tube.....Please note I'm posting these for discussion purposes and to suggest alternatives or backups for the CCWs out there...I cannot suggest strongly enough that if you are "really interested" in this to seek out training from a competent instructor....Housecarl

What would also be useful is to have as many as possible trained to ALSO be able to skillfully defend themselves with A 6 foot HARDWOOD STICK (Quarterstaff) !

I am so proud of my sister who took a martial arts class (in her 40's) , (Bo staff) using sticks for defense, and NOW in her 70's I would feel sorry for anybody who tried to attack her, if she could get a hold of any form of stick, broom, shovel, etc. FAiling that, she would just have to shoot them (she packs). She also won a gold medal in fencing and is no old lady to mess with.

Nearly anything, anywhere can be an improvised weapon from a pen/pencil to the antenna from a car or old radio. Yank a cord of a PC or light, slide something heavy over one end and tie a knot and you have a weapon. Rolled up magazine. Straw filled with liquid and thumb over the end makes a decent throat punch. Sock with a glass salt shaker in it. Stop thinking you need the latest Kmart special. Your mind is your greatest weapon-the rest just build from that point.

One of the first things I learned as a correctional care nurse was if you have the smell of fish in the air, someone will be showing up at the infirmary for stiches very soon. Inmates used to buy a 1 1/2 pound can of "Jack-Mack" mackerel put it in a sock and start whomping on some guys head, they usually stopped when the can burst or they were pulled off, whichever came first....have seen TBI's from this (no surprise there)...if they just wanted to send a message, they used a bar of soap instead...that would just embed the threads from the sock in your skull.

I like the American approach to trench fighting MUCH better...

Well ... the three feet of cold steel can be an issue.

But I've never had trouble (so far) handling a riot gun in tight quarters. The muzzle of a 12 gauge makes a decent biscuit cutter as is even without a bayonet, if the gun runs empty.

Trench fighting is a nasty business no matter how it's done. I'd sooner not participate, given a choice.

Amen. Thing is you have similar issues in a hallway or stairway....That being said no two situations are going to be completely the same and the overall circumstances are very different between a trench scenario and your home.

Louis Awerbuck taught me and a bunch of other folks a useful low ready maneuvering position with a short shotgun. It compresses the shotgun back against the body yet allows the muzzle to cover an assailant's lower extremities at close quarters while helping protect against gun grabs.

Hollywood teaches a muzzle high sort of port arms position that allows an assailant to get under the gun and attack. Not good ... muzzle low is a better way to work a shotgun close in.

Hollywood has people going about at high ready most of the time with a handgun as well. IMHO that's got as much to do with the weapon being in plain view for the viewers to fully get what's going on than anything else.... the director thinking that's the way we've always done it so....

One might want to be careful on the Dog Brothers link...

Even though NatGeo sanitized it (a LOT!!!) it's going to be kinda rough. Dog Brothers don't ALWAYS recognize the boundary between active participant and attendee-spectator. NOR are there many holds that get barred....so there WILL be blood shed in the vid....

think Frank Dux.

yeah google him.

Yeah. I added that link more to reinforce the fact that this stuff isn't pretty. The degree to which "pack members" get "enthusiastic" is akin to a shark feeding frenzy or a troop of adolescent male chimps on a rampage (probably the better analogy).
