Soldiers accidentally reveal where nuclear weapons stored using apps

US soldiers accidentally reveal top secret locations of nuclear weapons on European bases after classified security protocol training becomes searchable on Google

  • American soldiers stationed at military bases in Europe armed with nuclear weapons have been unknowingly sharing secret protocols and base details
  • Military personnel used flashcard apps to study and memorize the details of the nuclear weapon systems
  • They failed to realize the flashcards containing highly confidential information was available online which anyone could look up
  • Flashcards contained details including info helping soldiers remember which vaults within a base contained nuclear weapons and which ones were empty
  • By simply looking up the names of specific bases thought to contain nuclear weapons details including about passwords, security procedures were revealed
  • Locations of security cameras and duress signal words soldiers can use when compromised were also included
  • The flashcards dated back to 2013 but some were as recent as April 2021
  • Bellingcat then cross-referenced data from the flashcards with other reports and images shared online by soldiers themselves to verify existence of nuclear vaults
  • All flashcards have since been deleted after the military were asked for comment
American soldiers relied on apps to study and memorize the details of the nuclear weapon systems for at least eight years without realizing that the highly confidential information also was available online for anyone to look up

Soldiers stationed on European bases that host nuclear weapons unwittingly exposed a number of sensitive details through apps that made top secret information appear publicly in online searches.

The details included classified locations of nuclear weapons on bases, and secret code and duress words that are supposed to be only known to members of the military.

But the information appears to have been included in online study aids used by soldiers.

Flashcards were used in studying and learning apps known as Chegg, Quizlet, and Cram, according to Bellingcat which conducted a lengthy investigation.

The study aids were extremely detailed and contained information about base security and the specific locations of nuclear devices across Europe. They were used to help soldiers remember which vaults within a base contained nuclear weapons and which ones remained empty.

Although seemingly containing a number of acronyms, each flashcard set could be further Googled to reveal more detailed information.

Although the presence of American nuclear weapons in Europe has been detailed in the past through various leaked documents, photos and statements by retired officials, their specific locations are still officially secret. Governments neither confirm nor deny their presence.

But Bellingcat was able to find flashcards posted by soldiers at all six bases in Europe that are reported to store nuclear weapons. The position of cameras, which vaults contain weapons, which vaults remain empty and the types of equipment used were just some of the classified details publicly exposed.

By searching Google and looking up the names of specific bases across Europe thought to contain nuclear weapons, the information was freely available.

A set of 70 flashcards titled 'Study!' on Chegg appeared to note the exact shelters containing the weapons.

Secrecy about US nuclear weapons deployments in Europe does not exist to protect the weapons from terrorists, but only to protect politicians and military leaders from having to answer tough questions about whether NATO's nuclear-sharing arrangements still make sense today. This is yet one more warning that these weapons are not secure,' said Jeffrey Lewis, director of the East Asia Nonproliferation Program at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies to Bellingcat.

Some flashcards appear to have been online and publicly visible for as long as eight years with some as recent as April 2021.

One picture that came up in searches showed American soldiers posing for a photograph taken at Volkel Air Base in the Netherlands. The picture was uploaded to Facebook in 2013 but a nuclear warhead appears to be visible in the photo.

By cross-referencing the photograph with data from the flashcards, the site was able to verify the existence of some of the nuclear vaults.

When approached for comment the Dutch Ministry of Defense said the nuclear device pictured was inert, adding that the photograph 'should not have been taken, let alone published.'

Experts said that the findings represented serious breaches of security protocols and raised renewed questions about US nuclear weapons deployment in Europe.

'There are so many fingerprints that give away where the nuclear weapons are that it serves no military or safety purpose to try to keep it secret. Safety is accomplished by effective security, not secrecy. Granted, there may be specific operational and security details that need to be kept secret, but the presence of nuclear weapons does not,' said Hans Kristensen of the Federation of American Scientists.

'The real purpose of secrecy is to avoid a contentious public debate in countries where nuclear weapons are not popular.'

A spokesperson for the US Air Force said they were aware flashcard apps were used by soldiers and are now investigating the suitability of information published on the platforms.

The spokesperson would not discuss past or current security protocols.

Bellingcat sent a list of 50 flashcards it had found when approaching the US Military for comment over the last month. All the examples quoted appear to have been taken down.

Unbelievable. Back in the day, heads would have rolled during and after the Article 32 investigations.
With all the other new directions (being polite) that are being ordered, I continue to conclude it is all being done purposely with the ultimate goal of destroying America.

Protocols need to be followed for this. Classified info of this nature needs to have controls

Oh there are controls, but there are no adults in the room to enforce them. Lawlessness is the virus of our times. You see it in situations large and small. There are so few serious people left in our most important institutions. It is the problem that undergirds so many of the issues discussed here.

Putin says ready to "go far" in U.S. relations

Gleb Bryanski Reuters 12:56 p.m. CDT, May 5, 2012

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's President-elect Vladimir Putin is ready to go far in developing ties between Russia and the United States provided the relationship is equal, Interfax news agency quoted Putin's foreign policy aide as saying on Saturday.

Putin discussed bilateral relations at a closed-door meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama's top security aide Tom Donilon at his Novo-Ogaryovo residence outside Moscow on Friday, three days before his inauguration ceremony at the Kremlin.

"Putin emphasized that in developing the relationship with the United States, Russia is ready to go really far, on condition that the Americans will act on the principles of an equal and mutually respectful partnership," Yuri Ushakov was quoted as saying.

Ushakov said Donilon handed Putin a letter from Obama, calling it "a multi-page detailed document, whose main message is that Obama is ready to cooperate with Putin in order to move forward on the path of the creation of partnership between the United States and Russia".

Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov and the U.S. embassy in Russia declined to comment on the meeting.

Putin plans to make his first foreign visit as president later this month to the United States where he will take part in the G8 leaders' summit as well as meet Obama. Putin's second major foreign visit will be to China at the start of June.

Putin, who tried to keep a low profile in foreign policy issues during his stint as prime minister, last met Obama for a caviar breakfast at Novo-Ogaryovo in July 2009.

Obama made "reset" of U.S. relations with Russia one of his top foreign policy priorities. He had a good working relationship with departing Russian President Dmitry Medvedev who will now become prime minister.

As prime minister, Putin has held regular meetings with former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, an architect of the Cold War policy of detente towards the Soviet Union.

Putin extensively used anti-American rhetoric in the run-up to March 4 presidential election accusing U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton of stirring protests against his 12-year rule by encouraging "mercenary" Kremlin foes.

The two former Cold War foes still differ over issues including the Syrian crisis and U.S. plans for a missile defense shield in Europe. Many observers believe the relationship may deteriorate during Putin's six-year presidency.

A top Russian general warned this week that Moscow could carry out pre-emptive strikes on future NATO missile defense installations. NATO called such threats "unjustified" and said the system posed no threat to Russia's security.

Obama was caught on camera in March telling Medvedev that he will have "more flexibility" to deal with contentious issues such as missile defense after the U.S. presidential election in November.

Obama, who holds his first political rallies of the 2012 campaign on Saturday, has been criticized by opponents for being too soft on Russia and is likely to step up criticism ahead of the election.

Obama invites Russian strategic bombers to visit U.S.

July 17, 2012 Interfax

Two Russian Tupolev Tu-95MS strategic bombers will fly to the Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana, United States, in 2013 under an agreement reached during a recent visit of senior officers from the Russian Long-Range Air Force to the United States, Long-Range Air Force commander Lt. Gen. Anatoly Zhikharev said on Tuesday. Zhikharev made the announcement at a news conference.

"There will also be a return visit in 2013 - two American [Boeing] B-52 strategic bombers will land at our air force base in Engels, Saratov region, in 2013," he said.

U.S. officers are due to pay an inspection visit to the Russian base next week, he added. In comments on the Russian officers' visit to the United States, Zhikharev said: "Our mission had the task of finding out whether our aircraft would be able to visit the U.S., looking at the combat training of American strategic air force pilots, looking at the state of airfields and logistic facilities."

"I think this form of cooperation will develop further," he said. Asked whether the Tu-95MS bombers, which were manufactured in the 80s, were obsolete, Zhikharev said they would remain in use "for many years." Citing the United States' B-52 Stratofortress jets, made in the early 50s, he said: "The Americans believe that they will remain in service for another 30 years."

BRUSSELS, April 25 (RIA Novosti)

Russian warships will be equipped with NATO navigation and communications systems to improve coordination in anti-piracy missions around the world, Chief of the Russian General Staff Nikolai Makarov said on Wednesday.

The issue has been discussed during a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council in Brussels.

“We decided to install standard NATO navigation and communications systems on our warships,” Makarov said.

NATO warships have been patrolling the pirate-infested waters off the Somali coast since 2008, as part of Operation Ocean Shield. NATO has recently extended its mission in the Gulf of Aden and adjacent areas until 2014.

Russia joined the international anti-piracy mission in the region in 2008. Russian warships have successfully escorted more than 130 commercial vessels from various countries since then.

Task forces from the Russian Navy, usually led by Udaloy class destroyers, operate in the area on a rotating basis.

A task force from Russia’s Northern Fleet, led by the Udaloy class destroyer Vice Admiral Kulakov, will arrive in the Gulf of Aden in the beginning of May to join the anti-piracy mission.

Guess Who's Coming To Red Flag? If You Said The Russians, You're Right...

July 6, 2012

The Russian Federation Air Force will be coming to Nellis AFB, Nevada, to participate in the US Air Force's Red Flag (13-1) exercise. How the world has changed... This would have been absolutely unthinkable even a few years ago. It's actually kinda bizarre now... But at the same time, kinda awesome.

The questions I have are: Will the Russians play the part of Red Air? It will certainly be interesting to see how the Russians react to the US interpretation of their tactics and doctrine... Also, I have to wonder how the Russian play-acting/dress-up the 64th and 65th Aggressors do will go over...

Anyways, here is an excerpt from the Voice of Russia article -- they kinda buried the lede...

"In spring of 2012 it became known that the Russian Air Force is to participate in the Red Flag training exercise in the fall of 2012 together with Americans. From 8 until 19 of October, Red Flag Air Combat Exercise 13-1 will be held at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada (the exercises are numbered in accordance with the fiscal years, and exercise in the fall will be number one in the 2013 fiscal year). Like India, who participated in the Red Flag several years earlier using its Russian-made SU-30 MKI, Russia will get a chance this year to test its aircraft in realistic combat maneuvers with USAF aircraft.
This chance is very important, since up until now the only Russian aircraft of the fourth generation which fought in a real combat situation against western aircraft has been the MIG -29, but the possibility of deploying it in the conditions of very specific wars of 1991 and 1999 was limited. Under such circumstances, the chance to test modernized Russian aircraft such as the SU -27 SM, SU-30M2, MIG -29SM and other strike aircraft - despite simulations, they are still against real western aircraft and pilots - is too attractive to be miss out on."

UPDATE: The USAF confirms the Russians are going to be attending Red Flag 13-1 at Nellis AFB, Nevada, this October.

I suspect that SOME (not all) of the problem here is that the military now has the first generation of young people who were raised entirely online, with a lot of that time on Smart Phones.

Some of the potential problems that might result from this situation were brought up in the book I-Gen, which is already getting dated after just three or four years but showed how young people wired in nearly from birth, really think that such communication is normal and unless they are IT, people, just don't think about the risks involved.

They are all used to practice living on their devices and using them as their "memory banks," hence putting flashcards up that are designed to help them memorize something seems to make perfect sense to them.

Changing that mentality is going to be very difficult, and one would probably need to start with confiscating devices upon arrival at boot camp with intense training on how to use them safely during that time period. Trying to prevent people or their families from using them at all afterward, would probably just result in massive non-compliance.

The current modern world in the West pretty much runs on the internet, that is just how it is.

As a practical matter, it would be impossible to ban all soldiers regardless of age or family status from using the internet or electronic devices.

The spouses and the kids won't or even can't comply, much of daily life in Europe for example is now impossible without this access from school homework to bank accounts and not everyone can live on base.

You could certainly do it during boot camp and only use secured and military-issued devices while at work, but they can't even keep these things out of jails, it would be hopeless to try and prevent military families from using them.

One of our friends is a teacher on an American base in the UK and during the lockdown, she had to teach her high school classes online, just one example.

Why does the military allow any cell phones?
Don't get me going on that. Anything digital is so easy to share, tap into, spy on, manipulate, reverse engineer, etc that it's a foreign intel and NSA wet dream. Voice communication is both hard for a computer to recognize and is transient in nature, so they invent texting which any computer can read and the record has an indefinite life. People just can't get enough of texting and anything they say is perfectly clear for easy computer analyses. Same goes with pictures and docs. Put a camera on a phone and people take and share pics of anything.

It's very delicious koolaid folks, and people just can't get enough of it. A cell phone is a device that's literally leading us to the slaughter no different than a corral pushing cows into the slaughter house.

On base photography has always been officially controlled, and anymore, nobody seems to care. By regulation, anything photographed on a base belongs to the government and to give or release it, it must be reviewed and cleared by public affairs. In reality, no one was willing to enforce it twenty-five years ago, and the very idea of it is foreign to military members these days.

American Universities Erasing Military History
Academics seem to have forgotten that the best way to avoid conflict is to study it.
The revulsion from war history may derive not so much from students’ unwillingness to explore the violent past, but from academics’ reluctance to teach, or even allow their universities to host, such courses. Some dub the subject

I would say a more accurate statement for today's times is, "Never attribute to stupidity that which is adequately explained by evil."

I keep saying that if you expect to engage successfully in war, you'd better make sure your military isn't being used as a social experiment.

How many times must I say it???

THE MILITARY IS NOT A SOCIAL EXPERIMENT!!!

The Left discovered that, unlike clumsy government, the military could streamline social change by fiat. And so it did, once they got control of it.

The anarchy is everywhere.

No, no it ain't ...

“Anarchism stands for the liberation of the human mind from the dominion of religion and liberation of the human body from the coercion of property; liberation from the shackles and restraint of government. It stands for a social order based on the free grouping of individuals for the purpose of producing real social wealth; an order that will guarantee to every human being free access to the earth and full enjoyment of the necessities of life, according to individual desires, tastes, and inclinations.”

Once upon a time I had a job at a very secure military facility where it required a special permit to even have a camera. Special dispatching and authenticating procedures were used to even gain access to this facility and once inside you had to again authenticate who you were. If any of that failed, you were "jacked up" and escorted off base and held under armed guard until the situation was resolved. The point is, once inside I could take pictures of anything and everything and no one cared what they were for or who got them.

Story time: I was also an escort official which meant I could escort those without security clearances. On one occasion I was escorting two very hot college girls to this place. We got inside and the cop authenticating their ID was dazzled by their appearance. I escorted the hotties to the downstairs element of the facility where two young male officers were on duty where they proudly went through the procedures on how to launch certain weapons. When we got topside all of us were promptly jacked up, under armed guard and escorted off base. The problem was the girls were not properly authenticated by the on duty cop. The cop lost his job. Sorry for the thread drift.

It has been a long time, (20+ years) and I've forgotten what I once knew
about her. I'll have to look her up again. She was an assignment for an
English class.

If nothing else, she had balls.

If you could eliminate the words "Anarchy" and "Emma Goldman" would
you not embrace the descriptive as a preferred manner of existence?

I understand.

You may have taken my thinkin here out of context a bit.
My comment was to "Anarchy" and I had to give credit to the author for
her statement of understanding what it meant to her. In some aspects

The sentiments you quoted had their appeal, but I recognized the name. The devil is in the details...

Now running for Emperor.
LOL... This week we had a BUNCH of people taken offline because somebody sent an e-mail with classified info to a couple of DL's that included a mess of people with no clearance. Desktops, laptops, phones, servers, all confiscated (and flat-out destroyed if the rumors are true). And, all those people got the week off because their accounts were disabled and reset... Soup sandwich.

Glad our mess wasn't as big as the one in the OP. What a lapse.

Ya know, there may come a time when you are forced to make
a possibly life saving but unpleasant decision.

Often times there is no right or wrong it's just what must be done if
only for self preservation. And right or wrong do you know how
you will be remembered?

Probably not cuz you'll likely be dead but for posterity you and your action will
most certainly be cast in a bad light.

I am gonna go look her up again. What you've mention does now bring
back a vague memory or two that although I shared her sentiment, I may
have had misgivings.

Granted, we are all going to die, and most will not know or care why, who, what, when, or where.
i have reasons to believe that the decisions I made 50 years ago (to trust God, drop out of college, and seek a new life as a back-to-the-land homesteader) were correct then and Providential for the circumstances I find myself in now. Even now, I recognize that where I am may only be a way station on the journey to where the Lord is taking me, either on this Earthly plane, or to the next dimension. Either way I am assured of an eternity dwelling with Him, here or there. In God’s Creation, there is no anarchy. It just appears that way to the unbeliever.

I think you misunderstand the true nature of anarchy.
If you live the way Father intended us to live on this planet
You are living anarchy.

Independent of another man's rule, revering only Father,
embracing His Commandments ... true anarchy.

The fourth estate has vilified and demonized all things as
they Relate to Father. Organized religion has done more
to destroy our Relationship with Father than any other aspect
of our existence.

I envy you, your "place" that you occupy, physically and Spiritually.

Well, this isn’t a garden variety screw up…

I propose the SecDef, his staff, and the joint chiefs and their staffs resign in dishonor.

For starters…
