COASTAL HAZARD MESSAGE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DETROIT/PONTIAC MI 412 PM EDT FRI APR 15 2011 ...FLOODING EXPECTED ALONG THE SHORELINE OF WESTERN LAKE ERIE THROUGH SATURDAY... ..STRONG EAST WINDS BLOWING ACROSS THE LENGTH OF LAKE ERIE WILL CONTINUE TO ALLOW WATER TO PILE UP IN THE WESTERN BASIN OF THE LAKE. THE WATER IS EXPECTED TO RISE FURTHER THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF THE DAY...AND SPILL INLAND AS EAST WINDS CONTINUE AT 20 TO 25 MPH.

THIS AFTERNOON...LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS IN MONROE COUNTY REPORTED FLOODING ALONG THE SOUTHERN PORTION OF ESTRAL BEACH...WHICH IS THREATENING HOMES. THE WATER LEVEL...WHICH IS CURRENTLY RUNNING ABOUT 3 FEET ABOVE RECENT WATER LEVELS FOR MOST OF THE LAKE ERIE SHORELINE...IS FORECAST TO GRADUALLY RISE ANOTHER 1 TO 2 FEET LATER THIS EVENING AND TONIGHT.

FURTHER NORTH... WATER LEVELS ACROSS FAR NORTHWEST LAKE ERIE AND NEAR THE MOUTH OF THE DETROIT RIVER ARE EXPECTED TO RISE UP TO ANOTHER FOOT. RISING WATERS WILL CAUSE FLOODING ALONG THE LAKE ERIE SHORELINE...WITH MINOR FLOODING EXPECTED AS FAR NORTH AS THE MOUTH OF THE DETROIT RIVER.

A LAKESHORE FLOOD WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR THE LAKE ERIE SHORELINE IN MONROE COUNTY. A LAKESHORE FLOOD ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FOR THE LAKE ERIE SHORELINE AND MOUTH OF THE DETROIT RIVER IN WAYNE COUNTY. WINDS WILL TURN TO THE SOUTH SATURDAY AFTERNOON...ALLOWING WATER TO FLOW BACK INTO THE LAKE.

I don't know what this has to do with a REAL, RIGHT NOW FLOOD WAVE about to hit MI & OH!!!!!!!!

We are talking about TSUNAMI/STORM SURGE (ie New Orleans/Sendai,JAPAN) potential type death/damage, WHY would you deflect attention to some conspiracy theory junk. THIS IS NOW, THIS IS REAL.

This is not a Tsunami/storm surge type of event. You don't need to hype it to make it worse than what it is. That is just as bad as deflecting with conspiracy theory junk imo. I live almost right on the shore of Lake Superior and events like these are not uncommon when the wind blows right. Yes, there are times where homes are damaged that are built too close to the lake and sometimes even a few of them are innundated. You get lakeshore area flooding and a whole lot of coastline erosion. But these sorts of waves don't come close to the power of a Tsunami or storm surge that is engendered by a hurricane. Those events are much more severe than this is.

A Lakeshore Flood Warning remains in effect until 2 PM EDT Saturday.

* Lakeshore flooding: law enforcement officials reported flooding this afternoon along the southern portion of Estral Beach. This
flooding was threatening homes. Water levels around 4 PM were running close to 3 feet above recent levels. The water is
expected to gradually rise another 1 to 2 feet this evening and tonight as strong east winds continue to push water inland.

* Timing: water will continue to rise this evening and tonight. Water levels will begin to drop tomorrow afternoon as winds turn
south.

* Impacts: water will flood areas near the shoreline... and may impact roads... homes... and businesses.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Lakeshore Flood Warning means that flooding is occurring or imminent along the lake. Residents on or near the shore in the
warned area should be alert for rising water... and take appropriate action to protect life and property."

THis is a reasonably normal occurrence for Lake Erie.

The lake water level can rise as much as 4-8 feet at the Western Basin end with strong east winds.
AND it can rise the same amount at the Buffalo end when the winds are from the west.....


Otherwise we're talking about a 4-6 chop....


Not REALLY an issue until it gets to 6-10 ft. THEN we get interested because if it's a NORTH wind, we have what we refer to as "Flying Fish" on the Shoreway just west of 55th street.

This is at worst a baby to a storm surge and an ant to a tsunami. Hurricans have many days with possibly exetremy heavy winds (2 to times what wee see in our worst wind storms). That Water has strength and time to swell over vast stretches. A tsnaumi can displace water over a large area. You can see video where the tsnaumi keeps pushing in land for 15 minutes.

Sieche just does not have the water Lake area to every get to the destructive power. Its does have the Power to be like a 3 to 5 foot flash flood on the shoreline. Beaches and other low lying areas are at worse risk. Not a good Idea to be on pier, docks, ect. It Just doesnt have the staying power to go inland much.
