Interesting way to start the garlic... basically passive hydroponics. I'd rather use glass or ceramic, though in a survival situation however you can get the job done...

I've only tried growing garlic once, and some critter(s) came and dug it up. Ditto onion bulbs (which were actually chewed on). The bunching onions, oddly enough, are left alone, so that's what I grow, for green onions. Chives and garlic chives are also not bothered here, but I grow those more because I like looking at them (especially when in flower), than the occasional use they get.
