[UNEX] Strange vibrations/rumbles in my locale

We started hearing these deep rumbling noises about dark last night. It was a very irregular sound/vibration with no kind of rythm. At first I thought it was someone out on the highway with one of those eardrum killing sound systems in their cars. But when I went outside, I could barely hear/feel the sound. And the best I could do for locating the direction the sound was coming from was to the Southwest. When I went back inside, the sound was loud enough to be bothersome. We live in a rock house, so that could account for some of the attenuation with the noise we were hearing. I just don't know for sure.

The noise repeated itself at irregular intervals throughout the evening and we finally started ignoring it. It seemed to stop sometime before we went to bed. Then this morning I've noticed that it's back. There are no accompanying noises like crashes or bangs or clangs that would be associated with heavy equipment operation. We have no neighbors with big sound systems and the nearest neighbor is a half mile away anyway. I live in NW Arkansas, near Ft. Smith. Do I have any neighbors here on the board who have heard/felt something similar?

I have to be honest and give you my gut reaction to this noise. At first I thought it was coming from the sky and could possibly have been some kind of aircraft/UFO or whatever. Then I listened more closely and decided that it was coming from underground and considered earth tremors or plate friction or some such. I've never experienced an earthquake so I have nothing to compare it with. Any thoughts with what information I've supplied here? I plan to investigate by driving around here today but I have no idea how to go about finding where this noise is coming from in a moving vehicle. Things that make you say hmmm.......

Your proximity to the New Madrid fault means you should keep an eye open. What are the animals doing there. CHeck the seismos for the area too.

The tunneling must be getting close to you.

I heard it a few years ago. Woke us up in the middle of the night.

Its very strange isn't it?

For the last 2 days (not yet today though) I've heard a rumbling. Almost sounded like a truck going past, but no trucks were around. First time I heard it was at work on Thursday. Last night I made mention of it in chat to oops, and she has pointed me to this thread today. The rumblings I heard had no regular interval either and they lasted longer than it would take a truck to go past, prolly lasting 3-4 minutes.

This should be on the main page! This sounds like earth changes and people should be alerted to it. The more that see it , the more that will respond and maybe a pattern can be found. With all the seismic activity happening everywhere, including AZ I would have it moved or redone on the main page.

I haven't heard it this winter.....yet. But I heard it a couple of times last winter. I have no clue as to what it is.....

Peanut, you reminded me that I left out that part. The length of the rumblings was like you said, about 3 - 4 minutes. And you're right, it sounds very much like a heavily loaded 18-wheeler going down the highway near our house. We live a half mile off the highway but still hear all the road noise very clearly. The strange part is that the sound was totally stationary for the duration. The sound would start off kind of low and then build to a peak and then die back down. Not sound and then no sound. Strange stuff indeed.

Peanut, if you believe this is front page business, feel free to move it or let me know and I'd be glad to post a re-direct from the front page to here (or you can, whatever you think). I figured I blew any credibility when I said I first thought it might be an aircraft or UFO. But that really was my first thought.

We too have been hearing this off and on for about a month. I've read the reports of others hearing this rumbling sound and didn't associate it with that until MTK said it sounded like an 18 wheeler. We have been saying it sounded like a dump truck.

Being winter and the houses closed up it is strange to hear. When we open the door to listen the noise level is still the same. We thought it was something going on here on our ridge, just couldn't figure it out. There is no "feeling" with it like an earthquake.

The other day an elderly woman in town told me about this sound that disturbs her. She has constant pain so she is up a lot at night. She said the sound is like a fast train a long way off yet she gets the feeling it is in the ground and not a long way off.

That covers an area of about 8 miles between her home and mine. Also on the other side of another ridge.

Edit to add the duration is also about 4-5 min then stops then comes again off and on for a couple hours. Sometimes day sometimes night. I think we hear it more at night because it is so still here at night. Not everyday, no real pattern.

The sound is so strange that it is hard to pinpoint the direction. We know it isn't in the air or on the road above us as we have a clear view of anything coming or going this time of the year.

Nothing listed on the seismos....yet, BUT....some of you know that I keep track of the lost and found ads here in Southern Illinois in order to possibly predict New Madrid earthquakes.

The average number of ads is 3. I consider 10 to be high. Well, yesterday it was 12 and today it is 14 .

This is NOT good. :shk:

SOMETHING IS COMING

Methinks that it might be a good idea to move this thread to the main page.

I think we've had similar effects here, too, in the Taconics near the NY/MA border.

The rumble isn't even so much of a sound as a vibration that one would expect to be given by a loud, low bass somethingy. This goes back a few months, I'd say. Withing the past couple weeks, tho, we had a small earthquake here - noticable, like "what was *that*" uhhhh ... "an earthquake???" :shkr:

These hills are pretty old, tho, and always seem to be shifting a bit here and there.

The other weird noise/rumble effect (which, I figure I'll mention just in case ...) was this past summer, it sounded like a huge jet was about to crash into the house. (I was at ground zero, I know first hand what that deafening roar sounds like.) But there was nothing to be seen in the clear sky.

I have moved this to the main page because enough ppl have reported rumbling sounds....as well as the lost and found pets being very high.

On the front page it will get more hits and maybe we can find a pattern or at least a general proximity. I'm thinking ppl who would be affected by the New Madrid are the only ones who will be reporting rumbling....I could be wrong.

Other areas of the world are picking up in earthquake activity (IMO because of the Sumatra quake)...no reason to think it isn't going to vibrate the New Madrid as well.

Call Art Bell on the Coast to Coast program tonight! There will be someone that has heard something similar for sure. ;)

Thanks Peanut. I updated the topic header before it was too late. I'm still hearing those rumblings off and on but they seem to be getting milder. I guess that's a good sign. I don't know for sure. :shr:

we've had similar effects here, too, last week

the porch shook scarred the dog and cat to death
they ran jumped off the porch
turkeys etc.ran everything all at once seemed to jump

I live in CA, and I have both heard and felt the vibration/rumble. I have always checked USGS, and nothing; not even a little one or two on the scale. I have been in EQ's before, and this is a little different feel and sound. Have experienced it about five or six times since we had the the 6'er a while back.

Maybe what I felt and heard was different, but something has been going on and possibly it's just a prelude to something bigger? Or, maybe as someone said it's "tunneling". But, I live on the edge of town so who knows.

Your 18 wheeler comment reminded me of living in LA...I lived right on an intersection (became one after I moved in) and whenever a large enough truck, especially a bigrig, was stopped at the stoplight, it felt like a small eathquake rumble...about a 4.5

Nothing here near the Mississippi River (Illinois-Iowa)
If you're interested in the New Madrid faultline, how about checking your position with all those maps of the expected results....some site listed in Unexplained.

What site listed in unexplained gdpetti? I'd like to see what you're talking about but I couldn't find it in unexplained. If it's no problem please post a link to the post in unexplained and I'll check it out. Thanks.

Did a check on earthquake activity in this area. This was the first time I checked it and I was surprised to find activity right in my backyard ranging from 1874-1957! Must be part of the New Madrid going down to Charleston area.

Among the most interesting events in North Carolina's earthquake history was a series of explosive shocks in the McDowell County area in 1874. There were at least 75 earthquakes between February 10 and April 17.

An October 29, 1915, shock near Marshall awakened many people in that area and at Asheville (intensity V). Two distinct shocks were reported felt at Asheville. On February 21, 1916, the Asheville area was the center for an earthquake classed as one of the largest that has occurred within the borders of North Carolina during historic times.

Significant damage was noted over a small, localized area of southern Mitchell County from a shock on July 8, 1926.

In 1957, two earthquakes, about 6 weeks apart, caused minor damage in separate areas of western North Carolina. The first shock, on May 13, resulted in cracked plaster at Micaville and Nebo (intensity VI). The second shock, on July 2, 1957, caused a few cracked chimneys, cracked walls, and cracked plaster at Asheville, Marshall, Swannanoa, and Weaverville (intensity VI). This earthquake was felt strongly in Buncombe and Madison counties

Just for the record, the Earth, and Mountains trembled here last night. My husband even felt the movement, and he has not previously been able to feel eq movements. It was not subtle, a very strong vibration. North western North Carolina Ashe county. Did any one else experience? I slept like I was comatose, afterwards, no dreams to surface yet.
I will keep you posted to any further events.

Greensboro here, We've had the 'humm' today.
Noticed it for several hours.
Sort of like a low vibrating humm that lasts a couple seconds, but seems to be in a somewhat regular rythm.

The regular rythm leads me to believe it's not a naturally ocurring event, but there is no way of telling where the humm is coming from. It certainly is something new though.

We felt that here, three separate times last summer (far southwestern NY state, down on the Pennysylvania border). Deep, low rumbling, with a vibration that actually made the house vibrate... both my son and I felt/heard it. The dog kept looking around as if trying to see something, but didn't act unduly agitated or upset.

We thought - and in absence of any other explanation- still believe- that it was likely a very heavy aircraft, flying low but just above the clouds. The first time especially, it was intense enough, and lasted long enough, that we wondered if we might be under attack.

It's definitely disconcerting to experience.

Yup summerthyme, we have felt that too. And there is always one of those big guys above circling. I don't think this is what the others are hearing tho. You can hear it when you go outside.

There is a lot of small activity in that area. When my son was at App he called home to tell me about the earthquake. I didn't believe him at the time because nothing shows up on the charts. Sure enough, they are a common occurence and the locals don't evev think about them.

The old timers up there say they get them sometimes 3 or 4 in a month then nothing for a couple months.

Interesting area on the west side of Boone all the way into Tenn. It is all government land. National parks (have UN sign on them in places).

Hey Max ~

I'm in Arkansas to the East of you, and we heard something similar a week ago. It sounded like thunder, but it lasted for several minutes. I haven't heard it since though.

I've posted this a few times before; same topic...

Since moving to our place almost five years ago, every single night I can hear some very low frequency sound/rumble ONLY in the bedroom of our house. Gotten to where I just ignore it now.

I think the reason I hear it in the bedroom is that the room has three outside walls, two of which have lots of windows.

We live within hearing distance of the Interstate and can hear the car/truck "wheel whine"; so I have to think this rumble is some movement transmitted through the ground and for some reason is amplified by my room in the house. It seems to be there every night and does not let up.

So far the sound has not been so bad as to keep me awake or make me be overly concerned; I am curious though.

warren.
PS...my wife does not hear it; but I have better hearing in the very low frequencies (and much less in the higher ranges; actually, I'm considered hard of hearing! Go figure.)

for what its worth,,,,,,

on the rumblings,,,,have had them too, thought a truck went by,, but, step outside, nothing,,,and this is in Indiana,

also the deer are really acting wierd, its either this weather front thats moving through, or its tied to this thread topic, of rumblings of how the animals know somethings up,,,,,,this morning going to work, the deer kept wanting to stay on the road, , I mean you could stop, and walk up on them ,,and, touched one,(only one, the others I could get within 3-4 foot before taking off) to make it get off the road, it was like they were spooked(they ignored the truck lights, and kept looking everywhere else,,), by something, and this was more than just one herd,,,,,,just makes you wonder ya know,,,, :shr:

I agree with the others,,,,,,,

something is coming

I don't post here often, can learn more by reading I figure. But when I read the title to this thread I just had to put in my two cents.

We live in N.E. Ohio, out in the boonies, not close to any highway. This past November and December the "noise " started. At first I thought it was big trucks, then perhaps choppers, maybe Medivacs or Life Flights.

Very low rumblings.........until I saw this thread I did not know that anyone else had been hearing them at all.

After all the "booms" I had heard all summer and fall , then this weird sound starts up.

Not Good Not Good at all.

Max, did your animals act strange?

We are visiting in Tucson, and are enjoying the warm weather. One night last week, one of our dogs was acting very strange. He went outside, walked around the entire fence, acted scared and tried to hide behind a brick wall around the patio. He would not come in when called and had to be brought in by leash (very unusual for him!). He promptly went back out the doggie door to the same place. When he finally came in for the night, he slept by my wife and not in his bed at the end of the bed as usual.

While we were outside with him, we noticed a rumbling sound as well. We are not too far from RR tracks and a big air force base. It sounded like a large number of planes warming up, or a train on the tracks. But it never wavered or stopped. It went on for about 15 minutes while we were outside. We checked again a while later and the sound was still there. It was going on every time we checked that night. I heard it again a few nights ago, but this time the dog was OK. I didn't think too much about it other than it was strange until I saw this thread.

Keep an eye on the animals. I do believe they have a 6th sence about things. If they are acting strange, watch out. Yes, we are living in interesting times!

Please keep posting these interesting events.

No, I didn't notice the animals acting strangely old bear. I have a bunch of free range chickens but they were all on the roost when we were hearing the noises. The dogs never acted out of character either.

I've been thinking about that sound and want to add a few more descriptive comments about it now if it's not too late. I went to Niagara Falls one time and I'll never forget the sound those massive falls make. And I've been to the Ocean and listened to the breakers and I'll never forget that sound either. And I've heard several tornados in my lifetime. That's a sound that would be really hard to forget! Now, if you could combine all of those sounds, that would come pretty close to what this sounded/felt like. And add in the rumbling undertones of a heavy freight train from off in the distance. All that with no rythm. That pretty much describes what we experienced.

I haven't heard any more of those sounds since late yesterday morning. But I'm paying attention and will update this thread if they start back up.

Hmmm-- probably getting ready for a quake where there usually aren't many. Remember reading about the severe quake in Charleston, SC in the 1800's. Y'all are really scaring me.

I know that this could be an indication of future events, but couldn't it be a normal echo reverberating through the earth after the 9+ quake a month ago? I would think it would be some time before the earth settled down especially with all the changes in the sea floor. I'm sure that the planet has undergone these physical changes many times, just not within our recorded memory. We know that islands have been formed through events such as this, and I would think even more subtle incidents' would cause a world-wide effect.

We've had loud rumblings with shakings, as well. One time my son said it sounded like the earth was growling. The fact that so many are experiencing it makes think that is it the earth having growing pains.
