Good start RR. $400 a little pricey but the other one looks almost as good for half that.

Neither here nor there.
We have a foodsaver, it was the largest one we could find at the time probably cost around $329 and we got it on ebay. Check Amazon reviews.

Every year, the Foodsavers are offered at a tremendous discount right around the holidays. Someone usually posts a link on TB. I think when I got mine (through such a notice) I paid like $35, and it was a $150 unit. And you know, I got it when I was getting ready to leave the house in Wisconsin, so I packed it in the RV and have never used it. Actually, I have a buttload of stuff in it, but the thought of dragging it all out and putting it somewhere in the house gives me the chills....

I got a code here at TB several years ago. Entered it in at the Food Saver site and got a stupid great deal for like $25. I still use it a lot. Model V2222.

And they have good deals on the bags as well as a wide variety.

We have the Foodsaver now. I guess we should just stick with the brand. It worked good while it worked.

Thanks everyone.

Scour Craig's List, Goodwill, thrift shops, estate & yard sales before you push the "Buy" button. A lot of people don't know what they have...

I just opened a box of the FoodSaver bags to package up a bunch of rock fish we caught out on the coast and I am not happy with those bags. For some reason the machine would seal some of the bags with evacuating them. I was using the Rival bags before that and they work great and are made from a thicker material.

Foodsaver is good for the plastic bags that are made to be used with it.

However if your not using the bags made for the machine you can run into problems. For my Mylar long term storage bags I have one of these https://www.sorbentsystems.com/sinbosealer.html which is a pretty good unit. It will also do the plastic bags that AREN'T made fore foodsaver as well as foodsaver bags.

The foodsaver website has sales on occasion (for some reason I'm thinking it's around Christmas time?) and I've found the prices to be phenomenal! Two years ago we got their base model, the black countertop one, that's normally around $110, for about $25 apiece. We snapped up three at that price, and are absolutely happy with them. We also have a fancy stainless steel model that sits upright on the counter that's prettier, but no more effective than the basic one.

Here's the one we got (this one is a refurb apparently, but ours aren't):

A while back I found a company that made commercial vacuum machines, they sold a refurb plain bag sealer for $250ish.

While looking for that site, I ran across this one.

http://www.meatprocessingproducts.com/

Very good pricing on bags & supplies. Time to stock up on bags.

At a quick look, their prices seem to be competitive on most things.

I could spend a gobzillion dollars at this place, just to have the equipment to process a coupla deer every year. :)

Had a Rival and it was ok but the canisters to dry pack flour etc. broke a lot. Got a Tillia Foodsaver and used the snot out of it. Then Foodsaver came out with a model which has a fast vacuum and a wet/dry setting and got that. Gave the old Foodsaver to a friend and both are going strong.

Got the battery one ziplock put out thinking of
Off grid back up. Useless as tits on a boar hog.

We bought a Foodsaver last year at Costco and it didn't even last thru the first batch of corn we froze! It would seal for a while then stop sealing. Some of the bags we sealed came unsealed in the freezer. We took it back and are no on the look out for something better. I don't know if the bags were a bad batch but they came with the machine.

I've never been one to use Consumer Reports as an authoritative guide for all things but it came up on a search while I was trying to think of the brand name for ours.

http://www.consumersearch.com/vacuum-food-sealers/countertop-vacuum-food-sealers

That particular page offers contrasting price ranges between the best ($400+) and also rates very good (under $200). Thought it might be of use.

I have a Weston Pro-2300 and if I had to do it again I'd get a Foodsaver, just for the difference in price, and it would probably be easier to use. The Weston does have a wider sealing strip but I've had to order parts for it and it will need another Teflon heat sealing strip again soon. It is also big and bulky and I don't have enough room on the counter for it so I have to keep it in a cabinet and drag it out whenever I need to use it. My machine vibrates and loosens the insides and I've had to take it apart a couple of times to tighten it all down, a real pain to do.

I love my food saver. Been using it 16 years and it's still going strong. And I use it a lot.

If you have trouble with the seal, as someone stated above, you can call Tilia and they'll problem solve it with you over the phone.

Early on I had a couple problems... Called Tilia, we figured it out.... Turned out to be operator error. LOL.

I did have to replace the foam a few years ago, mainly because I cleaned the vaccum canal but closed it before it was dry. They sent me a new one for free.

I like the product and I like the way the company stands behind their product and supports their customers.

Saved, to glorify God.
You guys gotta get out and check the yard sales. Last month I got a like new Foodsaver for $15 at a yard sale. It had jars and Big boxes of bags of a couple different sizes. I have another like new one of a different brand that I haven't even tried yet,
that I got for $5 with a LOT of bags at an earlier sale. I will send you that one free if you PM me your address. You can use it in the interim till you get the one you really want later.
