Two men have been arrested after suspected explosive devices were seized in Dublin's north inner city.

The arrests occurred in the last hour in the Ballybough area of the capital.

Members of the elite Emergency Response Unit are on the scene and an Army Bomb Disposal unit has been requested.

The area has been sealed off.

It is believed that gardaí discovered semtex during a search of a vehicle earlier today.

In a statement gardaí said:

"As part of an on going operation into dissident republican activity Gardaí stopped and searched a vehicle on Spring Garden Street, Ballybough in the inner city at approximately 6pm this evening, Friday June 2, 2017 where two men were arrested.

"The arrested men are being detained at Clontarf Garda Station under the provisions of Section 30, of the Offences against the State Act 1939 as amended.

"The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team are en route to the scene and roads are currently closed. Local diversions are in place.

Two men have been arrested after a quantity of explosive material was discovered by gardaí investigating the activities of dissident republicans.

Heavily-armed officers from the Emergency Response Unit and the Special Detective Unit forced a car to stop on Spring Garden Street in Ballybough at around 6pm this evening.

They discovered what they believe to be a quantity of detonators and semtex.

The surrounding area has been cleared and cordoned off and the army bomb disposal team has been called in to ensure the explosive material is made safe.

The two men are being detained under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act and can be questioned for up to three days.

The scene at Ballybough will remain sealed off until it is declared safe later tonight.

So who was responsible, glad this is confined to Eire.......

On-line sources still just saying "investigations are on-going" and the one source that said the arrests came during an investigation of "Republican" activity so probably native Irish but hard to tell at this point, hopefully, more updates soon; and of course anyone is free to update this thread.

I am glad it seems to be local; we have had some really terrifying (for Ireland) gang violence lately; like people being shot dead in parking lots and that sort of thing that just usually doesn't happen here.

Of course, there has always been some crossover between gang activity and modern day IRA clones (the older IRA is now a political party but we have newbies like The Real IRA or The Provisional IRA etc).

So it was the IRA, what a relief.........OK the Irish really have to sort things out amongst themselves now that the British are not involved.........

Massive New IRA bomb bust as 6kg Semtex haul is seized in city taxi

New IRA bomb plot foiled
Explosives recovered were 'big enough to blow up a street'

A massive New IRA bomb plot was foiled after gardai seized a staggering 6kg (13.2lb) of Semtex in Dublin's north-inner city.

Heavily armed detectives carrying sub-machine guns stopped a seven-seater taxi during a dramatic arrest in Ballybough shortly after 6pm yesterday.

Gardai, aided by the army and the bomb disposal unit, arrested two men and seized the lethal explosives.

In a worrying development, security sources confirmed to the Herald that the Semtex was "brand new" and sourced for the terror group in the last few weeks.

The arrests are part of an ongoing investigation by the Special Detective Unit (SDU) into dissident republican activity.

The Herald can reveal that:

A massive 6kg of Semtex, as well as detonators, were recovered.
The new, military grade explosives were recently sourced and brought into the State.
Two men were arrested at the scene, one with close links to the New IRA.

It has also emerged that the second man arrested has no known connections to any criminal gang, leading to fears of a new recruitment drive by the dissident republican terror group.

Armed gardai also raided the house of a politician's relative, who has close ties to one of the men arrested.

A senior source last night stated that the explosives recovered were "big enough to blow up a street".
Damage

"There were 6 kilos of Semtex recovered, which would have caused serious damage if used. It is a major catch for gardai," said the source.

Gardai have said it is too early to rule out a link to the ongoing Hutch/Kinahan feud.

Dissident republican Michael Barr (35), who was murdered by the Kinahan cartel as part of the ongoing dispute, had links to the New IRA.

Last night, heavily armed gardai from the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) - an elite branch of the SDU - stopped a car at about 6pm.

The dramatic arrests took place near Spring Garden Street, Ballybough, on the capital's northside.

Residents living in the area were immediately evacuated from their homes, while a takeaway was also closed.

Two men, aged in their 20s and originally from the north-inner city, were detained. They had been placed under surveillance by specially trained detectives ahead of the interception.

They are being detained at Clontarf Garda Station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

The Defence Force's bomb disposal unit arrived at the scene shortly before 7pm under a garda escort, with a large section of the area closed off yesterday evening.

Members of the Dublin Armed Support Unit and army personnel, carrying sub-machine guns, stood guard as locals, including young children, looked on.

Semtex is an all-purpose plastic explosive, which is used in commercial blasting, demolition and by terrorists.

Just 250g of Semtex could destroy a commercial passenger airplane, as sadly proven in the case of the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing over Lockerbie in 1988.

The Omagh bomb of 1998 was a 500lb fertiliser bomb with a 500g (1lb) Semtex trigger.

Six kilos of TNT discovered in Dublin 'could have made 30 bombs'

Question for Housecarl and other military types - is is possible the IRA was planning on selling some of this stuff to the Jihadi's - I mean you would think they are born enemies in one way - but I know that really nasty terror people have crossed lines in the past when it meant money; I find this van heading towards either the North, Gangs in Dubiln (or possibly the ferry port) 48 hours before the London attack in a similar taxi-van (which have only recently started showing up in Ireland) to be a bit "interesting" or maybe I'm just turning paranoid?

The cache of TNT explosive seized in Dublin by gardai last Friday was large enough to demolish houses and kill and maim dozens of people.

All the houses in Spring Garden Street, in north inner Dublin, and adjoining areas had to be cleared at teatime so the Army's Ordnance Corps could make the explosives safe to move.

Officially, gardai said the explosives were found as a result of investigations into "dissident republican" activity but sources said that one figure linked to the seizure has well-known links to both the Provisional IRA and Sinn Fein and organised criminals in the north inner city.

There are fears the explosive was being brought into north inner Dublin possibly to be used in attacks on the Kinahan crime gang, which has murdered a dozen men *associated with its rivals linked to the northside gang leader Gerry Hutch, who has been in exile since last year.

Analysis carried out yesterday confirmed that the explosives were TNT (trinitrotoluene) and not Semtex as originally thought.

Two men, aged 21 and 28, were arrested under Section 31 of the Offences Against the State Act. Their detention periods were extended last night. A third man (55) was arrested in a follow-up search on Friday night and remains in custody.

The explosive yield of TNT is still considered to be the standard measure of bombs and other explosives. TNT is one of the most commonly used explosives for military, industrial, and mining applications and is relatively stable.

In June last year, Dublin's main Busaras bus station had to be evacuated after dissident republican Thomas Brennan was caught on board a service to Derry with 1.6kg of TNT and three detonators.

During evidence at a subsequent court hearing, an expert suggested that the 1.6kg of TNT was enough to create "six to eight separate car bombs", putting into context the potentially devastating impact of last Friday's 6kg haul of the same explosive. Using the expert's figures, the latest TNT seizure could have been used to create around 30 car bombs.

As a result of the seizure at Busaras in June 2016, Patrick Brennan, of Lindisfarne Avenue, Clondalkin, Co Dublin, was jailed for seven years by the Special Criminal Court earlier this year.

The court heard Busaras had to be evacuated after gardai intercepted Brennan on board the bus at the Dublin station on June 16, 2016.

Brennan (53) was arrested by officers from the Special Detective Unit (SDU) at Busaras following a tip-off.

He pleaded guilty in January to possessing four 400g blocks of TNT and three electric explosive detonators on the date in question and was jailed the following month.

Det Sgt Padraig Boyce, of the SDU, told the court on February 5 that Brennan had been under surveillance "as part of an ongoing investigation" into the activities of IRA members in the Dublin area.

The latest seizure of such a large amount of TNT is deeply worrying. A possible link between last Friday's explosives find and gangland feuds would represent a considerable escalation, though senior detectives remain cautious.

Until now all the assassinations carried out by Dublin gangs have involved firearms. Military grenades supplied by the Provisional IRA were used in a previous feud
Unin the north inner city but caused no casualties.

When you get into such murky corners as those where "the enemy of my enemy" becomes a big part of the thinking process just about anything is possible. That such "movements" are decentralized and cross connected with other activities only makes such a possibility all the more possible.
