US denies agreement with Turkey on withdrawing YPG from Manbij (yet again)
https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/us-denies-agreement-with-turkey-on-withdrawing-ypg-from-manbij/ (fair use)
By Leith Aboufadel - 28/04/2018

BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:10 P.M.) – The Spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, Heather Nauert, stated on Friday that her country had no agreement with Turkey regarding the alleged withdrawal of the Kurdish-led YPG forces from the northeast Aleppo town of Manbij.

“The Secretary and Foreign Minister agreed on the value of U.S.-Turkish partnership in the region and of maintaining close communication. Secretary Pompeo conveyed the Administration’s concern for U.S citizens and Mission Turkey local staff detained in Turkey. Building upon prior discussions on Manbij, the two reaffirmed their support for the established bilateral process to find a common way forward,” Nauert stated.
Nauert’s statement contrasted that of the Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, who told reporters on Friday that he and his U.S. counterpart, Mike Pompeo, had an agreement regarding the eventual withdrawal of YPG forces from Manbij.

“The YPG will be withdrawing from Manbij. Otherwise, we will intervene as we did with Afrin,” the Turkish Foreign Minister stated on Friday.

Manbij has been under the control of the YPG since 2016 when their forces expelled the Islamic State (ISIS) from the town.

Kurdish-led forces in Syria release dozens of IS members in Raqqa

(giving comfort to the enemy)

RAQQA (Kurdistan 24) - The US-backed forces fighting the Islamic State (IS) in northern and eastern Syria on Saturday revealed they had released dozens of alleged IS member in what it said was a gesture of goodwill designed to promote stability in the region.

“One hundred and eight low-ranking fighters have been pardoned as they do not have blood on their hands,” the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), of which the Kurdish YPG is a leading element, declared in an online statement.

The prisoners were released in the Syrian town of Tal Abyad on the Turkish border in response to the request by tribal leaders in Raqqa province, the SDF statement read.

The pardoned fighters were low-ranking members and were not involved in the violence, nor did they commit any heinous crimes, the SDF statement continued.

One by one, they stepped down from buses and gathered in a square in Tal Abyad where tribal leaders and SDF officials delivered speeches.

“Many tried to create sedition over the issue of these prisoners, but we tried hard to prevent it. We negotiated with the competent authorities to expedite investigations and release those whose hands were not stained with blood,” Hamad Shahada, a prominent tribal leader, said in a speech delivered at the amnesty ceremony.

Applause from all sides followed the speeches.

The men walked past SDF officials and Raqqa civilian Council (RCC) members who shook their hands before tasting freedom and reuniting with their families.

Sweets were handed out on trays in what officials hoped would be the start of a new chapter in the men’s lives.

The pardons may be one small step towards easing tensions that run deep in Raqqa after three years of ruthless Islamic State occupation followed by a war.

On October 17, the SDF declared full victory over the jihadist group and the liberation of Raqqa, the de facto capital of the self-proclaimed caliphate.

The group took over large swathes of territory across Syria and Iraq in mid-2014. For three years, they committed atrocities against people living under their rule, notably the Yezidi (Ezidi) minority against which they committed genocide, killing thousands of men, and kidnapping and enslaving thousands of women and children.

French troops patrol alongside US soldiers in Manbij

French soldiers were photographed in Syria's Manbij, which is under the control of the PKK's Syrian affiliate People's Protection Units (YPG), while patrolling alongside U.S. troops with military vehicles that were carrying French flags, news reports have said.

According to a senior terrorist from the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a group dominated by the YPG, 50 French soldiers arrived in Manbij a short while ago and are now building a military base in the northern part of the province.

"French soldiers have increased their presence in northern Manbij to prevent the Turkish Military and the Free Syrian Army [FSA] from launching an operation," the senior terrorist was quoted by the Sputnik news service as saying, while adding that although the French soldiers are generally placed on the border, they are active in various parts of the province.

The general commander of the Manbij Military Council, Abu Adeel, also confirmed to Sputnik that French soldiers are patrolling in Manbij alongside U.S. soldiers.

It has been reported that there are approximately 250 French soldiers in regions that are under the control of the SDF in northern Syria, including Kobane, Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor. There is also a center that belongs to French soldiers in Kobane.
Last month, a French presidency statement said French President Emmanuel Macron hopes "a dialogue can be established between the SDF and Turkey with help from France and the international community."

Following the statement, leaders of the terrorist group told Reuters that France promised to send troops to northern Syria's Manbij to support the SDF after Thursday's meeting. In relation to France's attitude toward the YPG, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan warned the country of abetting terrorism.

Anadolu Agency (AA) reported previously that French soldiers were spotted in at least five YPG-occupied areas. More than 100 French special forces were seen in the towns of Sarrin and Ayn Issa, as well as the strategic Mishtanur Hill and at the U.S. air base in the Harab-Isk village of Kobane.

French and U.S. troops in the region are reportedly carrying out field operations with YPG terrorists.

Manbij was captured from the Daesh in 2016 by SDF forces. Since then, the province has been one of the most hotly debated points of contention between Ankara and Washington. Turkey and the U.S. established working groups to discuss a number of issues, including the stabilization of Manbij and preventing any undesirable clashes.
Ankara's demand for the U.S. to cease arming the YPG and ensure its withdrawal to east of the Euphrates dates back to former President Barack Obama's time in office. The U.S. had promised to meet Ankara's demands, but has not so far, which has strained relations between the two countries.

Gee, considering the Turks and their allies are still engaged in Afrin, after "conquering" it last month, I'm wondering when Erdogan will get around to engaging the Kurdish, French and American troops in Manjbi?

Further, Assad Junior is moving serious, serious military troops and stuff up to the areas where the Turks and their allies are. Assad Junior is pushing north of Aleppo, northeast towards Afrin, and east and south as well. It will only be a matter of time till Assad Juniors forces get into it with the Turkish forces now moving south towards Aleppo and Idjib? county. Of course, the Russians are all over the place to the north and west of Aleppo.

Yep, all the balls are in the air now in Syria.

Turkish cargo vessel ‘rams’ Greek warship in Aegean Sea

A Turkish cargo vessel has come into close contact and nudged a Greek gunboat that was on patrol for unauthorized migrant crossings in the Aegean Sea.
The Greek navy said their 180-foot (55-meter) Armatolos gunboat was on patrol off the island of Lesbos, as part of a NATO operation, when a Turkish-flagged vessel “approached and touched” their boat at about 4am local time, reports Reuters.

Afterward, the Turkish vessel accelerated towards Turkish shores and did not respond to radio calls from the Greek gunboat, according to the statement from the Hellenic Navy.
No injuries or serious damage to the boat was caused but NATO authorities have been informed of the hostile incident. Turkey’s transport ministry also confirmed that there were no casualties on their side of the collision, according to Reuters.
The incident comes less than three months since a Greek coast guard ship was damaged by a Turkish vessel, after it rammed one of their patrol boats near a disputed territory in the Aegean Sea. The collision took place off the islets of Imia, a disputed region which brought Greece and Turkey to the brink of war 22 years ago.

The Greek island of Lesbos was inundated with hundreds of thousands of migrants in 2015.

The influx has eased considerably, following an agreement between the European Union and Turkey to allow migrants to be sent back. However, Lesbos remains one of many Greek islands that continues to host about 15,000 migrants.

On Thursday, demonstrators on the island clashed with police during a protest against the agreement, which still allows for some 500 new migrants to arrive each week. Alexis Tsipras’s government promised to solve the migration problem and move asylum seekers to the mainland, but that seems to be taking more time than expected, due to a lack of staff and sites that could host the refugees around Greece.

Greek, Turkish hackers trade retaliatory cyberattacks amid worsened relations

http://www.dw.com/en/greek-turkish-...berattacks-amid-worsened-relations/a-43672264 (fair use)

The Greek Foreign Ministry's reaction on Thursday appeared almost routine: "Cyberattacks are being neutralized immediately by the responsible authorities. At no time has the Ministry's website been disabled," the terse message said. What had happened?

The day before, the Turkish hacker group Akincilar ("Invaders") had targeted the foreign ministry's website, as well as publishing a video documenting their action. Previously, ANA, the Greek news agency's website had been hacked. The Athens journalists' union ESIEA strongly condemned the cyberattack and also declared its solidarity with Turkish journalists fighting for press freedom in the neighboring country.
The Turkish hackers said on the television station Skai that the cyberattacks were a response to Athens' refusal to hand over the Turkish officers who fled to Greece in July 2016. The officers had fled their country in the wake of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's crackdowns on numerous sectors of society and government following an attempted coup.

"We are working against forces that threaten our national unity. The attacks will continue as long as Greece maintains its current position," said a member of the hacker group.

In Athens, rumors abound about the perpetrators' identity. "I don't think they're ordinary citizens, but agents of the Turkish state. That is quite clear," says Angelos Syrigos, political scientist and former secretary general of the Interior Ministry.
Athens wary of further attacks

According to Jorgos Tzogopoulos, lecturer on international relations at the University of Thrace, there is still no evidence that there are actually organized structures behind the latest hacker attacks. Nevertheless, he says that the Greek government would be well advised to increase its alertness on the issue of cybersecurity.

"This issue is a priority both in the EU and in the US, if only because of Russia's increasing online activities, " Tzogopoulos told DW. But he also said that Greece is unfortunately still lagging behind in this area.

IT security consultant Kostas Vavoussis shares this view. "We know Turkey has a strong cyber army. Greece should finally start investing in its own cybersecurity," he told TV station, Antenna. Politicians have so far refrained from commenting. Experts fear the cyberattacks look set to continue. In any case, according to Tzogopoulos, such incidents are symptomatic of a significant deterioration in relations between Greece and Turkey.
Greek hackers retaliate

On Thursday, a prompt counterattack was alleged to have taken place. Greek hackers from Anonymous attacked Turk Telekom servers and paralyzed the channel 24TV Live website for several hours. The Greek hackers said that the attacks would continue as the upcoming Turkish elections approach.

Turkish Navy Ship Sails Through Corinth Canal

http://greece.greekreporter.com/201...hip-sails-through-corinth-canal-photos-video/ (fair use)
By Tasos Kokkinidis - Apr 16, 2018

The Turkish navy minesweeper “Anamur” sailed through the Corinth canal on Sunday.

Although this is not the first time that a Turkish ship used the canal, local site Korinthostv.gr reports that Anamur crossed without having raised the NATO flag.

The vessel came from the Aegean side of the canal in a westward direction.

The canal connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea. It cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and separates the Peloponnese from the Greek mainland.

It is 6.4 kilometres (4 miles) in length and only 21.4 metres (70 ft) wide at its base, making it impassable for most modern ships.

In February it shut down for about 15 days after heavy rainfall caused a mass landslide.

Turkey says it will retaliate if US halts F-35 fighter jet sales

http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/tu...ate-if-us-halts-f-35-fighter-jet-sales-131366 (fair use)

May 06 2018 11:04:00 ANKARA - Reuters

Turkey has said it will retaliate if the U.S. halts sales of new generation F-35 fighter jets in reaction to the Turkish government’s purchase of S-400 anti-ballistic missile systems from Russia.

“It’s not right for them to speak with us in a threatening way. If they take such a step at a moment when we are trying to mend our bilateral ties, they will sure get a response from Turkey. There no longer is the old Turkey,” Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu told the private broadcaster CNN Türk in an interview on May 6.

“We told the U.S. about our response. I told this to the U.S. secretary of state [Mike Pompeo] in our meeting in Brussels,” Çavuşoğlu said.

The Turkish foreign minister’s statement came in response to a question about recent moves at the U.S. Congress that called on the U.S. government to sanction Turkey because of its growing ties with Russia particularly after its procurement of the S-400 air defense system.

“They should not question our good ties with Russia. The West should abandon this understanding. Countries in this geography have to pursue a balanced policy. Our NATO membership is not an obstacle for us to establish good ties with other countries. No one can argue that Turkey is seeking an alternative to its NATO membership,” he said.
The U.S. has to understand that it can no longer impose its own policies on other countries in the world and cannot sanction countries unilaterally, Çavuşoğlu stressed.

“There is the U.N. and other international organizations. All countries have to abide with resolutions taken by these organizations. But I am not obliged to approve decisions taken by an individual country. Therefore, U.S.’s attempt to impose sanctions on us is illogical and wrong. I would retaliate [in this case],” he said.
“What will happen then?” he said. “If the U.S. imposes sanctions or takes a step in this direction, Turkey will absolutely respond to this. But this is not something we wish. Why should it happen? Thus, the U.S. should give up this approach.”

Turkey needs to protect its citizens and defend its airspace but the U.S. hesitated to sell its Patriot systems, Çavuşoğlu recalled, underlining that threatening Turkey with sanctions was not befitting an ally.

S-400s will be under Turkey’s control

One of the most important concerns voiced in NATO about the Turkish deployment of a non-NATO system on its soils is that it would create an important loophole on the allied joint collective defense.

Reiterating that the S-400s will not be integrated with the NATO radars and systems, Çavuşoğlu stated that the sophisticated air defense systems will be controlled by the Turkish military and will not in anyway target NATO members as the enemy.

“We are already very sensitive on this. Not any defense system, not any weapon I procure or produce in Turkey can and will identify NATO members as the enemy,” he said.

FM to meet Pompeo in May

Çavuşoğlu and Pompeo held their first meeting on the margins of a NATO summit in Brussels in late April with an agreement to come together immediately in Washington D.C. The minister said he will either visit Washington D.C. before May 11 or after May 15 as he will accompany President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on a visit to London between these days.

US, Turkey in talks over Turkish military operation in Manbij: FSA commander
https://www.almasdarnews.com/articl...h-military-operation-in-manbij-fsa-commander/ (fair use)
By News Desk - 07/05/2018

Ahmed Osman, commander of the Sultan Murad Brigade, part of the Free Syrian Army rebel militia taking part in the Turkish-led military operation in northern Syria, has confirmed to Sputnik that Turkish and US officials are in intense negotiations over the fate of the northern Syrian city of Manbij.

According to the commander, his forces are preparing for a possible offensive in the area. “We want to take Manbij without military action, on the basis of an agreement, but if an agreement is not reached, Turkey and the FSA will conduct a military operation,” he said.
“We are ready for such a scenario. In the event of a military operation, Manbij will be taken significantly faster than Afrin, since it has a smaller civilian population and fewer Kurdish YPG militia formations. The only difficulty and problem with Manbij is the presence of the US military there,” Osman added.

Ebu Adil, commander-in-chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces’ Manbij military council, confirmed that negotiations were underway, but added that no agreement has been reached.
“At the moment, no agreement between the US and Turkey on Manbij has been reached. If it was, the US military would not be increasing its presence in the region,” the SDF commander said.

“We regularly negotiate with US military representatives. They are saying that they do not intend to leave Manbij. For our part, we, as the representatives of Manbij’s people, also have no plans to retreat. We will defend our city if it is attacked,” Adil added.

On Sunday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed that Turkey’s armed forces would “not give up on constricting terrorist organizations” in northern Syria, warning that the military was “ready for new missions.”
Earlier, a SDF source presented Sputnik with evidence of a growing French military presence in Manbij. Last month, the SDF said that the US military had promised the Kurds that they would retaliate if anyone attacked the city.

Turkey launched Operation Olive Branch against SDF-controlled areas in northern Syria in January 2018, and classes the Syrian Kurdish militia as terrorists. The US does not agree with this assessment.

Damascus has condemned both the Turkish and US military operations in the country, calling the deployments an illegal violation of Syria’s territorial integrity.

Greek phantom pilot tells Turkish airforce “I’m the carrier of death and I’m coming”
https://greekcitytimes.com/2018/05/...rforce-im-the-carrier-of-death-and-im-coming/ (fair use)
14 HOURS AGO by GCT TEAM

A Greek F-4 Phantom pilot participating in a routine exercise in Samos, was asked to move away by the Turkish Air force, as they claimed the Greek fighter jet was “flying over Turkish airspace.”

When the Turkish operators asked the Greek fighter aircraft to identify themselves, the Greek pilot responded, “I am Charon (carrier of the souls of death in Greek mythology) and I am coming.”

In most cases Greek pilots ignore these calls, however this fighter pilot felt the need to express his frustration at the constant and unreasonable claims made by Turkey, and following the death of his colleague Giorgos Baltadoros, who passed away after his plane intercepted a Turkish jet in April in the Aegean.

Erdogan is in the final phases of his Ottoman Imperial Restoration plan.

One: he has now permanently seized a large chunk of what used to be Northern Syria.

Two: he is moving south towards Aleppo and eventual combat with Assad Junior.

Three: he is abusing his fellow NATO member, Greece and threatening to invade them, and thus permanently shatter the NATO alliance.

Four: he has said multiple times he wants to "liberate Jerusalem."

Five: he has called for the creation of a 5 million strong "liberation army to seize Jerusalem.

Six: he has recalled his diplomats from Israel in protest of the HAMAS led border invasion resulting in "Innocents," being shot by Israel.

Seven: he has called a diplomatic meeting to set up the conditions for the creation of his 5 million strong army, sanction his invasion of Israel to seize Jerusalem, and crown him top dog, ie the new Sultan of the new Ottoman Empire.

Yep, Erdogan is now moving the final pieces into place to support his invasion of Greece, and Israel, his seizure of Jerusalem and his installation as the new Sultan.

Game on. CHECK

Hamas is not a terrorist group: President Erdoğan

http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/hamas-is-not-a-terrorist-group-president-erdogan-131933 (fair use)
May 17 2018 03:30:00 Vahap Munyar - LONDON

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said he does not deem Hamas, the Palestinian militant group that has been ruling the Gaza Strip, as a terrorist organization, repeating his comments from a Twitter spat with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“Our support to the resistance of the Palestinians upsets them. But in this context I do not deem Hamas a terrorist organization. Hamas is one of the resistance movements working to liberate the occupied territories of the Palestinians,” Erdoğan said during his official visit to London on May 16.

“My reply to Netanyahu’s tweet must have got on their nerves,” he added.

The trading of barbs followed the Israeli military’s killing of at least 60 Palestinians protesting the opening of the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem on May 14-15.

“Erdogan is among Hamas’s biggest supporters and there is no doubt that he well understands terrorism and slaughter. I suggest that he not preach morality to us,” the official Twitter account of the prime minister of Israel wrote on May 15.
Erdoğan’s Twitter account replied in two posts.

“Netanyahu is the PM of an apartheid state that has occupied a defenseless people’s lands for 60+ yrs in violation of UN resolutions. He has the blood of Palestinians on his hands and can’t cover up crimes by attacking Turkey. Want a lesson in humanity? Read the 10 commandments,” it said.

“Reminder to Netanyahu: Hamas is not a terrorist organization and Palestinians are not terrorists. It is a resistance movement that defends the Palestinian homeland against an occupying power. The world stands in solidarity with the people of Palestine against their oppressors,” it went on.

Turkey aims for ‘common attitude’

When asked about claims that Israel could be expelled from the United Nations, Erdoğan was cautious.

“We should not talk so assertively. The important point is to adopt a common attitude against Israel’s unjust and unfair acts,” he said.
“But it is hard to say that the international community, including even the Arab League and the Islamic world, has taken a common attitude at the desired level in this respect. We are one of the few countries raising its voice loudly against these wrongful acts. Statements from Iran and Russia are also important,” Erdoğan added.

He stated that Turkey has launched multiple diplomatic efforts against the “situation of shame” in Palestine.

The Turkish government declared a three-day national mourning and recalled its ambassadors from Tel Aviv and Washington for consultations, while the Israeli ambassador to Ankara and the Israeli consul general were told to leave the country temporarily.

Erdoğan also initiated phone diplomacy with leaders of Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member countries, inviting them to an extraordinary meeting of the organization on May 18.

Over the course of the night of May 14 and 15, the Turkish Red Crescent in Gaza and Jerusalem locally obtained emergency medical equipment worth $100,000 and successfully delivered it to hospitals and the Palestinian Red Crescent.

The “Israel”-Hellenic Alliance That May Push Turkey to Cut Ties With Tel Aviv

https://www.eurasiafuture.com/2018/...at-may-push-turkey-to-cut-ties-with-tel-aviv/ (fair use)
Written by Adam Garrie on 2018-05-15

The Turkish government has just announced the effective expulsion of Eitan Na’eh, “Israel’s” Ambassador to Ankara. According to the Daily Sabah,

“Na’eh was asked to leave Turkey indefinitely by the Turkish ministry of foreign affairs following the Israeli bloodshed and his tweets”.

The move comes as Erdogan has openly challenged other nations that have formal relations with the occupier entity to question whether such relations are beneficial to the Muslim world. The clear targets of Erdogan’s challenge are President Sisi’s Egypt – Turkey’s hated East Mediterranean rival, a waffling Jordanian monarchy and Turkey’s pro-FETO (Gulenist) Albanian nemesis in the western Balkans.
From healthy relations to the ultimate strain

Of course, Turkey was the first Muslim majority nation to recognise “Israel” and prior to recent decades, Ankara and Tel Aviv have had a generally healthy relationship. This dramatically changed in 2010 when “Israeli” commandos illegally boarded the MV Mavi Marmara in international waters. The MV Mavi Marmara was a privately chartered Turkish flagged ship carrying mostly Turkish activists on their way to Gaza in order to deliver much needed humanitarian supplies to besieged Palestinians. The gruesome raid killed ten Turks and resulted in the lowest ebb in Ankara-Tel Aviv relations until now.

Pipeline politics no more

The incident resulted in the expulsion of Tel Aviv’s ambassador to Ankara and a formal downgrading in relations. In 2016, the two sides reconciled, primarily out of pragmatic motives. At the time, both “Israel” and Turkey hoped to jointly participate in a pipeline that would transport gas from northern Iraq through Turkey and into “Israel”.
However, since then, the plans for such Turkey to “Israel” East Mediterranean pipeline have stalled. Instead, Tel Aviv has pivoted closer to Turkey’s regional rival Egypt (which has said next to nothing about Palestine in recent days), while most importantly there is now talk of an EU sponsored East Mediterranean pipeline between “Israel”, Cyprus, Greece and Italy.

According to the pro-Brussels New Europe,

“The EastMed gas pipeline would circumvent Turkey, which has increased tensions with Cyprus, Greece and Israel recently, providing a way to transport newly discovered gas supplies from the East Mediterranean to Europe. The talks in Nicosia in May follow a memorandum of understanding regarding the EastMed pipeline, which was signed in December.

According to the Public Gas Corporation of Greece (DEPA), the EastMed will connect the recently discovered gas fields in the Levantine Basin, in the southeast Mediterranean, with mainland Greece and is projected to carry 8-14 billion cubic meters per year of natural gas to Greece and Europe.
According to DEPA, the approximately 1900 kilometer long pipeline (700 kilometers on-shore, 1200 off-shore) consists of the three following main sections, as well as compressor stations located in Cyprus and Crete: a pipeline from the fields to Cyprus, a pipeline connecting Cyprus to Crete, and a pipeline from Crete crossing mainland Greece up to the Ionian coast.

From there the EastMed can link up with the offshore Poseidon pipeline enabling the delivery of additional diversified sources from the Levantine to Italy and beyond. The EastMed pipeline is preliminarily designed to have exit points in Cyprus, Crete, and mainland Greece as well as the connection point with the Poseidon pipeline”.
The deal to create such a pipeline was sealed in December of 2017 while glowing reports from pro-EU media touted the deal as a means of allowing Europe to decrease its dependence on Russian gas while also offering “Israel” a chance to swap Turkey for EU partners. As Turkey’s long paralytic bid to join the EU is now de-facto over, both Europe and “Israel’s” cooperation over a new East Mediterranean gas pipeline has the effect of drawing Russia and Turkey into an even closer partnership than the one they are currently in.

At the moment the Turkstream pipeline designed to bring Russian gas into Europe via Turkey is a major joint project between Moscow and Ankara. Now, both the EU and “Israel” are looking to challenge this route with a pipeline of their own in a similar region. In reality, there is enough demand for gas in Europe and “Israel” to mean that both pipelines can coexist, but the geopolitical optics are clear enough. Tel Aviv has joined forces with the most anti-Ankara states in the EU in order to cut Turkey out of “Israel’s” future.
The importance of Turkey’s Soft Power in the Sunni Muslim world

President Erdogan has already proved himself to be the ‘Sultan of Soft Power’ in the wider Sunni Muslim world. Without clear leadership from Egypt, Saudi Arabia or Qatar and with Saddam’s always controversial Iraqi government long out of power, Erdogan has positioned himself as a champion for Palestine not only in Turkey and the Sunni Arab world but beyond. Because of this, one should never underestimate how far Turkey will take its support of Palestine vis-a-vis Tel Aviv, not least because the more Erdogan voices his opinions in support of Palestine, the more he is respected and supported both in Turkey and far beyond.

“Israel” supporting Turkey’s main rivals

Because “Israel” has taken clear moves away from Turkey and towards its hated Hellenic rivals, officials in Ankara who in the past may have been hesitant to sever ties with Tel Aviv because of economic considerations may now be much closer to doing so. “Israel’s” intensifying military cooperation with both Greece and Cyprus are a further sign that when it comes to Turkey, Tel Aviv is doing everything in its power to replace its once healthy Turkish partnership with that of countries with notoriously poor and always heated relations with Ankara.

Then there is the issue of Kurdish ethno-nationalism in both Syria and Iraq. Uniquely in the world, the United States and “Israel” are supporters of Kurdish separatism both in northern Syria and northern Iraq. President Erdogan has already made it clear that this is one of several red lines that “Israel” can cross in respect of maintaining even semi-normal relations. During the attempted illegal Kurdish succession from Iraq in the autumn of 2017, Erdogan posed the following rhetorical statements to Kurdish secessionists in Iraq,
“Who will recognize your independence? Israel. The world is not about Israel?…

…“You should know that the waving of Israeli flags there will not save you!”

Traditional Anti-Turkish lobbies in the US team up with the American Jewish lobby

Finally, it is not only in the Middle East and Mediterranean where “Israel” has taken up common positions with Turkey’s adversaries. In the United States, the powerful Jewish lobby has joined forces with the comparatively smaller but still influential US based Hellenic and Armenian lobbies to protest the sale of US made F-35 jets to Ankara. While the move ultimately failed, it demonstrated that unlike in the past where the US Jewish lobby did not try to antagonise Turkey, in 2018, it is willing to team up with lobbies whose primary objective is to promote grievances against Turkey.
Against this background, it is perhaps not surprising that Gilad Erdan, a member of Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud faction has called for Tel Aviv to recognise the events of 1915 as an “Armenian Genocide”. If “Israel” were to officially to do this, it would represent a clear break between Tel Aviv and Ankara and quite possibly a point of no return. The more Turkey stands up for Palestine, the more voices like those of Erdan will become amplified in arguing for a move that is less about Armenia (a traditionally anti-Zionist nation) than about sending a clear message to Turkey that the partnership has run its course.

Conclusion

The economic realities that have held Turkey and “Israel” together against great odds during the Erdogan/Netanyahu years, are rapidly unravelling. As Tel Aviv pivots its energy and commercial needs towards Greece, Cyprus, Egypt and Italy and with “Israel” engaging in ever closer security cooperation with the Hellenic members of the EU, all the while supporting Kurdish ethno-nationalism in the Middle East, it is becoming apparent that the once unthinkable question of a long term schism between Ankara and Tel Aviv may now be inevitable.

SDF arrests pro-Turkish ‘sleeper cells’ in Manbij: official
http://www.rudaw.net/english/middleeast/syria/24052018 (fair use)
By Karwan Faidhi Dri 8 hours ago

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Manbij Military Council (MMC) told Rudaw English on Thursday that its forces have captured a number of pro-Turkish “sleeper cells” who allegedly belong to Operation Euphrates Shield. They are accused of trying to “destabilize” the area.

“The Euphrates Shield forces wanted to secretly form a network in Manbij city. We are investigating it. We have also arrested some who have connections with Euphrates Shield. They want to destabilize the situation for civilians,” Mohammed Abu Adel, commander of MMC, told Rudaw English.

MMC is affiliated with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which is predominantly controlled by the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG). MMC and SDF are supported by the US-led coalition against ISIS. US troops operate a base in the city.

The council published a statement on Wednesday saying it suspects Turkey was behind an IED blast on March 29. The Kurdish commander said there were no casualties. On the same day, a separate IED, thought to have been planted by ISIS, killed two coalition soldiers and wounded at least four SDF fighters.

“The aim of the people involved is to … give the false impression of instability among the local population of Manbij,” the statement read.

Turkey has threatened to expand Operation Olive Branch from Afrin to Manbij to clear the YPG from its borders. Ankara considers the YPG a terrorist organization, fostering ties with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) – a link the two groups deny. Such an action could bring Turkish and US forces into direct confrontation. A Turkish military assault has not materialized.

“Instead, Turkey sends groups to the city secretly, carries out explosions, and attaches explosives to vehicles,” Abu Adel claims.

He admitted part of the Manbij population is Turkish-affiliated and another part affiliated to radical groups, “but 70 percent of people are with the Manbij council.”

The commander said the council has bolstered it forces in Manbij and coalition operations against ISIS are ongoing.

Turkey may buy Russian fighter jets if US freezes F-35s, says newspaper
http://www.ekathimerini.com/229070/...ghter-jets-if-us-freezes-f-35s-says-newspaper (fair use)

Turkey may buy Russian Su-57 fighter jets if the United States decide to suspend the delivery of F-35 jets to the country, in response to the purchase of Russian S-400 anti-missile systems, Turkish newspaper Yeni Safak reported Sunday.

A US Senate committee passed earlier this week a defense policy bill that includes a measure to prevent Turkey from purchasing the F-35s, citing the country’s detention of US citizen Andrew Brunson and its agreement with Russia to buy its weapons systems in December.

The US draft legislation has irked the Turkish government, which has repeatedly stated that it is prepared to consider widening its cooperation with Russia without being restricted by its relations with the West.

The Sukhoi Su-57 is a stealth, single-seat, fifth-generation jet fighter currently being tested. The first test flight was held in 2010 and the new model is expected to enter service in 2019.

Turkey, Russia ink pipeline agreement, end gas dispute

Ankara and Moscow reached a retroactive agreement for a 10.25 percent discount on the natural gas and a payment of $1 billion will be made to Turkey, while the two sides also came to an agreement to complete TurkStream's second line to Europe by 2019
Turkey and Russia have reached a retroactive agreement for a 10.25 percent discount on the natural gas Ankara buys from Moscow, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Berat Albayrak said Saturday. The two sides also signed a protocol to jointly end the second line of the TurkStream gas pipeline project by the end of 2019. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Istanbul Provincial Directorate's First Regional Election Coordination Center in Maltepe, Istanbul, Albayrak said a $1 billion payment will be made to Turkey under the deal and that it will be made before the June 24 elections.

Russian state gas giant Gazprom also said Saturday that it had signed a protocol with the Turkish government on a planned gas pipeline and agreed with Turkish firm BOTAŞ to end an arbitration dispute over the terms of gas supplies.

The protocol concerned the land-based part of the transit leg of the TurkStream gas pipeline, which Gazprom said meant that work to implement it could now begin.

Gazprom said in the Saturday statement, without elaborating, that the dispute with BOTAŞ would be settled out of court.

BOTAŞ had appealed to the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) to resolve the gas price issue with Russia's Gazprom in October 2015. Before the arbitration, both sides discussed a likely 10.25 percent discount on the prices and did not manage to sign a deal on it.

Turkey demanded a discount on the price of the natural gas from Russia via the Blue Stream and the Western Line in 2015. Gazprom initially agreed on the discount in early 2016, but later on unilaterally canceled the 10.25 percent discount applied to natural gas and Turkey applied to the International Court of Arbitration to resolve the dispute.

Albayrak said that the gas dispute was not the only issue on which Turkey and Russia agreed.

"We came to an agreement that Turkey and Russia will complete the second line of TurkStream by the end of 2019," he said.

The first line of the pipeline reached the Turkish shore at the end of April after a 930 kilometers deep-water offshore pipe-laying from Russia's Anapa to Turkey's Kıyıköy by the world's largest pipe-laying vessel, Pioneering Spirit.

TurkStream's first line will carry 15.75 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas to Turkey which is planned to be operational in December 2019. The project will have a total throughput capacity of 31.5 bcm, thanks to the second line that will go to Europe. There was an uncertainty on the advancing of the land-based line of the project that will carry Russian gas to the south European territory.

After Albayrak's announcement, Gazprom said in a statement that with BOTAŞ it will create a joint venture, TurkStream Gas Transport, to construct the second line of the TurkStream project.

"Thus, we will be completing a giant project by the end of 2019," Albayrak confirmed.

Turkey's annual natural gas consumption reached a record high of 53.5 bcm in 2017, according to Turkish Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA).

In 2017, power plants consumed 19.8 bcm of natural gas, 24 percent more than the previous year.

According to EMRA, the share of electricity production in Turkey's natural gas consumption increased from 35.5 to 37.1 year-on-year in 2017.

Turkey, the second biggest consumer of Russian gas after Germany, imports around 30 billion cubic meters of gas from Russia annually.

However, the share of Russian gas in Turkey's total natural gas import decreased to 51.8 percent in 2017 from 52.9 percent in 2016. Turkey also imported natural gas from other countries including 9.2 bcm from Iran and 6.5 bcm from Azerbaijan. The number of Turkish natural gas users increased by 1.1 million as it reached 13.6 million in 2017, the data showed. Turkey's private sector uses 10 bcm of natural gas every year - over 30 percent of the gas imported from Russia.

Turkish military officer sent to US for F-35 project charged as FETÖ member: (confusing) Report
http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/tu...-project-charged-as-feto-member-report-132632 (fair use)

May 31 2018 11:42:00

A number of Turkish Air Force pilots and non-commissioned officers who were tasked in missions abroad following the July 2016 coup attempt, including the F-35 project in the United States, have been charged as members of the Fetullahist Terrorist Organization (FETÖ), the pro-government Sabah newspaper reported on May 31.

Sabah reported that more than 100 pilots and non-commissioned officers of the Turkish Air Force “used” their tasks abroad, as well as their days off, to flee Turkey amid ongoing investigations into suspected members of the movement of U.S.-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen. The Gülen network is a former close ally of the government but is now its enemy and is widely believed to have carried the July 2016 coup attempt.

The pilots and officers who “fled” Turkey reportedly included those who were tasked in Turkey’s missions in Germany, France, Greece and the U.S. They were given these posts abroad after the coup attempt and the list reportedly includes majors and captains, as well as a non-commissioned officer, who were given tasks in the U.S. as part of the F-35 project.

The report come as a U.S. Senate panel voted in favor of a bill that calls on Washington to restrict the delivery of Joint Strike Fighters, F-35s, to Turkey in reaction to the continued detention of Pastor Andrew Brunson on terror charges and the procurement of S-400 air defense systems from Russia.

Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu had voiced confidence on May 30 that the U.S. administration will not block the delivery of the F-35s to Turkey despite measures being discussed in the U.S. Congress.

I'd say the combat effectiveness of Turkey's air force just took a huge hit with the pilots and NCO's defecting. I don't know how big Turkey's Air Force is, but losing 100 pilots and senior NCO's has to directly impact things in a bad way. I wonder if they got their families out too?

If Turkey did just lose 100 fighter pilots, then they are screwed. Turkey has 245 F-16's and 49 F-4 Phantoms, 1960's era?

They just lost one third of their total fighter pilots, assuming the 100 defectors were all fighter pilots. I assume they were since they were being trained on the F-35.

Damn, Erdogan is going to have to train a massive number of new pilots, which will cost a fortune, and take several years for them to get any good.

Searcher, it requires years of training to become an effective F-16 pilot. Erdogan can't just go down to the local mosque, find some 17 year old kids dreaming of their 70 virgins, and have them fly off in a 30 million dollar F-16. Besides, he has effectively destroyed the Turkish military, replaced them with true believer fruitcakes willing to do the whole human banzai thing. Remember when he was telling that little girl she needs to die for Turkey?

I never did find out what happened to all the naval ships that were not in port when the coup happened. Maybe they are sitting in a Greek port now?

Yes...

The Arab military ( ANY Arab military ) can afford the best toys with all the bells and whistles.

But, the quality of their personnel sucks which is why they just don't scare me...

( 8:41 ) Why Arabs Lose Wars
In the modern era of warfare, Arabic-speaking countries have been generally ineffective. Egyptian special forces fared poorly against Yemeni tribes and irregular forces. The Iraqi army has collapsed several times; The Iran Iraq War, Operation Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and against the Islamic State. And the Arabs have done poorly in nearly all military confrontations with Israel. Many Middle Eastern states have not adapted to the modern battlefield

Pentagon warns Syria’s Assad against attacking Kurdish-led forces

AFP|Published: 06.01.18 , 08:11
The Pentagon warned Syrian President Bashar Assad on Thursday not to carry out an offensive against Kurdish-led forces backed by the United States that control the country’s north-east.

“Any interested party in Syria should understand that attacking US Forces or our coalition partners will be a bad policy,” Lt. Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, director of the joint staff, said during a press conference.

His remarks came after Assad told Russian broadcaster RT he would not hesitate to use force to retake a third of the country held by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). https://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-5276079,00.html

I agree totally. The picture I posted was done so with my tongue placed so in-cheek that I sprained my face.

DD doesn't do irony very well! He seems to be very literal (if on the extreme end when visualizing scenarios) in his thinking <g>.

Doug... I highly doubt that even Turkey only has one qualified pilot per available jet. So your assumption that they just lost 1/3 of their fighter pilots is likely off by a significant number.

However, I completely agree that personnel is always the weak point for these Muslim societies (and is likely to start being a bigger and bigger problem for the U.S., as our kids grow up immersed in electronics, and not in learning real skills. My kids (including our daughter) were using tools by the age of 2, and fixing small engines by 6. These days, kids can make a touchscreen tablet work, but don't know how to use a tape measure or a screwdriver.)

For different reasons, the Arab countries (and I'm including Iran, although they are technically Persian) have had similar problems. When our experts from such companies as Bell Helicopter International were training (or trying to train) helicopter pilots and mechanics in the 1970s, they had to start with the basics... the VERY basics, such as, "this is a screwdriver. You hold it by this end. This end goes into this object, which is called a screw"

And then, due to various deeply ingrained cultural issues (lying and cheating are not seen as moral failings... just as intelligent ways to improve your personal or family's personal situation, for just one example), the moral and ethical integrity necessary to maintain, repair, inspect or learn to fly these complex machines isn't part of their mental and spiritual makeup.

In Iran, the instructors and advisors had to deal with things like the Iranian mechanics (the ones who had already graduated and who were supposedly qualified!!) "repairing" the hydraulic controls on a chopper using STRING! Which repair often lasted just long enough for the bird to get a hundred yards into the air, after which the fun commenced.

If we hadn't had the traitors in our government who allowed (hell, helped and enabled!) these countries to obtain nukes, they couldnt have developed them on their own in another hundred years. Sure, there were some bright young men from wealthy families who were sent to colleges and universities abroad, and some of them probably developed into competent engineers (many, however, continued their ingrained cultural traditions of cheating and skating by... one of my sons who went to a top US engineering school told of being approached to write papers, do research, or help them cheat on tests.. he wasn't interested, but he always wondered how it was that so many of the ended up graduating, often with "honors")

But even assuming some of them were competent, a single nuclear engineer, or even a cadre of them, can't develop, maintain, and launch a nuclear weapons program.

But thanks to traitors in our government, they have them, and they probably have enough expertise to launch them. As I understand these things (very little), nuclear weapons require regular maintenance, again a task beyond Mohammed the Goat Herder. So they are in a race against time... a fairly, limited window in which they must use them or lose them.

When you add in the beliefs of some of the more insane Muslims about their Mahdi crawling out of a well, and apparently their starting a "final war" being the trigger to enable him to do so, I have a feeling we're in the most dangerous period in history. God help us!

Arab Soldiers

Searcher, here are some pictures for you.

It was World War One, over 100 years ago, but the desert tribes were quite lethal as commando forces. You can ask the Ottomans about how good the forces led by Lawerence of Arabia were. The current generation of Arabs, after a century of oil revenue and corrupt living are useless in military terms.
