A major earthquake measuring 7.2 struck off the coast of the island of Mindanao in the Philippines on Friday, raising the risk of tsunami waves as far away as Indonesia, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

Hazardous waves could spread 300km (190 miles) away from the epicentre, which was in the sea south of the city of General Santos, the Center added.

The U.S Geological Survey later downgraded the quake to 6.8.

Came through immediately, no tsunami in Hawaii......don't ever worry about tsunamis unless they are over 7.0. Unless it its big island, than a 6 would cause one and we'd have 25 minutes to evacuate.

I watched videos from both the Indonesian Tsunami and Japan's one that took down Fukushima. Tsunamis move very fast, some 20 mph, and were 20 to 40 feet high. Anyone caught at street level died, and anyone not far enough inland, or high enough also died. The tide goes out, exposes the sea bottom, and then the water roars in, picking up everything in its path, cars, signs, trash cans, parts of buildings and then smashes everything in its path: people, buildings, trees etc.

You either drown, or are crushed by the rapidly moving debris. The Japan tsunami had large fishing boats hurtling through the streets and ending up hundreds of yards from the coastline.

Yep, a tsunami is serious business that will kill you.

I was in Honolulu in 2012 when the tsunami sirens went off due to the quake in Vancouver. The sirens echoed through the city, the helicopters were up, the streets in Waikiki were stop and go traffic trying to get out. I was at my daughter's fifth floor condo near the canal and she was at a Halloween party downtown and I didn't know what to do so I filled the tub with water! lol There were people on the beach who would not leave although the helicopters hovered and told them to go. Luckily it did not materialize. I think it was only a foot high. It was a definite experience!!

I evacuated too many times when we lived in Molokai on the beach. You have hours to get your things packed when the tsunami is far away. It's a waiting game to leave, you don't want to leave your home too early and so you watch TV and wait, while waiting you see a picture you might like to bring, a vase, then more stuff, because when you leave, your home may not be there when you return. Helicopters with loud speakers tell you to go to hgher ground if you are on the beach area & the fire Department goes door to door to make sure the are leaving, if you say you aren't they will escort you or arrest you to get you out of danger. I had a neighbor that didn't want to leave & got escorted. So what takes you 1 hour to pack takes 3 days to pit back after it's called off. We didn't have damage, but friend's on the North Shore of Molokai, lost their house, they returned after the second wave, but they heard the train engine sound coming and jumped in one of two cars to get out just as the wave hit the shore, pushing the second car into their living room before the roof Collapsed. Waves wrap around the ends of islands and hits them from both ways.

You were smart to fill the tub, the 5th floor on the canal should be fine. (Next time check how much toilet paper you have, the ships won't come back to resupply for a while after a tsunami. Food Panty is right by there to pick up last minute items) It would have been a water rise in canal, not a tsunami. I'm not vacating anymore unless it's a huge earthquake on the Big Island, then I'm heading for the mountains. I'm high enough not to worry, even though I am still feet from the beach.
