Secret Service Director Resigns

The Washington Post is reporting that the Director of the Secret Service has resigned. Joseph P. Clancy was brought back from the private sector in 2014 by former President Barack Obama.

Clancy was brought on after the agency became bogged down with security breaches and employee misconduct.

From the Washington Post:

On Tuesday, House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) said Clancy’s departure provides an opportunity to put an outsider atop the Service.

“A fresh set of eyes and new perspective is needed to restore the prestige and status expected of such an elite agency,” he said in a statement.

The Daily Caller received the resignation letter that Clancy sent out to employees at the Secret Service.

“The success of the Secret Service is achieved with great sacrifice by all of you and your families,” Clancy wrote in a letter to Secret Service staff members. “Please accept my sincere and heartfelt thanks for your dedication to our mission. My thought is, President Trump will bring in and use more of his personal security guard from here on out. The Secret Service uniformed officers will still patrol the White House and the grounds; and they will still do the diplomatic embassy patrols up and down Mass. Av. But I'm sure they will be less prevalent inside the White House, and especially the Oval Office area and the family quarters. Think-a businessman, a CEO type especially wants stability and familiarity in the people/secretaries/drivers/security detail around them. President Trump doesn't trust the Secret Service, because he doesn't "know" the officers. Head of SS picks the folks for the presidential detail-the First family has some say in it (they look at the DD214's of the detail candidates, but don't generally interview the candidates). But at the end of the day Secret Service has the endgame say so on who protects the president.
Trump's private security detail is a known quantity to him.
FYI-today I heard that White House tours by the public have been suspended for the next 3 months. (You can tour the WH, but it's set up well in advance through one's congressional office and the Secret Service). Interesting timing on this, or perhaps mere coincidence.

With a de facto choice between Obama/Hillary's successor (think Lenin at best, Stalin/Mao/Pol Pot at worst), or Trump's (Franco/Pinochet come to mind as best cases; Adolf something-or-other as a rather worse case, though still better than Stalin...).

That's all true, and I agree with your assessment.

But (and with all due respect to any parties so concerned) some of us have also grown quite weary with this hackneyed, plaintive bleat that goes "Mr. Trump should be very, very careful. He can't take any chances with disloyal Secret Service personnel who may take him out at any moment, so he must rely on his own security detail. And that's just the threats nearest him...there are a hundred million other threat vectors aimed directly Mr. Trump, so his security personnel must vigilant 24 hours a day. Everyone is after Mr. Trump, and he must have God's protective hand over him."

Frankly, we've had quite enough of all that. It started out being just vacuously stupid, but in addition, it's grown quite tiresome with all of the inane repetition.

Trump will be just fine. He has plenty of security. Probably the best that money can buy. And you're buying it for him.

If Trump had not been willing to trust the Secret Service (which has a budget far larger than Trump himself is willing to underwrite) when the time came, then he probably would have declined to run.

At this point, rather than concerning himself with Secret Service issues (of which there are none, frankly) he should worry about the upcoming Congressional inquiries regarding his involvement (if any) with the Russian Federation. He has much more to worry about from those than he does about some nebulous, unnamed threat materializing out of the aether that the Secret Service somehow overlooked.
