Trump cancels parts of GOP convention set for Jacksonville, Florida, citing coronavirus

President Donald Trump on Thursday moved to cancel the Jacksonville, Florida, portions of the Republican National Convention, scheduled for August, citing the threat of the coronavirus.

“I told my team it’s time to cancel the Jacksonville, Florida, component of the GOP convention,” Trump said at a White House briefing on the coronavirus. The state has become a hot spot for the virus.

“Thousands of people [are] wanting to be there, and I mean in some cases desperately be there,” Trump said. “People making travel arrangements all over the country.”

Trump said he will still deliver a campaign speech but “in a different form,” without giving any additional details. He said he would announce more details on the speech in the coming days.

“We won’t do a big crowded convention, per se,” he said, adding that he cares “deeply about the people of Florida.”

The Jacksonville 2020 Host Committee issued the following statement: “President Trump made the absolute right decision for the health and safety of the people of Jacksonville and of the entire state of Florida. The rise in the number of COVID-19 cases in Florida is serious and the
President and the RNC have demonstrated great concern for the safety of all Floridians.”

The announcement marked a staggering turnaround for Trump, who pushed for the convention to be moved from Charlotte, North Carolina, after a fight with the state’s Democratic governor over whether coronavirus precautions would limit the size of crowds.

In recent weeks, the convention has undergone significant changes in logistics and execution as the number of confirmed coronavirus cases continues to spike in Florida, forcing the Republican Party to rethink its planning to account for measures to avoid spreading the disease to attendees and employees.

Earlier this month, organizers for the Republican National Convention announced a severe cap on the number of people who can attend the event in Jacksonville.

A convention like this typically attracts tens of thousands of people over the course of multiple days.

A new Quinnipiac University poll found that 62% of voters said they thought it would be unsafe to hold the convention in Florida, scheduled for the week of Aug. 24.

Trump has been eager for the convention to have cheering crowds as a way to uplift his flagging campaign. His Democratic rival, Joe Biden, has opened a wide lead in the race, according to most national polls, and in swing states including Florida.

But the pandemic appears to have succeeded in scuttling Trump’s plans.

The Democratic National Convention, slated for Aug. 17-20, will be a nearly all-virtual event in Milwaukee. Delegates have been told to stay home due to health concerns, and the Democratic National Committee has said it is reevaluating how many people will be allowed on the convention floor.

In a question-and-answer session following his remarks, Trump hinted that the convention will be carried out online, but suggested the Republican National Committee is not in a rush to solidify the details. “We have time,” he said.

The coronavirus outbreak has spread worldwide, with more than 15.3 million confirmed cases and over 625,000 deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The U.S. has had more than 3.9 million cases and at least 143,466 deaths, according to the latest tallies, more than any other country.

Pardon me while I clutch my pearls.

This is not the Donald Trump of 2016.
I think he has been punched around so much since then that he's beat.
There is no fire.
I noticed the change early on this year.

It's possible that there aren't enough of us to overcome the cheating.
Or the lies or the constant drumbeat

Clearly your pearls must require clutching. And if you don't see the fire in Trump, then you must not be looking for it.

Lots of possible explanations on this one. Got to look like he's taking coronavirus seriously or he couldn't keep up the "no one needs mail-in voting with masks" idea.

A record 173 Floridians died from the virus Thursday, an average of more than one every eight minutes.
Perhaps if it was your family you'd pay more attention.

Florida has a lot of old ass people and they are starting to grumble about Trumps handling of Covid.
Without those old farts, Florida has a good chance of being flipped by the Dems. Last 2 elections, in my small sub division, we had 19 homes willing to put Republican signs in their yards. This year it's only 2.
Even at our local GOP office people have been criticizing Trump's behavior on Covid lately.

And three million people died from COPD last year. You want to shut down everything over THAT too? What about THEM??

Maybe.

Or they died with the virus.
Or they died from something.
Since there is no test that accurately detects the virus or proof that there is a virus and that it kills, or how much virus it takes to kill, that is just someone's opinion.

Since there are a lot of old people in Florida, I bet a lot of them have a lot of issues including lots of prescription drugs.

Clearly your pearls must require clutching. And if you don't see the fire in Trump, then you must not be looking for it.
Besides the things I mentioned above he's getting bad advice from his campaign

More than 140,000 Americans die of COPD each year – that is 1 death every 4 minutes! And that's for the whole freaking country. Not 3 million a year. Get your numbers straight.
In Florida alone it's 1 death from Covid every 7 minutes.
At the current rate of deaths for the entire country, 1 American is dying every one and a half minutes from Covid.
That's 3 times the rate for COPD. And the Covid death rates are preventable.

When people have someone in their family who has either died or in the hospital because of Covid, and they see idiots running around claiming that the disease doesn't even exist, or politicians/ governors actually preventing cities where 1 in every 10 people is infected, from shutting down bars and requiring masks and distance when people are in groups in public, they will do everything they can to get rid of those politicians. When someone you know dies because of the stupid bungling mistakes of politicians you never forget or forgive.

Sorry, but President Trump could have clinched the election and come out a unbeatable hero if he would have only taken responsibility for fighting Covid, instead of turning over a national problem to 50 idiot, governors to handle state by state.
But he didn't, and the biggest population centers in the country are paying a price whose bill will be paid in November. Right now Florida is in danger of going blue and it didn't have to be.

Yep there's a lot of old people here in Florida and most of them vote. :shk:
When they see their friends dying and politicians claiming Covid is just another case of the flu, they remember.

Bad advice??
Is that why he cancelled the convention in Jax?
Is that why he did a 180 and is suddenly advocating wearing a mask or even grudgingly wearing one himself.

He's wearing a mask to kill the idea of mail-in voting for good. Because if suddenly a mask is all we need to protect us--according to the Dems, word from the New England Journal of Medicine be damned--then why would we need mail-in voting?

Oh, and of course, if we're all wearing masks, then we're TOTALLY going to need voter ID. With half our faces covered, there's just no other way!

Several online shopping sources are now claiming the USPS is hiding behind the Covid, I.e., delayed to indefinitely unpredictable deliveries...... negating the efficiency of online shopping while they simultaneously destroy brick and mortar with Covid AND peaceful protesting. :)

Looks like we’re in for the full blown fabricated long haul.

Back on track a bit, I watched his announcement and it felt off to me. I was wondering if anyone else felt this. He just kept rattling on almost like he was trying to convince himself as much as he was telling us the news. The whole time I was thinking, what happened in some back room that they came up with this explanation? My first thought was Florida uninvited him on some level?

Since just about every other 1st world country and many 2nd and 3rd world countries have gotten Covid under control and now have lower death rates than the US, shouldn't we be talking about the US, or are you just another globalist?
Let's look at your 3 million Copd numbers for the world in a year.
The US is 4.2% of the world population.
If all the other countries in the world were as stupid as we have been in handling Covid there would be over 3 and a half million deaths in just half a year and over 7 million dead in one year. And that assumes we don't get more stupid than we have already been.
Those are the numbers champ, if you want to extend our mess to the rest of the world.

The reason other countries have gotten the virus under control is because, unlike here, they aren't stupid spoiled prima-donnas, who lack discipline and self control.

It seems we are the only country that has been unable to get control of this virus.
And the ironic thing is it doesn't take money or technology to control it. Wearing a mask, keeping a proper distance from others has worked to control Covid in almost every other country.

That's a possibility, but I don't think Desantis would do that.
But, last week, the local Law did say that they couldn't handle a Jax convention.

Did you construct all this is your mind or is it something you read?
45 states already allow mail in ballots, and have for a long time now.
Seriously President Trump and his family vote by mail.
Hell, last time Ivanka forgot to send her mail in ballot in by the deadline, and Jared requested a ballot but never sent it in.
Attorney General Barr, VP Pence, Kayleigh McEnany, Jared Kushner, Betsy Devoss, and others all vote by mail.
Yes I also worry about voter fraud, but it's hard to criticize mail in voting, when the leaders of the country are calling it fraud, yet all do it.
At least I feel better living in a Red county than if I lived in a Blue county, when it comes to counting the votes.
The wife and I are both voting by mail this year because I don't want to stand in line with a hundred other people when about 1 in 10 people here in Florida are carrying the infection.

there is no way in hell this man needs to be in a big ass convention in the middle of a shit storm city like Jacksonville FL. No disrespect to those who live there, but i literally just got back from the ghetto of Jacksonville last week.

NO one in their right mind would attempt to have a quilting bee in Jacksonville.

There's a difference between ALLOWING and REQUIRING, which you should be intellectually honest enough to acknowledge.

The difference that gets lost is that under NORMAL circumstances you must specifically request to vote by mail and then they mail you a ballot that you complete and mail back in. In Missouri at least, it is a fairly closed loop system where I can check that my returned ballot has been received. A relatively small number of voters do this each election compared to the number that vote in person.

Under the CURRENT circumstances they are talking about mass mailing the ballots out, no request necessary. There is a LOT more room for fraud under that scenario and a LOT more ballots at stake.

Agree. Not this year. There could have been intel that nefarious players had something in the works but even if not, would have been a security nightmare in this environment. Sheriff is a decent guy and he was not on board.

I bet the sheriff is relieved.... :p
The sheriff is the only one who was negative on the convention. A week or so ago, he did say he might not be able to support it, but everyone knows that it wouldn't just be his department that had to provide security.
I just heard the Republican Mayor of Jax on the news and he said that it was entirely the decision of Trump's team to not go ahead with the convention, and that he had nothing to do with it.
And I'm absolutely sure than Desantis would have given his eye teeth to have the convention here in Florida, so again, I think it's the President's team that made the decision.

Not like that here in Florida. From Tampa Bay Times, 30% of the people who voted in Florida voted by mail.
The policy for mail ballots has been in existence for years, and isn't changing.
You have to request a mail in ballot and your sig has to be on written request. You can order a absentee ballot online but you have to provide more info about yourself. You don't need a reason.
I think most red states have been like that for years and are not changing. I think most of the states you are talking about are blue who would probably not vote for the President anyway.

Quite a few will probably vote by mail here because of the Covid infection rates.
People in rural areas and small towns have a hard time understanding just how bad Covid is in some larger metro areas here in Florida.
We are the epicenter of Covid in the US unless you live in the stix and don't come into major metro areas.
My son gets tested twice a week and his company pays for the fast private test where you get the results in an hour. all the regular people have to wait 2 weeks for results which means the test was meaningless.
He has had one of his patients die of Covid. His patient brought it home from the hospital after an operation.
We have one person in our very small subdivision currently in the hospital with it.

I volunteer at our local GOP headquarters and people sure seem different this go around. Long time Republicans (older folks)are pissed about two things.
1. They and their loved ones being endangered by the incompetent handling of Covid compared to other countries.
2. The economy that has collapsed because of unthinking, all or nothing restrictions and rules about dealing with Covid. (Failure to close the right businesses, while leaving many others alone that could still be operated safely. The all or nothing attitude)
It's a no win situation. Common sense seems to have disappeared.

the real question is 'is it covid that killed these people'? Jacksonville used to be a great place as I remember growing up there. But the section 8 spread out from the shithole areas, and bingo so did the crime. Just sayin.... :kaid:
As for people putting signs on their lawns, I wouldn’t blame them if they didn’t in light of all these peaceful mobs....
