Trolls doll is pulled from shelves after horrified mother shares a video of the toy making 'sexual sounds' when you push a button between its legs

  • Mother, from the US, said she found the toy's 'gasping' sounds 'so disturbing'
  • Demonstrates how pressing button on Troll's 'privates' triggers 'sexual sounds'
  • Video was widely shared on Twitter - with one disgusted mother starting a petition on Change.org to get the Hasbro toy removed from shelves
  • Trolls World Tour Giggle and Sing Poppy doll has since been pulled from sale
  • Hasbro spokesperson Julie Duffy apologized to parents in a statement

A Trolls doll has been pulled from shelves after a disgusted mother shared a video of it making 'sexual sounds' when a button on its 'privates' is pressed.

The unnamed woman, from the US, explained how the Hasbro Trolls World Tour Giggle and Sing Poppy doll had been bought for her two-year-old daughter for her birthday.

But she was horrified when she discovered it made 'gasping' noises when a button between its legs was pressed and branded the toy 'disturbing'.

The doll has now been removed from sale after another mother, Jessica McManis, started an online Change.org petition calling for it to be taken out of stores, accusing it of condoning pedophilia.

Writing on the petition page, which has attracted 253,283 signatures, Jessica raged: 'Our society is conditioning our children to think pedophilia is ok. This Trolls World Tour doll named Poppy has a button on her private area under her skirt.

'When you push this button on the doll's private she gasps and giggles. This is not okay for a child's toy! This toy needs to be removed from our stores.

'What will this toy make our innocent, impressionable children think? That it's fun when someone touches your private area? That pedophilia and child molestation are ok? It's not ok! It's not fun! It's damaging and has long term affects on a child's mental/physical health!'

In the video, shared widely on Twitter after it was posted by US politician Sam Parker, the horrified mother demonstrates how the doll sings when a button on its tummy is pressed.

But she was shocked when, while showing the 'super cute' doll to her husband, she discovered an additional button on the doll's 'private parts' which was not mentioned on the box.

She explained: 'I heard some other sounds that I had never heard before, and if you look, down here, I figured video was the best way... but down here is a button, right here on her privates, and if you push those she makes these sounds.

'Like, a gasping sounds, and I know many of you might not think this is a big deal but, especially since I've had kids, this is wrong.

Mr Parker captioned the video in his tweet, which attracted more than 12,200 retweets and comments and 12,400 likes: 'Is @Hasbro normalizing grooming and facilitating child abuse?'

'This button, it says nothing about this button on the box. Nothing, it's just there and it makes a gasping sound when you touch her privates, and to me it's sexual sounds. It's so disturbing.'

Hasbro, which is based in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, revealed it is pulling the doll from shelves as soon as possible.

A spokesperson for the company, Julie Duffy, issued a statement to The Providence Journal in which she apologized to parents.

She said: 'This feature was designed to react when the doll was seated, but we recognize the placement of the sensor may be perceived as inappropriate.

'This was not intentional and we are happy to provide consumers with a replacement Poppy doll of similar value through our consumer care team. We are in the process of removing the item for purchase.'

The Trolls movie was released in 2016 and its sequel - Trolls World Tour - premiered in March this year. The character of Poppy is voiced by Anna Kendrick.

Speaking about the reaction to her petition, Ms McManus wrote in a thread containing the video: 'I didn't expect my petition to blow up like this! I'm so happy it did! They recalled the doll today.'

She added: 'There's no way someone at Hasbro didn't think that it was weird when deciding to create this doll like that.'

“Push a button on her privates?”

A plastic doll has no “privates.”
True, but even a 2 year old knows where their "privates" (my 2 year old granddaughter calls them her "buddy"! LOL!) are, and if asked where that button on the doll was would respond appropriately.

At absolute best, this was tone deaf and ignorant. At worst, it IS grooming...

The fact there is no mention of the "feature" on the box leans me towards the latter...

Yeah. it sounds like a "karen" complaint, but sadly the seguay from showing that the doll likes her button being pushed, to telling the child she has a button that is fun too will be used by some toxic skin sac to normalize his abuse of a child, probably has already been used :(

Must be a very sensitive button if it was pressed just by seating the doll. The button on the doll's belly had to be pressed to activate, same with this private part button. It had to be pressed intentionally, it would appear to me. It's disgusting that toys for young girls are now becoming training tools for pedos.

TERRIBLE TOYS
Harry Potter and the Vibrating Broom

Well, this was one way to keep Harry Potter fans interested as they grew up. Modeled after Harry's first broom, Mattel's now discontinued battery-operated Nimbus 2000 featured a grooved stick and handle for kids who wanted to ride it around the house. The dubious part: it vibrated. Some of the (now deleted) comments on Amazon were so good, they had to be written with a wink: "I'm 32 and enjoy riding the broom as much as my 12 yr old and 7 year old," wrote one satisfied customer. We bet.

Fast-forward to around 0:50 on the video, where it shows the back of the box. The tummy button is indicated by a gold arrow and a bubble of text explains its function. In the upper right corner of the box, above where it's torn, is a smaller picture of the doll, seated (thus activating the "privates" button), with another gold arrow pointing at her chest. The text bubble here reads "Hee Ha [what looks like] Ja He Hee."

Not quite sure what to do with that, but there it is.

Wait until you see AdrenalBarbie.

It makes 10 different sounds as it is being tortured until you push the button that pops out the adrenal gland and then it dies.

Why not, if this does not stop this is where it will end up.

Isn't that the broom nancy pelosi rides around on? Her face always looks like she is having a low grade orgasm.

To me, the sounds are not the problem it is the location of the button.

I guess we know what sounds this woman makes when she has sex...

Yeah, there's more than a little perception and placement that's inappropriate, Ms. Spokesperson.

Since when do little girls desire or experience being "excited" just by sitting down, to begin with, no less expect a "special" (undisclosed) "button" in that very "special" place?

The only reason you made a statement is that you got caught!!!

This is just creepy on any number of levels. The button was supposed to activated when the doll is sat down? How do you sit it down to activate it, slam it on it's butt onto the counter or something?

It's just odd that this "design feature" got all the way from idea to concept to production to distribution-yet nobody second guessed the idea, nobody thought the implications of putting buttons "there"; not one person in that entire manufacturing/distribution process even considered it an issue.
Might want to check the other "toys" this company is currently marketing.

Disturbing.
Very disturbing.

Absolutely, this is blatant grooming and an attempt to have little kids to think it is ok for someone else to press their buttons. They may associate that it is ok for them to do it to the doll, and so someone can do it to them. Some kids might even want it, with acting-out behavior, depending on their environment, if they lack attention, things that they have seen in movies, etc.

This is just insane- sick, just sick. Glad that woman exposed it and that the doll was removed from the stores.
