I talked to a tree trimming company crew about getting wood chips from them and said yes and looks like in good for a few more truck loads with them. Turn the pile few times with the kubota and get it to rot down some.
The only time I got termites was with store bought bags. But ants... geez. Fortunately, not carpenter but I swear they get in every pile until I get it all spread out. But then I am spreading it, not composting it.I wish I could use this method but unfortunately all I have every had any luck in raising with this stuff is termites, carpenter ants, yellow jackets and hornets, fire ants, and nematodes. Sigh.
ditto on the chips . . . we get 4-6 trucks a year from Asplund when they're cutting local power line right of ways. bet ya didn't know that a lot of these guys actually have to PAY to dump chips if they can't find people to take them . . . in other words ASK and ye shall receive . . . likely as much as you'd care to take.
call your power company - ask who is in charge of trees and right of ways - let them know you're interested . . . betcha get covered up in 'em
BTW what summer says about BLACK WALNUT is real. it'll kill your veggies . . . be careful with it
big time different here . . . I may be very much more rural than you are? sometimes I get calls asking if I want more - and have to turn them awayI have been asking various contractors working for the power company and Aaplund was one of them and I think the federal government got after them for hiring illegals (Mexicans). Someone was telling me I have to be willing to pay the crew a $100 per-load and no I'm not paying a $100 for a load of wood chips they have to find a place to dump it and not just anywhere.
I lucked into a major wood chip score 2 years ago--a crew was clearing the interstate right of way cutting nearly all of the trees and shredding or chipping them
they were looking for somewhere to dump the chips so I offered to let them dump them on my place (it is 3 miles from the interstate)
I have 1/2 acre 6 feet deep in wood chips
It is prety good now but it really needs one more year to be marvelous--I am using it as mulch around fruit trees right now and will probably plant pumpkins in it later this yearYou dig into that it should be black gold by now and perfect for the garden.
Nice. I'm going to have to buy mine. Tree trimmer locally has his place located a bit too far away to make it worth the gas to go get the free stuff. Would end up costing me nearly as much in gas plus dealing with the traffic in the area his place is located-right inside where the large cities business district begins.
You have to catch them when they are working in your area and it is generally with their effort to dump it in your yard rather than haul it an even longer distance or worse like having to pay the county to dump it in a land fill.
Mix Diatomaceous Earth with it.I wish I could use this method but unfortunately all I have every had any luck in raising with this stuff is termites, carpenter ants, yellow jackets and hornets, fire ants, and nematodes. Sigh.
Used to be a mill near Sanford where I could get pickup loads for free. Used to use it for stall bedding and mulch for garden.Nice. I'm going to have to buy mine. I have lost track with how many truck loads of wood chips I have gotten but the pile has grown and I will tell them with the next load thats enough. Now I need to take the tractor in June and relocate the whole pile a few feet over from where it is and do this three or four times until it's all composted down to black top soil.
