ECON Today at the grocery store.....

I was speaking with a man at the produce section of one of the largest stores in NH south east area. We were speaking about the 30 percent rise in all produce and the missing items too. He said he wife was recently laid off from TWINKIES company. I was so surprised and I asked why, he said that they were letting people go and hiring and having their store/factory? in South Carolina? I felt really bad for them because I can tell at their age, I would say mid 50's that it will be hard for them. He appeared to be disabled himself too. So sad to hear that when everyone who loves those things is so excited that they are being made again. I don't know if this is all true or not?? Maybe someone else has the scoop.

Angle soft toilet paper prices went up recently. Now the rolls are wound much much looser. There is far less on a roll than just last year.

Anyone who does any shopping would have to be seriously brain dead not to notice the prices going up and the sizes of portions going down.

Oh yeah, there is no inflation, my butt...

I buy the dog's meat at our local grocer during the summer months and I am out of venison and moose meat. I buy the reduced to sell stuff. Today I saw packages of beef flank steak.......$6.99 a package !! That was what they were before the supposed mark down. Usually it's half price on the last sell by date. Someone HAD to screw up badly. No way I am paying that much for expired meat. If I hadn't been in such a hurry to get in and out I would have gotten the manage of the meat dept and shown him. Flank steak........not even a good cut.

Sam's Club was giving $2 off the huge pack of Bounty Paper Towels that I always buy for $18 - so, with the two dollar discount the price now would be $22 - wow, thanks for having this "sale" Sam's Club - didn't think I'd remember the old price . . . or sumpthin'?

I was saying this very thing to DH on Wed as I was scanning the weekly sales ads for our local grocery stores. Tuna used to be $.50/can and now it goes ON SALE for $1.29. Peanut butter used to be about $1-@1.50/jar, now it goes ON SALE for $2.50. etc, etc, etc

Wow. Ten replies and not one about the actual question of what was going on with the new Twinkies maker shifting operations.

Prices are going up every month. I don't know how the poor soul with a large family is making ends meet.

It's scary.

And yet the government tells us, "Inflation is low!!"

BS.

Hostess shut down their plants and everyone got laid off due to disagreements with the union. They have since reformed and are only opening up a few plants. The one up here is not reopening.

Didn't Bimbo buy Hostess? Bimbo is headquartered, or at least their "home" is Mexico. They bought Mrs. Baird's bakeries several years ago. I've been wondering where their bakeries are now also. Will try to check that out.

OOPS! Sorry, I'm wrong.

The branch of Hostess/Dolly Madison that makes Twinkies was bought (approved by bankruptcy court) March 11, 2013 by Apolo Global Management for 410 Million Dollars. They are headquartered in New York City. Didn't find any info on where their bakeries are...will check further.

Flowers Foods, Bimbo, and United States Bakery ALL three ended up with the "bread" departments. Different kinds of bread went to each of these.

There's a lot more but didn't delve into those since Twinkies was the main topic here.

You can't have continuous droughts in the bread basket without getting shortages and price increases. Brace yourself for meat prices to start climbing, particularly beef. Twinkies is the least of our problems.

Been to the grocery store lately Dex?

You state; "Brace yourself for meat prices to start climbing, particularly beef". Beef HAS BEEN climbing for quite some time and it's just about to reach the "out of reach" zone for most people.

Since it's obvious most on this thread don't care about the "Twinkies" thing I'll say one more thing. There were 11 bakeries making them, now only 4. They are located in Georgia, Kansas, Illinois, and Indiana. Found nowhere they are moving to South Carolina. Headquarters moved from Texas to Kansas.

God has a plan, Trust it!
I had sticker shock when I went to the local farmers market last weekend. My first time there, and mind you, I live in a "ritzy" area, so this is likely part of the problem (it's "fashionable now to shop a farmers market). But I picked up four really nice tomatoes to purchase, and my fault, I didn't look at the price as I was being chatty....the darn things cost me $13 for 4 tomatoes!!!

Needless to say, I never shop there ordinarily. There is a bodega near my work that sells really nice produce very cheap. I can get the tomatoes for $0.99/lb there.

But $13?!?

We were spending on average of $450 every other week on groceries. I remember budgeting $100-$150 a week for groceries.

Since meat is so expensive now, DS and I have turned to "mostly" vegetarian now. That is not to say we wont eat meat, but that we've cut down. We have healthy meals with fruits, grains, veggies, legumes, etc for most of the week, and maybe one day a week with a meat.

He's been great by coming up with easy recipes that I can do. Boy its good to have a chef for a son when you're not really a good cook. Don't know where his talent came from, but it wasn't from me! :)

Maybe our imperial first family will be quoted as saying: "if the people can't afford meat, dairy, or produce, let them eat Twinkies!"

Are you kidding??? Mooch TELLING US to eat something/anything NOT good for us? Remember those school lunch menu's the kids wouldn't touch? Maybe she'll cut them a break and put Twinkies on that menu instead of "grains" which are limited anyway; according to her.

Thank you. I feel badly for the people who got laid off. Things are not great job wise around here. After the age of 55 ish. it must be doubly hard.

Forgive me if I don't shed any tears for the bakeries, my wife just got laid off 2 weeks ago and I'm getting laid off at the end of the year I was told this week. Beef prices have always been high around here so I guess I'm not seeing the difference, particularly when I probably pay 3-4 times the cost of living as 3/4 of the country just so I can remain in an area that still has jobs.

Frankly I do have concern for the economy in the midwest because I've relatives there and must of my bloodline comes from there, I just can't fret over some Twinkie factories, I've got my own burdens, along with the majority of this country.

Excellent point. And true inflation, as compared to the fake stuff, is just starting to roll. Better have purchased your house. Interest rates are going up.

I didn't mean to disparage anyone who is struggling and needing work. I spent most of my life working two jobs to make ends meet and I commend all who have families to feed now. If we had not raised all of our own veggies, fruit and some of our meat, we would not have been as healthy as we were. I cannot imagine what all of you with families are going through now and my heart goes out to all of you. Hubby and I are making it by the skin of our teeth with what I saved over the 56 years working outside of our home. Before that, when our babies were babes, I cleaned other peoples homes and took in washing and ironing. We made it by the Grace of GOD. I see young people today with carts overflowing and I say a silent prayer for them. Beautiful children by their side as they shop. We really need, desperately, to get our country back to being self-sufficient for the most part with good jobs for Americans first and then help others.

As to the Apollo Global Management................that is nothing but a NWO agri-business........they are sucking up all the food corps. they can...they own Henry's, Sprouts (and bought out Sunflower and changed name to Sprouts) and I don't know what else, besides the Hostess division.........they are no goodniks.....

The quote isn't on their website any more.............but they use to have some board members short bio's and a quote for each one...............one of their honchos statement read something like this:

"We make more profit out of chaos"....................doesn't that warm your innards???????????????????

I won't eat their faux foods............it's poison..............

quite we need to re-establish effective effort vs reward, just because you exist doesn't mean you are entitled to anything
