As we learned in the 60's in case of a nuclear exchange and you survived the blast and fireball and pressure wave, fallout and slow death was waiting unless you could hide from the radiation behind a suitable berm and remain alive with preplaced food and water. One thing I remember is a civil defense film that explained how you could protect your thyroid from radioactive iodine by painting your inner thigh with tincture of iodine, about the size of a dollar bill. This would enter your blood stream and your thyroid would take it up and utilize it instead of it's radioactive counterpart. My grandfather would put three 3 drops of iodine in his Old Hudson Bay once a week. He learned to do this when an early experimental nuclear reactor in central Minnesota melted down and dumped its contents into a river south of Brainerd. He was a sheriff of Crow Wing county.
