Twenty-two officers were injured in the chaos with two needing hospital treatment after being called to reports of a "large unlicensed music event".
Hundreds of people were seen on the streets with cops issuing a section 60 dispersal order in an attempt to stop the violence.
And footage from last night has emerged showing how one thug even appeared to brandish a blade at officers in the terrifying scenes.
Others were filmed screaming as two youths climbed on top of a cop car and started to smash it with a bat.
Footage later showed a cop car with a broken windscreen left on the side of the road as the riots descended into chaos.
The string of videos from last night also show a group of cops having to back away from youths as they storm towards them throwing objects.
In a clip, a person can be heard saying: "They have run the police out of here."
And shocking videos uploaded to social media even appeared to show people involved in a terrifying knife fight.
Home Secretary Priti Patel slammed the violence as "utterly vile".
She said: "Just last weekend, the whole country came together to praise our heroic police officers for putting their own lives on the line to keep us safe. I'll be picking up with the Met Commissioner immediately."

PC Reg Hollis said they had come under 'sustained attack'
It was reported that one person was shot during the chaos, however that has not been confirmed.
And Pc Reg Hollis this morning tweeted that offiers had come under "sustained attack from bottles and missiles."
He tweeted: "Four on my team struck but ok. Tactical withdrawal.
"Everyone of us wanted to kit up and go back in , due to injured officers unable to do so.
"Proud of all officers there last night. Very Hostile crowd."
And the Met Police Federation added: "15 more colleagues injured in deplorable scenes. Police officers are not punchbags.
"This violence is despicable. We wish our injured colleagues all well."
Met Police today confirmed a "small number" of police cars had been damaged, with four people arrested for assault and public order offences.
It's not the first time that police have faced violence and injuries this summer.
A mounted cop was hurt when her horse bolted during protests in London earlier this month.
And thirty-eight police officers were injured in the "indefensible hooliganism" in demonstrations against the Black Lives Matter movement.
'SICKENING'
This morning, images showed rubbish strewn across the streets after the riots.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan added: "I'm in touch with the Met about the completely unacceptable events in Brixton overnight.
"Violence against the police will not be tolerated. Large gatherings during COVID19 are deeply irresponsible and risk others' lives."
Addressing the violence last night, BCU Commander Colin Wingrove said: “Our role is to protect the public and ensure guidelines are adhered to in order to prevent the spread of Covid-19 protecting the NHS and save lives
“Our officers work incredibly hard to engage and explain the public health message and regulations to prevent such gatherings occurring.
“Last night we received numerous concerns from residents complaining about a large gathering, noise, anti-social behaviour and violence and officers responded to those concerns.
“These gatherings are unlawful, as well as posing a risk to public health and against coronavirus restrictions.
“The violence shown towards officers is totally unacceptable and we will not tolerate it in any form.
“An investigation into the incident is now taking place and those involved will be brought to justice.”
One woman described last night's scenes as "disgusting and sickening".
She tweeted: "They are out of control and you want to continue to ease lockdown?!?!?!?! How were they allowed to have a BLOCK PARTY that had hundreds of people and it didn’t get locked off??"
She added: "And this wasn’t even the worst part , weapons were thrown at police, an abandoned police car smashed up, people’s cars parked smashed!!
"Police driven out onto the main road by these disgraceful people shame on all of you!!!!!!"
Lambeth Police had previously said they had received reports of a "possible unlicensed music event".
They said: "Police will be in the area carrying out reassurance patrols so feel free to say hello".
