VIDEO The Weekly Movies are Coming to an End

Last Thursday archive.org was down most of the day. They made one change that destroyed the search methods I've been using to find movies. They also deleted many obvious movie uploads. I'm not sure what else they might have done.

The core issue is I can no longer see who favorited a movie. From that, I would work backwards to see what they had posted or their other favorites. If I like one movie they have favorited, there is a decent chance I'd like others they show an interest in. Multiply that by 10's of different people and that has been the basis for finding movies to post here for more than a year. It was a very effective spider search method. They could be closing a privacy hole for their members or stopping people like me; why doesn't matter.

Most movies now posted use cryptic titles as a sort of camouflage. When you see the cryptic title, you might be able to mentally descramble the name. However to search by name would be hundreds of possibilities just for a single movie title with no certainty of finding it. Finding a lot of movies searching by name just doesn't work well.

I can't continue as before. It would be very hard to find good new sources and they've deleted many of my old ones. I tried joining archive.org but still couldn't see personal favorites like before. It is very easy and probably a useful thing to do if you want to check out many of their e-books or see member-only content. All it takes is choosing a username and providing a real email addy (they send a verification email); no real name or address is required.

I was going to wait until tomorrow night to post this, but I've known since Monday night what happened. Since Monday, I have not come up with reasonable (to me) alternatives. I don't deal well with youtube commercials and will not post their DRM movies with ads. Others can choose to do it, I won't. Also you can't save those type of movies from youtube and saving movies has been an important part (to me) of posting the movies. There are some normal movies, mostly older, on Youtube that are good and can be saved. Housecarl did a good job of finding them.

There are other places on the web that show movies and TV, but I have no idea what they put on your computer in return for showing a video to you. Others can post that if they understand it. I won't risk adding spyware to people's computers. Is it a big risk? I don't know. Also there is the issue of saving.

This weekend, I will post the decent links I have to share, including some provided to me by other members (thank you). I do ask (insist?) that the really good archive.org links continue to stay in the member-only areas. It will be very hard to find good new sources at archive.org so I really do not want to lose the ones I know about now. Posting them all over Main will make it much more likely for them to be discovered then deleted (and anger me in the process).

I didn't plan the changes at archive.org, but they forced a break from posting movies.

It would be wonderful if someone else had an idea and continued to share with TB.
People are interested, but a new solution is required.

This is a sad night for me. The movies were something I could contribute to the board.
Now that has been taken away from all of us.

Some (many?) of the past movies are still available. I'll add a "movies" tag to the thread to make them easy to find.

Get some rest 1911. You provided a service while it lasted. Someone got their panties in a bunch somewhere along the line. Thanks for the work you put into the project.

Im glad you were able to do it. I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did. Especially with some of the newer titles you mentioned. So a high five from me.

You have done yeoman service in providing these movies to us. It's become an integrated part of our preps, actually. You provided great entertainment, and in a tshtf situation, a welcome diversion.
If there was a TB2K version of the congressional medal of honor, you sir certainly have earned it.
And you'll always be minister of culture and enlightenment to me.

THANK YOU!

Thank you for the movie threads. I watched several.
I wonder what's up with archive, was under the impression they were about preserving stuff.

Thank you for all the joy you've delivered to us. It was good while it lasted, but most good things do come to an end.
I hope an alternative can be found, but do appreciate your work in building up a small movie library on my tablet.

Maybe instead of a half a dozen titles it could be limited to the "Movie of the week?"

Yunno, kind of like the ongoing Comic Strip now appearing on the Forum?

I'd like to see Dr. Zhivago (political and human interest) or Hidalgo (like kind) both of which I'm sure I could find online - but just haven't taken the time to find or watch.

And that's the beauty of the movie thread - find a movie RIGHT THERE, click it, and your next 2-3 hours are spoken for without an argument. (So many of the online sites are ads, or "sign up now", or "See penile stimulation" ho hum)

Anyway, thanks for your effort to widen our horizons. 1911 is not just a model year.

I'm sorry it has to come to an end. It was always a treat to see what you'd found and brought 'home' for our entertainment.

Thanks a million!

Thanks. I have dozens of movies you posted I downloaded for my library. I have all 72 poirot's for example.

The new ones with David Suchet? Man, those are good. All that Art Deco styling, Suchet's on-point accent, and some great stories make that whole series one to watch.
