Prep Genrl The 2017 Eclipse

Is anyone doing anything special for the 2017 Eclipse? I posted in the Members NW section three articles concerning the eclipse in Oregon. From what I've read and heard from others across the state, they expect the traffic to be horrendous, the campsites and hotels (can you say price gouging?) are booked, stores are gearing up for a huge uptick in sales from visitors, anyone with half an acre is planning an event (ok, maybe a little exaggeration there) and oh yeah, its fire season on both sides of the Cascades!

I got those eclipse glasses they have in the stores for family and the kids across the street tucked away already. Putting extra ice in the freezer. Will go shopping a week ahead of the eclipse and hunker down. May have guests/campers out here, too. Oh, and I think I'll make sure the cars are gassed up. I bet gas will be high and maybe scarce.

What are you doing for this grand solar event? What have I missed? :D

been following the same spectator explosion expected for Carbondale IL - it's the supposed epicenter of the event .... they trying to prepare for the crowd on the private and public levels - definitely an area to avoid if you're not interested in the viewing .....

Cell phones. I read somewhere, sorry, no link, that cell towers may be overwhelmed as the population increase will outstrip the tower's ability to handle the volume. Just heard that the county is allowing 150 campers and 10 dry RV camping spots just up the road from us for $100/2 nights. We are going to stay home.

As info, when the cell towers get overloaded with calls, try texting. Apparently some of the bandwidth is reserved for text. This is what we discovered during the initial Katrina response (once the cell system was reestablished). Texting almost always worked while voice was a crap shoot.

Got the day off, will be sitting on the porch with the kid sipping sweet tea with a welding hood on. Should be a good show in Western KY. Just glad I'm very secluded.

100% is west of us. We will see 99% from my porch so I'll stay home. I don't have a welding hood but do have two lenses that we will use.

Wondering if any meaning since Trump was born on an eclipse?

I have heard that a hospital in the totality area will not schedule any elective surgeries for the week before or after the eclipse and no vacations will be scheduled for that time period. They are also laying in the anti-toxin/anti-venom for snake bites.

I hope this is all an overkill. It's sounding more and more like this could easily turn out into TEOTWAWKI for those in the path. All it will take is one event like a forest fire, earthquake, power outage, etc. and there will be a whole lot of hurting with way too many people outnumbering locals to turn a local event into a major disaster.

Bumping back to the top as world events are now coalescing to on or near the date of the eclipse. What a better time to pull stuff off with so many Americans away from home and concentrated in a band about 60 miles wide from coast to coast. It could put a damper on many Eclipse Parties.

What eclipse, oh yeah, that thing, not doing a darn thing, don't care a thing about it. We will be safe and sound right here in the woods.

Staying home and watching it from here. Maybe tuning into the news just to see what happens, checking TB obviously! Probably grill something.

I have my eclipse glasses ready and managed to get the day off. My baby and I will spend the day together watching the eclipse and enjoying the extra time together.

Myself and a half dozen folks are driving down to Salem Oregon for a eclipse party. A friend of all of us, is hosting the party at her home.

Just talked with my Chief of Police friend (small northern Colorado town), said he just heard we are expecting 600,000:eek: people pass through this corridor (I25) to get to Wyoming for the eclipse.

He said he needs to hire a few more officers - wasn't expecting this number of travelers!!

Anyone driving to/through Colorado around/at that time - heads up.

I'm sure this applies to the other 'affected' states.

It's gonna be crazy for a few days.

I live right off I25 - I'll be on 'ecliipse traffic watch'.:popcorn1:

Traffic on Monday will be the worst. The campers will wander in between Friday and Sunday, but just about all the temporary campsites have to be cleared by either 12:30 or 1:30. Then there are the hotel people with their checkouts all around noon. I'm not going anywhere. :)

Evidently, there is some concern about credit/debit card services failing due to too many people using the system. Bring cash everyone!

Neither here nor there.
We will experience 94% coverage here in central Iowa. I'm betting it'll be really cloudy and possibly raining during the eclipse.

If you are in an area of totality, you might want to get the last of those necessaries today. I was in the local WinCo (grocery store) and the parking lot and aisles were packed. The store was busy, the clerks restocking everything as fast as they could. The milk and bread aisles were stocked but thinning noticeably. Fruits and veggies, too. Not empty, but thinning. I went in about 2pm and got out by 3pm. On a Wednesday. It's never that busy that time of day. Most of the checkers were open and there were lines two or three deep. Everyone was courteous but the cashier was a little nervous about what it would be like Friday and Saturday. She said it has been busy for two weeks and getting worse every day.
