LIMESTONE COUNTY, AL - Alabama State Troopers say text messaging may have contributed to a deadly wreck on Highway 72 early Thursday morning. It happened about 7:05am at the intersection of Mooresville Road.

Troopers say Edna Taylor Barker, 59, was driving north on Mooresville Road in a 1997 Acura. She was hit at the intersection of Highway 72, by a 2001 Chevrolet truck, driven by 23-year-old Feliciano Diaz-Perez of Lilburn, Georgia.

Barker was hit on the driver's side and died at the scene. She was wearing a seat belt. Troopers say Perez was also believed to be wearing his seat belt. He was not hurt.

Barker was an employee of the Limestone County Correctional Facility.

Troopers continue their investigation, but say driving while texting with an electronic device may have been a contributing factor in this crash.

....Feliciano Diaz-Perez of Lilburn, Georgia
Yeah, right.

Should've been "Feliciano Diaz-Perez of Mexico, now residing illegally in Lilburn, GA."

Based on the look of that car, I'm surprised I didn't hear that all the way over at my house.

They have no concept of collision, death, and dismemberment. They are Always assuming the seat belts, air bags and insurance cards will SAVE THEM>

Having grown up with Bias Ply Tires before radials, before car seats were mandatory, before Life Flights and Trauma Centers, and not wearing belts until 'they' started issued tickets i think the older drivers have a greater deal of respect for the road. And not alot of interest in text messages.

ATHENS, Ala. (AP) — Authorities say a Georgia man may have been trying to send a text message during a deadly crash in north Alabama.

State troopers and the Limestone County coroner say 23-year-old Feliciano Diaz-Perez of Lilburn, Ga., allegedly ran a red light on U.S. 72 on Thursday morning. His vehicle collided with a car driven by 59-year-old Edna Taylor Barker Harris, killing her.

Troopers say the man might have been trying to send a text message while driving at the time of the wreck.

No charges were filed, but prosecutors will review the case once an investigation is complete.

Harris was a longtime employee of the state prison in Limestone County.

Hoo boy at some of the comments on the WHNT site. Talk about reinforcing the Alabama stereotypes.

Who was texting and whether or not they were at the time of the crash is easy to determine, if the investigators really want to, that is. Just check each driver's service providers call logs for that date and time.
Now, if the youngster was texting at the time of the crash, AND he turns out to be an illegal alien, we may never know.

Authorities charge man with vehicular homicide after fatal Limestone County accident

ATHENS, AL -- State troopers have charged 23-year-old Feliciano Diaz-Perez with vehicular homicide after troopers say he caused a wreck because he was texting.

Last week, Alabama State Troopers said Diaz-Perez, of Lilburn, Ga., was texting on his cell phone when he ran a red light at U.S. 72 and Mooresville Road, hitting Edna Taylor Barker, 59, of Decatur, on the driver's side of her car.

Barker was prounounced dead at the scene.

Trooper Curtis Summerville said the vehicular homicide charge was a combination of running the red light and negligence from texting.

Criminal charges are EXACTLY what should happen EVERY TIME a crash is caused by someone yakking on the phone or texting.

Notice I didn't say "accident."

Because it is no "accident" when some asshole who couldn't wait until their vehicle was stopped to make their call or send their text injures or kills someone. It is negligent, and the result of a "screw you, I'll do whatever I want to" attitude. Pure and simple.

Could not agree more Citybear.

I am of a mind that there is NO such thing as a car "accident" anyway. Someone is ALWAYS at fault. If all laws are followed and all drivers maintain full control of their vehicles, "accidents" are impossible. There is always SOMEONE who is negligant.

My bet is that he IS here illegally, has no insurance, and doesn't give a sh*t about the "gringo b*tch" he killed. He should get a bullet in the back of his head, and his carcass shipped back to mey-hee-co.

We need to stop worrying so much about "setting a dangerous precedent" and start recognizing the realities of life. PC thinking is killing this nation.

Pretty much anybody under the age of 35 is absolutely freakin SUSPECT of texting and driving, I don't care what color or gender they are, its their age people and has nothing to do with anything else. The younger gens are stupid for their texting habits and they are an incredible public health risk.

I am a victim of car wreck due to texting. I was in a major accident 2 years ago because the busty 18 yr old was texting instead of watching oncoming traffic while she made her left turn across the hwy. I SAW her texting as I t-boned her. If I was a freight train she would have been nothing more than a grease stain on the tracks...she's lucky I wasn't a freight train but I might as well have been for all the attention she was paying to her driving. Fortunately for me my car outweighed her by a ton but unfortunate for me, my car was totaled and guess who got stuck taking the loss...me.

I'm still thinking of taking her to court, all it takes is phone provider records and she's toast. I'm just not that kind of person unless I absolutely have to be and in this case I haven't had to be...yet.

I just saw the same exact accident last week happen right in front of me and I'm pretty sure that one of the two drivers was texting...if not both of them. I jumped out of the car to make sure they were alright and when they both came out on their feet I bailed but I would bet my bottom dollar one of them was texting.

Laws are only for those that don't need them already. Everyone else could care less about some stinking law.
Oddly enough, I saw a police officer talking on a cell phone while driving his patrol car, just today as he passed me. Along with at least 50 % of all the other drivers within my sight. It is illeagle to do so while driving in this state.
Or so they say.
