Hi,

If you are interested in getting open carry going in Texas now is the time to holler at your reps in Austin. I spoke with Rep Lavender and he indicated that this should be assigned to the homeland security committee. He also indicated that it would help if we contact the chairman of the committee as well.

The bill this year is HB700. Get on the phones and emails and tell your friends, too.

here is the link to the bill

I would prefer constitutional carry but this might be a step in that direction.

If anyone knows a TX state senator that might sponsor this in the senate that would help too.

I prefer Open Carry over Concealed Carry. That way you know people are armed and hopefully less likely for criminals to act.

I wish Texas was considered to have Constitutional Open Carry. And I feel that is the way to push. However at least this could be a step in the right direction.

I just finished reading the bill. The thing I like about this bill is that it give the option for CHL people to open carry. So someone with the license could choose to conceal carry or to open carry. However if I read it right, it does not allow conceal or open carry in churches.

I'm thinking about starting a Facebook group to try to promote / support the bill.

I would open carry. An armed society is a polite society and I think seeing someone open carry might just prevent an action that could have gone against them. Bullies don't attack the strong, they go for the weak and bad guys don't try to find someone that will resist them, they too want to prey on the weak. If you see someone open carry, especially if it is tied to a CCP then you don't they are not a bad guy.

If you see someone without a weapon, they could be concealing one but you don't know if they are a good or a bad guy.

Both concealed carry and open carry are good to go. Some people prefer one over the other, as I see it, should be your choice. At some point in time having both will lead to Constitutional Carry, each is an important step in that direction. What you prefer is what YOU prefer, the arguments on both sides are just that, arguments of YOUR personal way of going, not necessarily how other see it. Texans would benefit by this bill in the overall, it needs passed. I get that open carry should not even be an issue due to the 2A, but that is not an applicable argument about this bill at this time, at least this bill moves in the right direction for all citizens to open carry if they so desire. We have open carry laws and concealed carry in New Mexico, they work fine for ALL and their choices.

I would only open carry to make a political statement. Never for self-defense except out in the woods.

One of the thoughts that has been brought to my attention, is that some people who are "anti-gun" are not actually anti-gun, they are just afraid of them, because they do not understand them, have not had personal experience with them, and / or only see the the way they are used in Hollywood and are demonized by some in the media. If most of their experiences are negative, it makes sense that they have a negative outlook on them. One of the benefits of having both open carry and concealed carry, is firearms that are openly carried will be seen and experienced in hopefully positive ways (or at least in ways where people see that they are something to be afraid of).

I friend and I just created a facebook group called "Texas Open Carry" http://www.facebook.com/TexasOpenCarry
I will be trying to come up with some insightful things to post there. If anyone has any ideas or words of wisdom to share, please feel free to send me a PM (or I guess post it in this thread for discussion!)

I lived in Houston 1963-1964 and saw men with their guns strapped on their hips walking the streets.....was told it was legal at that time....when did it change.

Did a little research, and came up with this:

"In 1994, there were 2,022 murders in Texas, and there were an average of 2,184 murders every year from 1985-1994. The CHL law was passed in 1995. In 2011, there were 1126 murders in Texas, and from 1995-2011 the average was 1347 murders in Texas per year. Even though the number of people living in Texas from 1985 to 2011 has increased dramatically from 16 Million to 25 Million, the murder rate has been reduced by almost half!"
