Customers at H-E-B on West Avenue sport masks as they leave the store.
H-E-B will require customers to wear masks at all of its locations, including stores in areas that do not mandate wearing them.
The new policy, which has exceptions for children and individuals with health-related issues, will go into effect Wednesday.
Over 85 percent of H-E-B stores are located in areas that already require customers to use masks, the company said. Under the new policy, H-E-B will require face coverings in areas which do not operate under such ordinances.
"The health and wellness of our Partners and Customers is our top priority," H-E-B said in a statement. "Wearing masks is a proven way to slow the spread of the virus and allows businesses to operate safely during the pandemic."
A spokesperson added that H-E-B has not experienced issues in Bexar Country and customers have worn face coverings.
On June 17, San Antonio officials mandated that local businesses require their employees and customers to wear masks. Gov. Greg Abbott said he would not take issue with the order and other local governments followed Bexar County's lead.
More than 100 H-E-B employees working at San Antonio stores have contracted COVID-19 in June. The retailer recently reinstated purchasing limits for paper products, including toilet paper, tissues and paper towels.
