Detroit police fatally shot a man Friday afternoon while investigating a deadly Fourth of July block party — an incident that quickly escalated, and sparked tensions between law enforcement and police brutality protesters.

Police Chief James Craig says the victim was an alleged gang member who pulled a pistol out of his waistband and fired at the officers first.

But demonstrators aren't convinced and have converged on the scene, with about 50-plus chanting "No Justice, No Peace" with others responding "F*** these racist ass police."

According to Craig, who held a press conference about an hour after the shooting, here is what happened:

At about 12:30 p.m. Friday, Detroit police had gone to west side neighborhood to arrest a suspect in the Fourth of July killings. While approaching the suspect, he said, a second person arrived at the scene and got into a struggle with an officer, allegedly pulling a semi-automatic pistol from his waist and firing shots over his shoulder at police.

Residents in the area confront Detroit Police officers after the shooting death of a suspected gang member on West McNichols Road at San Juan Drive in Detroit, Friday, July 10, 2020.

"The officer pushed him away, that’s when additional officers, fearing for their lives … fired several rounds striking the suspect," Craig told reporters at the scene. "We’re still very early in this investigation ... Based on what I know right now, this suspect was unprovoked and just fired on the officers."

According to Craig, police have recovered the gun that the suspect allegedly used on police, along with casings from that weapon.

A man who described himself as the uncle of the victim doesn't buy any of it.

Asar Amenra, uncle, Hakim Littleton, 20, we don’t know for sure, we know that the police harass people, we know that police always f from black people, we hear one thing from the police andn another the comm told us that the police pulled up, told hakeem to get on the ground, he put his hands up, and these mf shot him in the back at the head, my sister saw his body at the hospital and he has two shots to the head, him to get on the ground and shot him in the head, F the police is how I’m feeling, we tired of white supremacy system, see these young peole, they are ready for war, he worked all the time, doing this thing, just a typical young kid, it’s the same scenario, whether it’s in minn whether it’s in LA, this ends that, he allowes

Following DPD protocol, the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative duties pending the investigation.

According to Craig, the shooting stems from a July 4 party on the 17100 block of San Juan, where shortly after midnight an argument broke out and led a shooting. Eight people were shot; three died.

Following the shooting, police from the 12th precinct and a gang intelligence unit did surveillance in the area and received tips about a possible suspect, he said, so they went back to the scene on Friday to make an arrest.

According to Craig, that suspect was wanted on an outstanding felony warrant and allegedly had ties to a local gang. When police went to arrest him Friday at about 12:35 pm, as they approached to arrest, he said, officers observed a second suspect walking in their direction. That man was an associate of the wanted suspect, he said, and allegedly also had ties to a gang.

Craig said that as an officer approached that second suspect to question him, a struggle ensued between the officer and the suspect, who allegedly pulled out a gun from his waistband and started firing shots over his shoulder.

According to Craig, the main suspect that police had gone to arrest was taken into custody without incident and is now being interviewed. No officer was injured in the shooting.

The identifies of the suspects have not been released.

The shooting comes against the backdrop of a nationwide Black Lives Matter movement protesting police brutality.

"There’s been a lot of violence in our city," Craig said. "That’s certainly a concern."

starting to throw stuff at police. Police shooting tear gas. They’re throwing it back at police and have electric fans blowing it back at police

Not really. The HK protesters used leaf blowers to push tear gas clouds back, and it was on TV. It's a quick and easy innovation to adopt.

Any bit of "planning" opens up a conspiracy to commit charge. I should have completed the thought. My bad.

Watching the march on Fox 2 and the reporter is talking to someone from the National Action Network (Sharpton's group) in the crowd. So the rabble rousers are definitely stirring the pot.

Crowd gathers at scene where man was shot and killed by police on Detroit's west side

Crime and Public Safety

FOX 2 Detroit

DETROIT (FOX 2) - A crowd is gathering Friday evening at the scene where a young man was shot and killed earlier Friday afternoon by Detroit police.

This is happening at West McNichols Road and San Juan Drive on the city's west side, just hours after a man who's been identified by witnesses as Hakeem Littleton was shot and killed by Detroit officers.

The police account of what happened is that Littleton got into a struggle with officers and, while being held down, grabbed a gun and shot at an officer over his shoulder. Chief Craig said multiple officers then returned fire. But witnesses say Littleton didn't have a gun and that video shows a different account of what happened.
FOX 2 is asking anyone who has that video of what happened to call us at 248-552-5103. Chief Craig has also called a press conference for 7:30 p.m. in which he plans to release a video that he says shows the shooting death.

Meanwhile, the activist group Detroit Will Breathe, which has been taking the lead in many protests in the city since they broke out nationwide after the death of George Floyd, called for followers to head to the area as soon as possible tonight in response to the shooting.

FOX 2 has a crew at the scene, where police appeared to have deployed tear gas on the crowd around 5:30 p.m.
Protesters then began marching just before 6 p.m. and headed towards Detroit's 12th precinct at 7 Mile and Woodward, where they were eventually by a line of police officers blocking their path.

Sam Riddle from the National Action Network was seen in the protest crowd.
"This is not something that Hollywood Craig or Mayor Duggan can control right now and they're going to have to take into consideration how we handle public safety in Detroit, not policing," he told FOX 2.
You can watch a livestream from the scene here if you cannot see the video player above.
This is a developing story. Stay with FOX 2 for updates.

300 or so people protesting. The mood of this crowd is ugly. When night falls this crowd could go 'off".

Let's Go Brandon!
Look, the solution is self-evident: NO POLICE RESPONSE IN BLACK AREAS. Let ‘em kill each other. Leave the bodies to bloat where they fall.

^^^^THIS^^^^

1. As I have stated many times, the new Civil Rights Act 2,
and its associated new criminal justice system for the Africans,
would have prevented this from having occurred.

2. The POS African race, still believes that slavery exists.

3. The POS African race considers LEO, to be nothing more
than slavery task masters(I have been told this),
and they have incredible hatred towards African LEO.
This is why they ALWAYS jump and run,
and why they are ALWAYS going to fight LEO.

3. This is nothing more than tribal warfare, not gang warfare.

4. Detroit PD should not have gone onsite, to do an investigation,
and arrest, from an incident that was nothing more than
tribal warfare. Detroit PD should have stated, that they are going
to let the tribal elders, handle the July 4th block party incident.

Peoples, study African tribes, and especially study South Africa,
as that is what the ZUSA is going to eventually become.

Please be safe everyone. It is only going to get worse, much worse.

Regards to all.

I have been back helping at Tactical Machining last week helping the owner get some stuff caught up. Sales are off the charts and finding forgings for lowers and upper are like getting hens teeth (Unless you are Remington or Ruger). Several cops have been coming in getting some gun builds finished up. Two different cops had stories of suspects pulling guns on cops, and one shooting at them where they did not shoot the suspect for fear of being the next guy charged with murder and put on national display.

A bunch of others have turned in their retirement papers this month. In case you have not figured it out yet , we are on our own. The remaining cops wont do anything and they are leaving in droves. The HR director for the city I worked for is openly making comments that they may have to try and contract with the sheriffs office for law enforcement services. They are short also so I dont know how this will work out.

My son is working two overdose deaths that both happened this week. The "Leaders" at the dept told him that the dept, meaning him, "Needs to do something" about the drug house that both dead people bought their drugs from. He shut them up when he pointed out that they shut down the drug unit, not wanting to offend any minorities, when I got off of it and retired almost 7 years ago. They had already ordered me, in writing, to stop writing search warrants before I left.

F em, let it burn.
