This is the first installment of "Campy Sci-Fi" movies :)

It's sci-fi movie time on TB2K. Here are a variety of movies to help kick back from the real world if only for a few hours.
I'm putting each in a separate post. That should make it easier to comment, discuss, or like a specific choice.
If you watch or download a movie, please comment or like to guide future selections.
Click the "movies" tag at the top to see a list of all previous movie threads.
Click on individual movie posters to see them full size.
The movie trailers are located in post #7.

Enjoy the Show!

The first sci-fi movie is Stargate. This 1994 film stars Kurt Russell and James Spader. The TV series SG-1 came 3 years after this movie.

In 1928 Egypt, a strange device is found by an expedition. In the present day, an outcast linguist Dr. Daniel Jackson is invited by a mysterious woman to decipher an ancient hieroglyph in a military facility. Soon he finds that the device was developed by an advanced civilization and opens a portal to another planet. Dr. Jackson joins a military team under the command of Colonel Jonathan 'Jack' O'Neil that will explore the new world. They find a land similar to Egypt and primitive humans that worship and are slaves to Ra, the God of the Sun. But soon they discover the secret of the mysterious "stargate".

They come to protect the humans with four stones of the four elements: fire, water, Earth and air. A Mondoshawan spacecraft is bringing The Fifth Element back to Earth but it is destroyed by the evil Mangalores. However, a team of scientists use the DNA of the remains of the Fifth Element to rebuild the perfect being called Leeloo. She escapes from the laboratory and stumbles upon the taxi driver, and former elite commando, Major Korben Dallas who helps her to escape from the police. Leeloo tells him that she must meet Father Vito Cornelius to accomplish her mission. Meanwhile, the Evil uses the greedy and cruel Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg and a team of mercenary Mangalores to retrieve the stones and avoid the protection of Leeloo. But the skilled Korben Dallas has fallen in love with Leeloo and decides to help her to retrieve the stones.

The fourth sci-fi movie is Invasion of the Body Snatchers. This 1956 film stars Kevin McCarthy, Dana Winters, and Larry Gates.

- A small-town doctor learns that the population of his community is being replaced by emotionless alien duplicates.

Dr. Miles Bennell returns to his small town practice to find several of his patients suffering the paranoid delusion that their friends or relatives are impostors. He is initially skeptical, especially when the alleged doppelgangers are able to answer detailed questions about their victim's lives, but he is eventually persuaded that something odd has happened and determines to find out what is causing this phenomenon.

The fifth sci-fi movie is The Day the World Ended. This 1955 early Roger Corman film stars Richard Denning, Lori Nelson, and Mike Conners. It's an early survivalist film. This one is available on youtube and archive.org.

- In a post-Apocalyptic world after an atomic war, seven disparate people find themselves in a protected valley in the home of a survivalist and his beautiful daughter.

Jim Maddison had been expecting the worst, so when the world is destroyed in a nuclear holocaust, he's made provisions for himself, his daughter Louise and their friend Rick. They have enough supplies to last until the radiation abates but Jim's plans go awry with the unexpected arrival of Tony Lamont and his girlfriend Ruby. Not only does it affect the supply situation but Tony is far too slick and a schemer to be trusted. As the weeks go by however, they soon realize that they also have to face a mutated creature living in the nearby woods.

I haven't seen either Day the World Ended or Thing from Another World (although I suspect my younger sister is the latter) so I'll be watching and reviewing both for posterity.

These are great choices! There's just something about the 1950's Cold War-era sci-fi movies that I love. And of course Stargate is a modern classic.

You found a link for the Fifth Element????? I bow before your greatness!
The movie follows the novel pretty well actually-it was a French sci fi writer who wrote the book. That's why it comes across as a cross between Blade Runner meets Ru Paul and lots of pissed off funky people with weird haircuts and they all go to the opera.A few light years away.......... :) Fantastic movie!

The rest of these look super too. Oh boy, think I've watched more movies off your thread than I have in the past 5 years, because they are all so good!

I kind of wish I didn't have to work-I'd stock up on popcorn and coke zero and binge watch all of them at once. Super selection!

Review: The Day The World Ended.
lessons to be learned;
1-shoot a-holes the instant they show up and save yourself some trouble down the road.
2-Keep your friends close and your burros closer.
3-Make sure you have water pistols on hand for mutants that can't stand H2o

Great movie if you don't mind spending the whole time screamin "shoot him! SHOOT HIM dammit!"

Thanks 1911! Stargate is great! Spawned a whole decade of follow on TV shows that I've watched multiple times. The Fifth Element is also a classic. I had a crush on Leeloo.

Always looking for details I may have missed.
Fantastic choices! Don't know how you keep topping yourself but you do-
Thanks for these!

another great one to watch from the 1950s is When Worlds Collide - 1951 - a rogue planet will destroy the Earth - but another planet will become a new Eden for a small group of Adams & Eves ....

That's definitely a good one. I haven't thought about the older space/sci-fi movies for a few years.
I ran across the first 5 while doing general movie search early this week and they fit the "campy sci-fi" category that had been suggested.

I'll bump this once. There will be more of the campy sci-fi catagory, not sure how often though.

If you aren't aware, click the Movies tag at the top of any movie thread to see every movie thread that has been posted.
Not all are still available, but most are available to watch now.
