A note from behind the scenes:

Interest in the movie threads has dropped and Halloween (plus the week before) felt almost ignored.
40 hours of work to find, sort, and present 32 movies for 2 weekends of Halloween.
It's true that no one asked me to go all out for Halloween. It was bad judgement.
Don't expect that level of effort again, for any reason or season.

Lots of thread views with very few likes or comments means I'm doing something wrong.

It's movie time on TB2K again. Here are a variety of movies to help kick back from the real world if only for a few hours.
I'm putting each in a separate post. That should make it easier to comment, discuss, or like a specific choice.
If you watch or download a movie, please comment or like it to guide future selections.
Click the "movies" tag at top to see a list of previous movie threads.

The movie trailers are located in post #8.

Enjoy the Show!

The first movie is The Longest Yard. This 1974 prison comedy stars Burt Reynolds, Eddie Albert, and Ed Lauter.

A sadistic warden asks a former pro quarterback, now serving time in his prison, to put together a team of inmates to take on (and get pummeled by) the guards. The pummel part goes both ways...

The third movie is Hombre. This 1967 Western stars Paul Newman, Fredric March, and Richard Boone.

Pale-skinned, blue-eyed, but reared by the fearsome Apache Indians, taciturn John Russell is a white man who has embraced the ways of his fellow Apaches. When his father dies--leaving him a boarding house--John finds himself in a dusty stagecoach along with a mismatched septet of passengers, including his Mexican-American friend, Mendez; landlady, Jessie, and the brutal Cicero Grimes, after deciding to sell the property. Before long, the travelers will show their true colors, unbeknownst to them, however, that ruthless bandits have set their sights on robbing them. Now, the only person who stands between the murderous cut-throats and the helpless commuters is John; a man of few words who knows how to handle his deadly rifle. Is Hombre their only chance of survival?

The fourth movie is Von Ryan's Express. This 1965 war adventure stars Frank Sinatra, Trevor Howard, and Raffaella Carra`.

Ryan, an American POW, leads his fellow prisoners on a dangerous escape from the Germans in Italy. Having seemingly made errors of judgment, Ryan has to win the support of the mainly British soldiers he is commanding.

The fifth movie is The Spy Who Came In from the Cold. This 1965 cold war thriller stars Richard Burton, Oskar Werner, and Clair Bloom.

Veteran British espionage Agent Alec Leamas (Richard Burton) is ready to quit the espionage game and take on a desk job, to "come in out of the cold". He is given one last mission, and it's an incredibly dangerous and complex one. By posing as a disillusioned former British Agent, he is to be recruited by the East German Secret Police, in the hope of planting seeds of doubt as to the loyalty of its head. The stakes are high and the risks great.

Aww I'm a Huge Fan 1911, and always appreciate everything you do. If ever that is abundantly clear, the fault is entirely my own, and I apologize.

Think this week I'll try the spy in from the cold...art imitating real life in a way ; )

In all fairness, I don't think it was anything meant against you. Folk here had (have still) very serious real world issues that they were, and still are, dealing with.

You are providing a valuable service here, allowing us to escape (for a limited time anyway) into the world of make believe. Please don't stop.

Thank you. I always remember Fahrenheit 451 and suspect I am preserving these films for future generations.

Sam Whisky Plot

Sam Whiskey (Burt Reynolds), an adventurer and rogue in the Old West, is seduced by widow Laura Breckenridge (Angie Dickinson) into promising to retrieve $250,000 in gold bars from a riverboat that sank in Colorado's Platte River. The gold had been stolen by Laura's late husband from the Denver Mint and replaced by plated lead fakes. She offers Sam $20,000 to recover and return it before the theft is discovered and her family name is ruined. Sam enlists the help of Jedidiah Hooker (Ossie Davis), a local blacksmith, and O. W. Bandy (Clint Walker), an Army friend turned inventor, offering them shares of the reward.

They locate the sunken riverboat, unaware that they are being watched by Fat Henry Hobson (Rick Davis) and his gang. The gold is fifteen feet below the river's surface, so Bandy fashions a diving helmet for Sam out of a bucket and bellows, but Fat Henry and his gang capture Jed and Bandy. Thinking they have drowned Sam, hiding in the riverboat's smokestack, they recover the gold and prepare to kill their captives. With the help of one of Bandy's homemade machine guns, Sam frees his partners and they start for Denver with the gold. Just as they are tempted at a crossroads to head for Mexico with their haul, Laura shows up to greet them.

Assuming the identity of a government inspector, Sam enters the mint and deliberately damages a gold-plated bronze bust of George Washington displayed in the lobby. He then insists on having it repaired and takes it to a blacksmith's shop, where Jed makes a mold of the bust and recasts the recovered gold. Fat Henry later breaks into the shop and steals the bronze original, thinking that it was made by Sam and his men to disguise the pilfered bars. Sam returns the new bust to the mint, and his men, posing as plumbers, conceal themselves until nightfall when they meltdown the bust and recast it into gold bars. On a train leaving Denver the next morning, Sam splits the $20,000 with Jed and Bandy but keeps Laura for himself.

I apologize for not being more forthcoming in my appreciation. Your efforts have been fruitful, and I've collected a bunch of movies I otherwise would not have gotten. In these times it's been great to go back and watch the old classics, particularly pre-CGI, when actors acted.

I for one have very much enjoyed your efforts, both for the board and for some items you helped me find personally. Thank you very much!

As I work in one city and live in another I barely have time to get online to read let alone comment. Except for this summer when I was off injured. Think of the praise you get as the tip of the iceberg.

I save the movies on external hard drives to watch later. Some I keep on the computer to watch on the aircraft as I travel. Your choices are far better than anything provided by the airlines. Thank You!

Hard times is an exceptionally good movie.

To be honest, I thought this week's movies were among the best week ever for overall quality, style, etc. So what if they are about 50 years old, they're still good. You are right Shadow, Hard Times is an exceptional movie if you are a Charles Bronson fan. I should have described better. It was almost first on the list, but I thought a comedy would be a better lead movie in these times.

I thought of another reason for fewer comments/likes. External search engines quickly pick up every thread posted on main. When thread views on a movie thread get into the thousands, a good part of those are almost certainly from outside TB2K.

I remember when DH and I were dating and went to Murray, KY where both The Longest Yard and Death Wish were playing. Although I was a little disappointed we(he) decided to see The Longest Yard but I was so glad we did. To this day I still haven’t seen Death Wish LOL.

I was an extra in the stadium during the filming of the football game. The local radio station put out a call for people to show up at the stadium because they needed to fill portions of the stands for back ground. I guess you can imagine how many girls showed up! Burt Reynolds came out on the sidelines and most the girls left their seats and followed where he went. They had to ask him to come back to the middle of the field so we would all come back to where they could film us as the game spectators. He was such a poser. He laid on his side on the ground flexing his muscles looking like all sexy. So funny remembering that day. Thanks for posting this movie.
