There are 7 movies this week.
I recommend watching or saving these sooner rather than later.

This thread on MAIN has the info about the movies and is the place for discussion about them, as before.
However, all of the movie and download links are located in a separate,
members-only, thread in the MEDIA CENTER at this link:

----------->>> Link to the thread containing the actual movie links <<<-----------

This should help protect the source of the movies and keep them available longer.

If you watch or download a movie, please comment or like to guide future selections.
Click the "movies" tag at top to see a list of previous movie threads.

Movie trailers (from youtube) can be found in post #8 of this thread.
Click the "movies" tag at the top of this thread to see a list of all movies posted in the past.

Enjoy the Show!

The first movie this week is The Departed. This 2006 Martin Scorsese crime drama stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon, and Mark Wahlburg.

- An undercover cop and a mole in the police attempt to identify each other while infiltrating an Irish gang in South Boston.

A tale of two cops, though on different sides of the law. Colin Sullivan (played by Matt Damon) is a Massachusetts State police detective. He has risen through the ranks to head up a special department. Public Enemy Number 1 is Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson), a crime network kingpin, and Sullivan's main target. However, Sullivan is a paid informant for Costello, giving him tip-offs on police raids and other useful information. Meanwhile, Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) works for Costello. However, he is actually an undercover policeman, spying on Costello. In due course, both know that there is a rat in their organization, but don't know their identity. A deadly cat-and-mouse game ensues, with both trying to uncover the other without being discovered themselves.

The third movie is Brannigan. This 1975 crime comedy/drama stars John Wayne, Richard Attenborough, Judy Geeson, and Mel Ferrer. The Duke goes to London!

Jim Brannigan is sent to London to bring back an American mobster who is being held for extradition, but when he arrives, he has been kidnapped, which was set up by his lawyer. Brannigan, in his American Irish way, brings American law to the people of Scotland Yard in order to recapture this mobster with a price tag on his head and a stuffy old London cop with whom to contend.

The fifth movie is Stargate. This 1994 sci-fi adventure stars Kurt Russell, James Spader, Jaye Davidson, and Viveca Lindfors.

In 1928 Egypt, a strange device is found by an expedition. In the present day, an outcast linguist Dr. Daniel Jackson is invited by a mysterious woman to decipher an ancient hieroglyph in a military facility. Soon he finds that the device was developed by an advanced civilization and opens a portal to another planet. Dr. Jackson joins a military team under the command of Colonel Jonathan 'Jack' O'Neil that will explore the new world. They find a land similar to Egypt and primitive humans that worship and are slaves to Ra, the God of the Sun. But soon they discover the secret of the mysterious "stargate".

The sixth movie is And Now For Something Completely Different. This 1971 comedy is an anthology of the best sketches from the first and second seasons of Monty Python's Flying Circus (1969).

Featuring the best of the well-known sketches from the first and the second season of the incomparable British comedy-sketch show, Monty Python's Flying Circus (1969), this witty compilation film is Monty Python's attempt to break into the United States audience. Including hilarious classic skits such as the "Dirty Hungarian Phrasebook", "Defence Against Fresh Fruit", "The Dead Parrot", "The Lumberjack Song", "The Dirty Fork", and of course, "The Funniest Joke in the World", this wacky anthology is, indeed, the beginner's guide to the spectacular, surreal, and mad world of the Monty Python. Now, brace yourselves up for something completely different.

The seventh movie is Colossus: The Forbin Project. This 1970 dystopian film is very hard to find, but a member found it! Download and/or watch quickly. It's in the links with the other movies (first post of this thread).

Thinking this will prevent war, the US government gives an impenetrable supercomputer total control over launching nuclear missiles. But what the computer does with the power is unimaginable to its creators.

I intend to watch Colossus: The Forbin Project sometime this week. It sounds like "skynet" from Terminator.

I bought the original hollywierd manuscript of this movie off Ebay 15 years or so ago for $45.
Really cool, has all the notes, actor changes, script changes noted in the margins. My son is a Stargate fan.

The real prize this week is Colossus The Forbin Project. It's a rare find and a good, thought-provoking film. Even in 1970, there were some who were not sure it was a good idea to let a computer control everything.

The other surprise was Nomadland. If the name sounds familiar, it won the big Oscar awards recently. In spite of the oscar wins in the current political climate, I searched and found no evidence of it being woke, racial, or having other disqualifying issues. I have not watched it yet. It became available Friday morning and I took a chance posting it last night. I thought someone traveling around the US and living in a van, like a nomad, would be of interest to some here.

That’s exactly what it is. And the key was surveillance. The computer had everything and everyone under total surveillance. If you think of a computer-controlled “Enemy Of The State” or “Person of Interest”, you’d be dead on. And because of it, it’s impossible to mount a cohesive defense plan to deactivate it.

I couldn’t find a streaming copy, so I had to buy it on DVD.

Colossus: The Forbin Project was rather popular among students at science/engineering schools back in the day.

Colossus is ours. It detects the Russian equivalent, Guardian, I think, and demands to be put in contact with it. Together, they enforce whirled peas, or else.

I watched Nomadland last night (rented on Amazon).

Ugh. Depressing. Sure the scenery was great, but we all know how great western scenery is. Bottom line, when she finds herself living out of a van, (the allusion is by choice) and it craps out to the tune of $2300, she is left to beg a loan from and go stay with her sister and family. Then work somewhere at an Amazon distribution center for a couple months/year to pay it back. Oh..and this is a woman who carries no spare tire and doesn't know how to change one.
Hmmm....guess it shows what not to do. Not a sustainable thing.

Thank you for Nomadland. Gave me a lot to think about. I now live in a small but sunny part of my house, with DS and family having most of the rest of the house as their space. At the last years of my life, enjoying less stuff and more richness in quality of life, prayer, and gardening. Lots of other friends my age doing much the same, but in a very personal way.
