First up this weekend is the SWISS FAMILY ROBINSON. This 1960 Disney movie is fun and practical if you find yourself shipwrecked on a tropical island.

- A Swiss family must survive being shipwrecked on a deserted island.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

The 2nd feature is John Carpenters 1982 version of THE THING with Kurt Russell. This is a good thriller/action film, but it can get a little scary and bloody at times.

- Some things should be left frozen in the antarctic ice.

- A research team in Antarctica is hunted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of its victims.

The 3rd feature is SILVER BULLET from 1985. This fun film has Gary Busey and Corey Haim just trying to enjoy 4th of July fireworks except a werewolf keeps killing people in the nice midwest town of Tarker Mills. This really is a fun film and a personal favorite.

- The last full moon of that Spring came a little more than a month before school let out for Summer vacation. Our town's long nightmare began that night.

The media player at archive.org selects a lower quality version of this particular move for some reason. The click-to-watch link for this one goes directly to the high quality version. Your browser may start playing the movie or ask you to save it.

I forgot the 4th feature, especially for Halloween, THE NIGHT FLIER. This 1997 adaptation of a Steven King short story stars Miguel Ferrer as a reporter on the trail of a vampire who flies from small airport to small airport. This is a good story. It builds tension through the movie. There is some gore and blood.

-A reporter is on the trail of a vampiric murderer who travels by plane.

Hmmm. Today's fare has been House of Flying Daggers; on to the Postman right now; and later I'll start Vikings, season 1.

This too shall pass.
I have to tell you that I hated that Swiss Family Robinson movie. I had already read the book when I saw the movie (I think I saw the movie in about 1965) and the movie is only barely based on the story in the book! I suppose for someone who has never read the book, it might be okay.

I added a 4th movie - The Night Flier in honor of halloween. Details are in the first post.

Freeholder: I enjoyed the 1960 Swiss Family Robinson movie and have read the book.
Books and movies are rarely identical and usually fail miserably when they try to be identical.
Books and movies are good for different reasons.
Here is a link to the 1940 version of swiss family robinson you might like better: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bb9K6seBchU

That was the first movie I ever saw (growing up on a homestead in the middle of Alaska -- we saw Swiss Family Robinson at a community movie night, with the picture thrown onto a white wall at the local all-grades school). I had no idea that movies would be different from the books, and was so disillusioned! (I was about eight or maybe nine.) I'll look at the earlier version and see if it's better -- thanks!

Just starting the 1940 version of Swiss Family Robinson, and shaking my head and laughing! I may enjoy the movie, but so far nothing I've seen is even in the story.

One of the things that I liked about the Lord of the Rings movies was that, while they had to cut things in order to keep them down in length, what they kept was pretty true to the books.

Oh, well, I guess I'm a purist!

How about the 1995 version of Swiss Family Robinson with Jane Seymour, James Keach, and David Carradine? :)

There is a prequel to the Kurt Russell remake of "The Thing". It ends with the scene of the helicopter chasing the dog, the scene that opens the Kurt Russell version.

As far as I can tell, this movie is also titled "The Thing" and on the back of the box it is referred to as "prelude" rather than "prequel".

It was made in 2010 and runs 1 hr. 43 min.

Swiss Family Robinson was a Disney film. There’s no such thing as a Disney film that follows a book. Ever. But at your age at the time, you wouldn’t know that.

No, and like I said, I'd never seen a movie before that one. And haven't seen all that many since. I still like my movies to follow the books they were taken from, but having had some experience now with a community theater I do understand that sometimes things need to be cut or changed.

Have you seen the films Dances With Wolves and Dune? Each of those films has a 3 hour theatrical version, and a 4 hour extended version. In both films, the 4 hour versions closely followed the respective books, while the 3 hour version not so much.

This is an IMDB info link for it: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0905372/ (The Thing (2011))

This is the only full youtube link I could find. It's one where the video only shows on half the screen as camouflage and the title name is changed to help hide the true video inside. It is HD quality, just smaller than normal.
Also, some audio parts are Norwegian with no subtitles and the rest English. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtyvWiDCtmI (1hr 43min)

It'll fit right in. Just patch together a rainbow flag to put over the nest. Gawd, how the times have changed.

The first time I saw SFR was on an old black and white Philco in my living room. Years later, I saw it in color. I agree, the book is better but these old movies have a sweet innocence that is completely lacking today. The old stuff is like sweet pure clear water.

Sorry I didn't get back earlier to answer about that third Thing movie. I couldn't have given a link as I only know about it because I found it a Walmart some time ago, a couple of years maybe, and bought it. It's true that there is quite a bit of it in Norwegian, but it's not too hard to figure out roughly what they are saying.

Movie trailers and the posters are nice additions, I think. It helps capture the set and setting, and brings something of history to the thread.

Hey thanks for the Swiss Family Robinson link. My daughter and I watched it last night. Right after that she was writing down all the traps she wants to make, ha.

I did see Dances with Wolves; didn’t know there was a book. I think I’ve seen bits of Dune in passing; read the book a long time ago. Never knew that about different versions of the movies. I prefer the books over the movies in most cases, with a few rare exceptions. The author of a book can tell the reader things that are more difficult to convey in a film. Also, a book carries the author’s voice, while movies tend to be made by a committee (at least to some extent).

LOL! When I read Swiss Family Robinson as a child, I wanted to build the treehouse! I also wanted the pinnace, or at least the kayak. We lived on the edge of a lake and were on the water as much as possible, but our boats were heavy and clumsy compared to those.

I'll keep doing the movie trailers. The movie posters are a given. I have fun with them. Between those and the IMDB movie info/review link, people should have a decent idea of what to expect with a film.

Freeholder, did the male ostrich lay any more eggs in the 1940 swiss family robinson?
