It's the end of the world as we know it this weekend. Enjoy the show. :popcorn3:

-------------------------------------------

First up is Steven King's THE STAND from 1994. Yes, the full 4 night mini-series clocking in at almost 6 hours, but no commercials and it's bluray quality (720p). Captain Tripps is back along with Tom (MOON :)) and the gang of survivors.

- After a deadly plague kills most of the world's population, the remaining survivors split into two groups - one led by a benevolent elder and the other by a maleficent being - to face each other in a final battle between good and evil.

The opening of this video should have the wonderfully appropriate song Don't Fear the Reaper, but it's been cut out. Otherwise, the entire video would have been immediately flagged by youtube. There are two options: first just watch and accept no sound from 3:45 to 7:07. The better option IMHO is to pause the video at 3:45, open the song link below, start the song, then jump back and start the video again. Then you'll see the very good opening scene as intended. Make sure you have autoplay turned off on youtube so it will stop after playing the song. It's worth a little effort - play the song :)

-------------------------------------------

The second feature is DAMNATION ALLEY from 1977 starring the Landmaster, George Peppard, and Jan Michael Vincent. This is widescreen in bluray quality!

- A small group of survivors at a military installation who survived World War 3 attempt to drive across the desolate wasteland to where they hope more survivors are living.
- Hopefully their specially built vehicles will protect them against the freakish weather, mutated plant and animal life, and other dangers along the way.

-------------------------------------------

Last up is 1983 nuclear classic THE DAY AFTER from ABC TV years ago.

- The effects of a devastating nuclear holocaust on small-town residents of eastern Kansas.
- This movie is still just as powerful in 2019. THIS is a real horror movie.

Just don't watch 'Threads' looking for any prep inspiration, the 80's anti-nuke movie
produced by the BBC, acclaimed to have traumatized a generation is a real bummer.

Yes, early part, the political lead up and nuke bombing of cities, fairly realistic...

...but a totally demoralizing movie without redeemable example of anybody
doing the right things to have had survived, thus civilization doomed forever.

I haven't seen "Damnation Alley" in years and I still get the shudders over those damned carnivorous cockroaches! If you're seriously into the idea of the Grand Solar Minimum and a new ice age, here's a movie with that theme:

Ice (1998, 1:46:07 although video isn't right, credits come at about 1:25:00 then it starts over again partway through the movie) - when the Sun reduces its output it starts snowing in Los Angeles and just doesn't stop, I really like this one although I still can't figure out why the bad guy scientist is apparently an Aryan German who actually waves a Luger around at one point, this always struck me as a pilot for a TV series that never aired

the US had their own "Threads" during the same early 80s nuke horror period - never got the recognition due to ABC's big Day After marketing >>> Testament (1983)

(links snipped)

Here it is Illini, a link to a full version of Testament (1983) on archive.org. The quality is OK. As Shane said, it's not a movie to be making a nuke prep list while watching.

No Don’t Fear the Reaper intro...

I know, that intro was very well done and sets the mood for the mini-series. It's one of the best uses I've seen for that song. That's why I put together the details of adding it back with only a little bit of effort. :chg:

Not a fan of Stephen king but the day after AND threads on the same bill? Now that is serious doom porn!!! Exceptionally good movie selections!
Any chance of finding the original Fail Safe movie,or better yet the original Manchurian Candidate movie? Dedicate it to Tulsi gabbard perhaps...

No shit? Wonder if that had anything to do with his being hit by that van.

It's fairly close to common knowledge; google "Stephen King" and "cocaine" and you'll get a horde of articles on the topic. It's been said he actually doesn't remember writing some of the biggest books he wrote.

Reading some of them, it's not surprising.

I couldn't find Fail Safe or the original Manchurian Candidate where I could show it here. Youtube has both for a few dollars rental.

Another that would be great to post is The Trigger Effect (1997), but it is not available. It would generate quite a bit of discussion. I just post the (hopefully) good ones that I can find.

Ah, The Trigger Effect. DGIs spend a while trying to get it, then kind of get it, but then the emergency passes.

I have the DVD and you've at least seen it. Think of the discussion that would be generated by those who have never seen it. :)

The pharmacy bit alone is a winner. Me personally, I wonder if they end up doing anything different after the whole thing, like sell their house in LA and moving out to some country home.

I love it for the very casual throwaway line of dialogue about how the outage was maybe caused by a solar flare, but that possibility is never followed up on in the movie.

It won’t play. Just keeps spinning the circle of death.

:(

I just checked, all 3 still work for me. If you are running a java-script blocker (like I do), you have to allow "youtube" then allow "google video". Those are the only 2 javascript that I allow for using youtube.

Can you view other youtube videos? It so, try the direct movie link as well.

And you are doing a FABULOUS job of doing it! I cannot believe you found Testament-like Amerika, I'd been looking for that one for a while. Downloading it as I type.

There are two good doom movies you may wish to consider for this most excellent thread. One is Countdown to Looking Glass, the other is Special Report. Both are nuke scenarios from the early 80's and both will scare your pants off with the scenarios presented. They're just a touch too plausible for just being movies.

Thanks for this great movie thread!

Countdown to Looking Glass (1984) (1 hour 27 min) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knSSUEdLcvg (this is at 240p resolution which is low, but audio is fine)

Special Bulletin (1983) (1 hour 40 min) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDZQsVNZ3SE (this is a pretty good resolution at 480p and audio is fine)

Actually, I was able to watch The Day After movie. It just finished.

But I tried The Stand at least three times and gave up. Either way, “the day after” was awesome!!

On and On, South of Heaven
A wow... What a trifecta.

I never saw The Stand but it is one of the handful of fiction novels I have read and I have to say that I enjoyed it quite a bit.

When I was a kid, The Day After Tomorrow had all the neighborhood kids freaked out...

What I found was that most Stephen King movies start great, and build pretty good. But they almost always have a lame ending that brings me great disappointment.

For those interested in The Stand, you should watch it soon and/or download it from youtube if you can.

It is still up, but I don't know how much longer it will be available.

The person who posted The Stand has had their previous youtube channel closed in the last day or 2. Due to that closing, the movies Shoot to Kill, Avenger, and The 2nd Civil War from previous weekends are no longer available.
The Stand is posted on his new channel and is subject to also being closed at any time. It had been up for 6 days when I posted it here. His other channel had been up for several months, but you should watch The Stand soon if you plan to.

I'll post a new link if I find another source for the stand with good quality video.

Funny you mention that. It was alluded to in the recent It pt 2. And speaking of let downs, that movie certainly was.
