It's movie time on TB2K again. Here are a variety of movies to help kick back from the real world if only for a few hours.
I'm putting each in a separate post. That should make it easier to comment, discuss, or like a specific choice.
The movie mix comes from youtube and archive.org. I doubt that will change in the future.
Click the "movies" tag at top to see a list of previous movie threads.
Click on an individual movie poster to see it full size.
The movie trailers are located in post #6.

Enjoy the Show!

First up this week is SOLO: A Star Wars Story. The 2018 film traces the younger years of Han Solo.

Before he crossed paths with The Rebellion, Han Solo was a former Imperial Militant who became a space pirate cruising around the Outer Rim alongside his fellow outlaw: the mighty Wookiee, Chewbacca. This is the story of how he came to be known as the galaxy's most notorious smuggler, and how the man became a legend.

The second film is Gone With The Wind. This 1939 war of northern aggression epic is uncut and almost 4 hours long. It stars Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Leslie Howard, and Olivia deHavilland.

In the face of the imminent U.S. Civil War, the pampered socialite and petulant Southern Belle, Scarlett O'Hara, basks in the limelight, enjoying a lavish lifestyle. Knowing that the rich and red-hued soil of Tara--the ancestral cotton plantation in Georgia--is the only thing worth fighting for, the resilient woman will do everything in her power to control her destiny; including marrying the wrong men to maintain her enviable social status. However, death seems to follow Scarlett--and as she swears never to be poor again, standing on the sparkling ashes of her beloved but burned-to-the-ground home--the cynical playboy, Rhett Butler, offers a way out, and a new lease of life. Headstrong, passionate, and, above all, resolute, not even war--or death--can stand in Scarlett's way; nevertheless, love is delicate and elusive, and, somehow, it is always one step ahead of her. Has Scarlett's noble aspiration for a better future gone with the wind?

The third film is We're No Angels. This 1955 comedy stars Humphrey Bogart, Peter Ustinov, Aldo Ray, and Joan Bennett. This was suggested by member Grouchy Granny in discussion about The Maltese Falcon posted two weeks ago.

Three convicts escape from Devil's Island and arrive at a nearby French colonial town. Initially they plan to steal supplies and clothing from the local store, but they take a liking to the store owner's family (more specifically his attractive daughter) and decide to stay and help them overcome many difficulties.

The fourth film is The Glen Miller Story. This 1954 film about the famous band leader stars Jimmy Stewart, June Allyson, and Harry Morgan (col. potter from MASH).

The unemployed trombone player Glenn Miller is always broke, chasing his sound to form his band and hocking his instrument in the pawn shop to survive. When his friend is hired to play in the Ben Pollack band, the band-leader listens to one of Glenn's composition and invites him to join his band. While traveling to New York, Glenn visits his former girlfriend in Boulder, Colorado and asks her to wait for him. Two years later he quits the band and proposes that she move to New York to marry him. After the success of "Moonlight Serenade", Glenn Miller's band becomes known worldwide then Glenn and his family have a very comfortable life. During World War II, Glenn enlists in the army and travels to Europe to increase the moral of the allied troops. In Christmas of 1944, he travels from London to Paris for a concert to be broadcast; however his plane is never found.

- Biography of bandleader Glenn Miller from his beginnings to his death over the English Channel in December 1944.

The fifth film is Icon. This 2005 action thriller stars Patrick Swayze, Jeff Fahey, Patrick Bergan, and Michael York. This is loosely based on the Frederick Forsyth novel Icon. I've read several of Forsyth's books in the past; he's good. Most memorable for me was The Dogs of War written in the mid 1970's. This movie was made for TV, but was well done and the views of Moscow are spectacular. This was made 4 years before Swayze died from cancer (pancreatic). He was 52 when this was made; pretty spry for an older guy :) (watch the trailer for this one)

I enjoyed many of his films. RIP Patrick.

On the eve of the elections in Russia, there's an outbreak of a mysterious disease. The British are curious to find out what's going on, so they need to send someone. An official knows someone, Jason Monk, an American Agent who worked deep cover in Russia during the Cold War. He approaches Monk, who initially refuses till he tells Monk that he can help him settle some old scores and to see his daughter whom he left when he was pulled out. So Monk goes and makes contact with an old friend and a Russian policewoman. They learn that someone is trying to manipulate the election.

We're No Angels was as good as it got for Aldo Ray. He was better than he got credit for, and sort of crashed and burned at the end.

On TB every waking moment
They tried hard with Solo but I suppose there is just no way to rediscover terrain that has already been so well mapped and trodden. And sadly abused.

But The Glenn Miller Story made me feel much much better. Now THAT was a movie.

As an aside, this cartoon stayed up by my desk at work for years ...

I agree the Star Wars franchise is mostly broken now. At least we have the originals.

I've learned that anything with Jimmy Stewart will be good. He was a legend for many good reasons.
