First up this weekend is ROUGH RIDERS. This 1997 mini-series is about Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders in the 1898 Spanish American war. It stars Tom Berenger, Sam Elliot, Gar Busey, Brian Keith, and others. It was directed and co-written by John Milius (Red Dawn, Wind and the Lion, etc.). The 2 part series (3 hours total) is closer to a 1960's war epic than a TV mini-series. One note is the audio loses synchronization with the video noticeably for the last 10 minutes of the first part. You can still understand what is happening, but you hear the words just a few seconds late.

- In 1898, the U.S. Government decided to intervene on the side of the Cuban rebels in their struggle against Spanish rule. Assistant Navy Secretary Theodore Roosevelt decides to experience the war first hand by promoting and joining a volunteer cavalry regiment. The regiment, later known as the Rough Riders, brings together volunteers from all corners of the nation and all walks of life. When Roosevelt and his men finally land on Cuba, they face ambush, intense enemy fire, and a desperate, outnumbered charge up a defended hill.

The 2nd movie is SERENITY. This 2005 film is based on further adventures of the tragically short-lived, but much beloved, TV show Firefly. If you have not seen Firefly, it's OK. The movie Serenity explains the history when needed. Firefly and Serenity are personal favorites.

- In the future, a spaceship called Serenity is harboring a passenger with a deadly secret. Six rebels on the run. An assassin in pursuit. When the renegade crew of Serenity agrees to hide a fugitive on their ship, they find themselves in an awesome action-packed battle between the relentless military might of a totalitarian regime who will destroy anything - or anyone - to get the girl back and the bloodthirsty creatures who roam the uncharted areas of space. But, the greatest danger of all may be on their ship.

The 3rd feature is CHERRY 2000. This 1987 film stars a young Melanie Griffith, David Andrews, Ben Johnson. In the future, androids are common for love machines. The best of the best were the Cherry's.

- This was mostly filmed in, and over, the Hoover dam area. Some of the stunt scenes are certifiably crazy. This is a fun film from the crazy 80's and another personal favorite.
- The "master of the wasteland" Tim Thomerson almost steals the entire movie with his scenes; absolutely hilarious!

- In 2017, Sam Treadwell lives in a society where romance, economics and technology have evolved into a state where relationships of all sorts are commodities. When he damages his animatronic wife, Cherry 2000, he hires E. Johnson (Melanie Griffith), to guide him across a dangerous apocalyptic wasteland to an abandoned manufacturing warehouse where he hopes to find a duplicate model. Driving through the desert, they encounter Lester, the tyrannical overlord of the wasteland, before they manage to escape from him and his henchmen. Along their journey, Sam discovers that the perfect woman is real flesh and blood.

The 4th movie is RED SUN. This 1971 western stars Charles Bronson and Toshiro Mifune.

-The Japanese ambassador is traveling through the Wild West by train, when gangsters hold up the train, to rob a gold shipment. They also carry an ancient Japanese sword the ambassador was carrying as a present for the US president. The ambassador's bodyguard (Toshiro Mifune) will go after them, with the aid of one of the gang's leaders betrayed by his pals...

The final film is BROKEN ARROW. This 1950 western stars James Stewart.

- By 1870, there has been 10 years of cruel war between settlers and Cochise's Apaches. Ex-soldier Tom Jeffords saves the life of an Apache boy and starts to wonder if Indians are human, after all; soon, he determines to use this chance to make himself an ambassador. Against all odds, his solitary mission into Cochise's stronghold opens a dialogue. Opportunely, the president sends General Howard with orders to conclude peace. But even with Jeffords's luck, the deep grievance and hatred on both sides make tragic failure all too likely.

Summer Glau is...
Interesting

Agreed.

So is Shepherd Book. I'd hoped they'd do his backstory in a second movie or something.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Zoë: “Preacher, don’t the Bible have some pretty specific things to say about killin’?”

Book: “Quite specific. It is, however, somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps.”

How could I not watch Serenity again? New site software and archived movie worked very well.

Watched Rough Riders for the first time ever. Two movies in two days is almost unheard of for me :D

I was MOST impressed. Casting was excellent, whoever was armorer did an excellent job (they ran the credits so fast I didn't see). Haven't really enjoyed an attempt at recreating history so much in a very long time. I am too nitpicky to like most such efforts, but they did enough detail right (TR's spare glasses in his hat, and his Winchester 1895 lever action for example), not to mention more .30-40 Krags than I have ever seen in one place, Colt potato digger machine guns (JMBrowning's first machine gun), the big bore (I think one pounder) revolving Hotchkiss, the little Hotchkiss mountain guns (two pounders IIRC)- someone worked hard to recreate all that.

Kudos to the production company!

I recall a very *serious* fanboy subgroup among the membership here of Cherry2000, lol

I've already admitted my bias towards the movie. I have many personal favorites, but Cherry 2000 is in the top 100.

They should still work with the "retro read-only" site, correct? If not, I'll redo the list using the new site link format.

You should check this youtube channel, they uploaded the mini-series. They have many other civil war 1 and up through early 1900's historical type videos.
https://www.youtube.com/user/Lionheart1864/featured

If you've never seen The Wind and the Lion (1975 - also involving John Milius - writer/director for Rough Riders), you really, really should. It gets many things Teddy Roosevelt correct including weapons of the time period.
I will definitely post it if I can find a good, and safe, source.

I downloaded the film from youtube. These 2 screen clips from the credits might help.
