First up is OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN from 2013. Terrorists attack the white house and take the president hostage. They forgot about one man. This is a serious action movie. This has asian subtitles, but with the cinema widescreen format, they are easy to ignore since most are in the black bar below the video.

- Disgraced Secret Service agent Mike Banning finds himself trapped inside the White House in the wake of a terrorist attack and works with national security to rescue the President from his kidnappers.

- When the Flag falls, a Nation will Rise

OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN 2013 is a great movie.
Tons of action and an interesting premise.
The initial assault is insane.

In honor of Veteran's Day this week, the 2nd movie is THE HURT LOCKER. This 2008 movie is a look at the war in Iraq as seen by an EOD group. EOD checks out and disables any suspected bombs or explosive traps which were common. This is an intense film that gets gritty at times. It also won 6 academy awards including best picture. I think enough of this picture that it gets *2* movie posters instead of the normal 1 per movie :)

- During the Iraq War, a Sergeant recently assigned to an army bomb squad is put at odds with his squad mates due to his maverick way of handling his work.
- War is a Drug
- You don't have to be a hero to do this job. But it helps.

Everybody rags on Hurt Locker but I thought it was very good...

The 3rd feature is the comedy western MY NAME IS NOBODY from 1973.

- A young, easygoing gunman (Terrance Hill) worships and competes with an old gunfighter (Henry Fonda) who only wants to retire.

- Jack Beauregard, once the greatest gunslinger of the Old West, only wants to move to Europe and retire in peace, but a young gunfighter, known only as "Nobody," idolizes him and wants to see him go out in a blaze of glory. He arranges for Jack to face the 150-man gang known as The Wild Bunch and earn his place in history.

Good cowboy flick, very humorous

Last is STALAG 17, the classic WW2 prison camp comedy/drama from Billy Wilder in 1953. There is a German spy among the allied prisoners. Who is it?

- Nobody has ever escaped from Stalag 17. Not alive, anyway
- When two escaping American World War II prisoners are killed, the German P.O.W. camp barracks black marketeer (William Holden) is suspected of being an informer.

Stalag 17 was the (very rough) basis for Hogan’s Heroes.

@1911user Thank you so much for posting these. I'm not on nearly as much as I used to be and rarely post anymore. But I do check to see what movies you have. Most I've heard of, some I've seen, some not. But with the synopsis and links, I go back and rewatch or even better, I discover a whole new (to me) film. Again, much thanks!!

There is a sort of sequel to "Olympus Has Fallen". It is "London Has Fallen" and has the same main character and is also a pretty good movie.

Thanks for the links, I think.

Never saw Olympus has fallen. Got 26 minutes into it when I threw up and had to walk away. Laptop almost got chunked across the room..........The herky bird crashing on the Ellipse was enough, more than enough. Holy sh*t !!!!!!!! And the F-22's are out of Langley AFB (FF tail codes). For a DC ADIZ intercept it would be MD ANG F-16's doing the intercept. And they would use AMRAAMs,not sidewinders. The flares from the herky bird would be useless.

Think I'll get something to steady my nerves; still shaking a bit.

Several friends from GOTX board provided gear and personnel (and skills) to Hurt Locker. IIRC Mookie Spicoli (Ben Thomas) was in more than one scene

Oh, AlfaMan! Sorry you're so upset! Pour yourself something amber on ice and be calm. Most of us, we Americans, wouldn't know accuracy if it landed on OUR lawn!

We just want to watch a fun movie!

LOL - I think a thoughtful person like you are guilty of expecting a level of accuracy that you are never going to get from any Hollywood movie.

I waited for the week of Veteran's Day to post The Hurt Locker. It's a little too close to going to war than some are comfortable watching.

Thanks, it was a major league panic attack. I got 100% accuracy on a beautiful clear September day about 18 years ago, except it was across the river and into the Pentagon. Think that's what did it. Same anxiety, The scenes triggered the same fear, same fight or flee reflex. Good thing there was a trash can beside my recliner. It just hit a wee bit too close to home, I guess. Sorry about talking about it; talking does help.

I remember seeing Tom Clancy's Sum of all Fears shortly after 9/11. Maybe 6 months after it, do remember it was in the theater. Ran out of that theatre couldn't breathe, puking my guts out. I wasn't the only one.

I love the choices, 1911 user. You've put out some exceptional movies to watch. For some reason that one just weirded me out. Sorry.

We watched Olympus Has Fallen and immediately followed it up with Conspiracy Theory. What a night. Scariest part of OHF is when the Speaker of the House has to assume the Presidency. I could only think of Nancy Pee. A nightmare.:sht: You can see why we had to self sooth with Conspiracy Theory.

Thanks again 1911user

Then never read the book. You’ll never sleep again. They butchered the book for the movie.

Used to read all kinds of books devoted to the military/war genre. I can't, and won't read them anymore.

I was afraid that was what had happened. Thanks for posting an all-OK update. If you haven't seen The Hurt Locker, give it a few days before watching, seriously. It also has some intense moments.

The Sum of All Fears book was much better than the movie IMHO although the movie really wasn't bad. The book was one of Clancy's best and I read most of them. Red Storm Rising is still probably my favorite though.

Ya, that was a classic Hollywood hack job on a very well written novel by a well known and well respected author.

Amazingly, Hollywood changed the attackers from the original Jihadi terrorists to aging Nazis of all things. How quaint, lazy, politically correct and just plain tedious. Especially for a movie made in May, 2002, who was worried about Nazis nuking the planet?

wiki, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sum_of_All_Fears_(film)

While the basic plot is the same in the movie as in the book, there were significant changes. Noting these substantial changes, in the commentary track on the DVD release, Tom Clancy jokingly introduced himself as "the author of the book that he [director Phil Alden Robinson, who is present with Clancy] ignored."

Perhaps the largest change were the original terrorists. In the novel, they were Arab nationalists, but in the film, they were changed to neo-fascists. A common misconception is that this was done as a reaction to the September 11, 2001 attacks, but the movie finished filming in June 2001.

On the "making-of" DVD extra, director Alden Robinson said that the change was purely for elements relating to the plot, because Arab terrorists would not be able to plausibly accomplish all that was necessary for the story to work. In addition, the terrorists in the book received significant aid from elements in East Germany, a country which had ceased to exist before the novel was even published. The group Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) did mount a two-year lobbying campaign that ended on January 26, 2001, against using "Muslim villains", as the original book version did.[10]

Screenwriter Dan Pyne claimed that the decision to not use Arab terrorists was "possibly because that has become a cliché. At the time that I started writing The Sum of All Fears, Jörg Haider was just starting to come into play in Austria. And simultaneous with that, I think, there was some neo-nationalist activity in Holland, and there was stuff going on in Spain and in Italy. So it seemed like a logical and lasting idea that would be universal."[11] It has also been noted that a larger percent of profits stems from international audiences, and American filmmakers work to avoid alienating large segments of this customer base.[11]

A LOT of people ragged on Hurt Locker.

Something about not "REAL" or some such.

The guys I knew who were involved in the filming etc were damn happy with the representation of the experience...since they had all BTDT in one way or another.
