It's movie time on TB2K again. Here are a variety of movies to help kick back from the real world if only for a few hours.
I'm putting each in a separate post. That should make it easier to comment, discuss, or like a specific choice.
If you watch or download a movie, please comment or like it to guide future selections.
The movie mix comes from youtube and archive.org. That will continue for the future.
Click the "movies" tag at top to see a list of previous movie threads.
Click on an individual movie poster to see it full size.
The movie trailers are located in post #6.

Enjoy the Show!

The first movie is Monte Walsh. This 2003 western stars Tom Selleck as a cowboy dealing with the end of the wild west as the end of the 19th century draws near.

Monte Walsh is a story about times changing and how that impacts the lives of those that need for times to stay the same. It's a character study, not a Cowboys and Indians shoot them up. It does have enough gun play to keep the most traditional Western fan happy, but don't watch it for that. Watch for the great characterization by Selleck, a very good supporting cast, and wonderful cinematography.

The second film is Escape from Sobibor. This 1987 Rutger Hauer movie is about the biggest escape from a nazi death camp during WW2.

During WWII, the death camp at Treblinka had an escape, causing the Commandant at a similar camp in Sobibor to vow that his camp would never experience the same thing. But those who were its captives, the Jewish laborers who had been spared from the ovens, knew they were on borrowed time. That their only hope was to escape..the only question; how to do it. This film is based on a factual account of what happened at Sobibor, Poland in 1943.
Loved Escape from Sobibor. Thanks!

You can watch this on youtube, but there is a similar quality version at archive.org so this movie also has a download link.

The third film is Flying Tigers. This 1942 war film stars John Wayne. It came out at a time when the Allies weren't doing so well in the early part of the war.

John Wayne commands a unit of the famed Flying Tigers, the American Volunteer Group which fought the Japanese in China before America's entry into World War II. He must send his outnumbered band of fighter pilots out against overwhelming odds while juggling the disparate personalities and problems of his fellow flyers. In particular, he must handle the difficulties created by a reckless hot-shot pilot who not only wants to fight a one-man war but to waltz off with his girlfriend.

Flying Tigers- classic wartime pro-American propaganda movie. Cheesy special effects (miniatures/models), black hats (Japanese), white hats (Americans), heroic struggling Chinese, love interests, interpersonal conflict, this one has it all.

Plus my favorite character actor - the P-40 Warhawk :D. That was the bird my dad pulled wenches on from North Africa till VE Day. A real workhorse.

The fourth film is Changeling. This 1980 movie stars George C. Scott (yes, Patton) in a ghostly haunted house film. This was well received by the critics and the public. It also won a few awards.

A composer and music professor loses his wife and daughter in a tragic accident. Seeking solace, he moves into an old mansion unoccupied for twelve years. But a child-like presence seems to be sharing the house, and trying to share its secrets, with him. Through research into the house's past and a seance held within, he discovers the horrific secret of the house's past, a secret that the presence will no longer allow to be kept.

- A man whose family is killed in a road accident retires to a lonely mansion and begins to experience supernatural occurrences linked to the house's mysterious past and its previous owners.

The fifth film is Treasure Island. This 1950 Disney classic is based on Robert Louis Stevenson's novel.

- The treasure seeking adventures of young Jim Hawkins and pirate captain Long John Silver.

Squire Trelawney, Dr. Livesey and Jim Hawkins are enchanted by the idea of locating treasure buried by pirate captain Flint, so they charter a sailing voyage to a Caribbean island. Unfortunately, a large number of Flint's old pirate crew are aboard the ship, including Long John Silver.

I like the 2003 version of Monte Walsh very much, not so much the 1970 version. The book the movie is based on was written by Jack Schaefer, who also wrote Shane. The character of Monte was inspired by a friend of ours who lived outside Santa Fe. He gave me my first experiences working with range cattle and I'll always be grateful.

The Tom Selleck version of Monty Walsh I own on DVD. I have watched it maybe 50 times.
The Lee Marvin one I have seen only once when I was a teenager.
I wouldn't mind seeing it again for comparison to the Selleck version.

To me, no one does cowboy better than Tom Selleck (unless it is Sam The Man Elliott). I had enjoyed Monte Walsh back when it was first released and just enjoyed it again :D Appreciate the reminder...

I like Tom Selleck movies and would like to find Crossfire Trail and Last Stand at Saber River for threads like this.
I have a 3 dvd set with those 2 plus Monte Walsh. I'll keep watching for them.

Can you please explain how to download our own choices at archive? I looked around and am stumped.

This is the page for Treasure Island from archive.org. The red arrow pointing at MPEG4 is the file you want to save.
That is MP4 format which is common and often the only option. You don't want OGG Video or Torrent.
For windows, just right click on it then select Save Link As:

Does that help?
