First up this week is HEAT. This 1995 movie is a crime action masterpiece by Michael Mann. It stars Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer, Jon Voight, and others. An experienced high-value robbery crew is pursued by an experienced police robbery/homicide crew in the streets of LA. The long shooting sequence is legendary. It's also an example of small unit fire and maneuver tactics done well.
This has an 8.2 out of 10 rating by 536,000 people (the rating numbers will be important later)

- A Los Angeles Crime Saga

The 2rd feature is MONTY PYTHON'S LIFE OF BRIAN. This 1979 comedy stars the Monty Python crew. This has an 8.3 out of 10 rating by 340,000 people.

- Born on the original Christmas in the stable next door to Jesus, Brian of Nazareth spends his life being mistaken for a messiah.
- A motion picture destined to offend nearly two thirds of the civilized world. And severely annoy the other third.
- The film that is so funny it was banned in Norway.

The 3rd film is DJANGO UNCHAINED. This 2012 film is another Quentin Tarantino masterpiece. If you have not heard of a "Tarantino" film, they tend to be violent, non-PC, non-moral, and earn their R rating. They also have an interesting story with quirky humor. This film is set in the slave-owning south in 1858. It shows the attitudes, and brutality, towards black slaves of the time, especially run-away slaves. The n-word is very common. This is a violent movie, but it's also surprisingly funny and well done.
If you are not sure about this film, click the review link below to learn more and watch the trailer below.

It currently has an 8.4 out of 10 rating by 1.2 million people on IMDB. That's a very high rating by a large number of people.

- A freed slave helps a german bounty hunter who then helps him find his wife.

The 4th film is RIO LOBO. This is a 1970 John Wayne and Howard Hawks western set at the end of the civil war.

-Colonel Cord McNally, an ex-Union Officer teams up with a couple of ex-Confederate Rebels to search for the traitor who sold information to the South during the Civil War. Their quest brings them to the town of Rio Lobo, where they help recover this little Texas town from ruthless outlaws who are led by the traitor, for whom they were looking.

1911user, thanks! More to look forward to this weekend and even next week if I'm shut in because of the predicted rain!

I've enjoyed a lot of the movies you've posted for us up until now and I hope you can keep posting more as the weeks go by. I especially liked the list of links you provided a few weeks ago so it was easy to find several weeks worth of these threads. It helped me find lots of movies to watch.

The Mountain

Here since the beginning

We just watched Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo and Juliet" tonight. It still amazes me how well the story translates to present day southern California. I wish there were more Shakespeare remakes like this one. Most Shakespeare movies are either period pieces (Much Ado About Nothing, King Lear, Henry V, Hamlet etc), or unrecognizable (Lion King). The only ones I'm aware of that are proper Shakespeare in a reimagined setting are the Luhrmann one, and Throne Of Blood.

Ragnarok

On and On, South of Heaven
Django Unchained is really a pretty good movie... It is one of a handful that I have enjoyed more than once ( I rarely want to sit through the same movie twice - My record is sitting through 6 showings of Star Wars when it just came out. The theatre used to have 2 showings a night and would allow you to sit through the second show without having to pay for another ticket... Ahhhh, the good ol days... )

Have you seen Joss Whedon's 2012 black-and-white version of "Much Ado About Nothing" with Nathan Fillon and Sean Maher (from "Firefly") in supporting roles? The setting looks like modern southern California and there are cars and guns, but the dialogue is pure Shakespeare.

trailer video for Much Ado About Nothing wouldn't embed, but here's the link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vgx99BzMw1A

This song is from the movie, although it's a static image rather than scenes from the movie (maybe Jed Whedon is Joss Whedon's brother?):

Sigh No More (Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon, 2012, 2:34) - from Joss Whedon's 2012 movie "Much Ado About Nothing" and apparently written (more-or-less) by William Shakespeare (with quotes drawn from his 1598 play)

Looks like a squeal to Django Unchained is coming out soon...

Several years after the events of Django Unchained, Django meets Don Diego de la Vega, the famed Zorro, and agrees to become his bodyguard on a mission to free the local indigenous population from slavery.

Also Kill Bill 3 next year.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Heat.
That Michael Mann masterpiece came out in 1995 and it's dead now?
When I found it on youtube several days ago, my first thought was that I had just found movie gold.

EDIT: the Django/Zorro movie could be interesting.

Hey, ALL the movies your'e posting are gold. You have every week posted something for everyone, GOOD movies, not this crap that passes today as "entertainment".
I'm thankful you post these respites from this screwed up world every week. Carnival of Souls, Rio Lobo, Seven days in May? Fantastic movies! You're bringing a lot of joy to the TB2K family with these movies. Keep it up, it's like the Friday night dance party-everyone looks forward to it!

I watched Life of Brian and Rio Lobo last night (up way too late.) GREAT movies!!!! Wife and I actually had dinner and a few days of fun with Christopher Mitchum (the sgt. in Rio Lobo) at the Happy trails convention in Roanoke, VA last month. Awesome man, funny, witty, full of faith and conservative with a capital C. And a damned good actor too!

Here's an interesting aside to this movie. The original cut of the film was longer-they had to pare it down for TV. But, someone has found the deleted scenes from the movie, and spliced them into the TV version. Basically it's the original, uncut The Day After and the deleted scenes fill in a lot of backstory to what you see in the TV version.

It's on Youtube at this link.

And for the Ultimate film that changed MAD after it aired:
