First up this week is THE FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX. This 1965 desert survival movie stars James Stewart, Richard Attenborough, Hardy Kruger, Ernest Borgnine, and Peter Finch.

- A routine flight in an old flying box car with a broken radio, carrying a group of tired oil workers and worn out tools, encounters a fierce sand storm in the Sahara desert. The men are hundreds of miles from rescue, and nobody knows where they are. With zero chance of rescue and a 10 days supply of water, the group is forced to make a decision. Wait to die or build a flyable airplane using the salvaged parts of the wrecked flying boxcar.

I absolutely LOVE the Jimmy Stewart version of Phoenix.

The second movie is THE WORLD MADE STRAIGHT. This 2015 drama stars Noah Wyle (of the TV show ER fame -254 episodes!). Filmed in Asheville, NC, the scenery is stunning. This is a gritty drama about life for an older teen in early 1970's Appalachia. It's also about an adult (Wyle) who grew up there, made it out then lost everything, and is learning to live again.

- In a rural Appalachian community haunted by the legacy of a Civil War massacre, a rebellious young man struggles to escape the violence that would bind him to the past.

The third movie is DARK ANGEL. This 1990 Dolph Lundgren film is about a smart cop trying to stop an alien drug dealer while saddled with a by-the-book young FBI agent. You might remember the movie tagline: I COME IN PEACE. It has good action, interesting weapons, interesting people, and a new drug that the galaxy can not be allowed to learn about.

- Jack Caine (Dolph Lundgren) is a Houston vice cop who's forgotten the rule book. His self-appointed mission is to stop the drug trade and the number one supplier Victor Manning. While involved in an undercover operation to entrap Victor Manning, his partner gets killed, and a sinister newcomer enters the scene... Along with F.B.I. agent Lawrence Smith, the two investigate a spate of mysterious deaths; normal non-junkies dying of massive heroin overdoses and bearing the same horrific puncture marks on the forehead. This, coupled with Caine's own evidence, indicates an alien force is present on the streets of Houston, killing and gathering stocks of a rare drug found only in the brain... Caine is used to fighting the toughest of criminals, but up to now they've all been human.

The last few films are 1960's Christmas TV favorites: Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, The Little Drummer Boy, A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965 version), How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966 version).

These are all on www.archive.org. I provide 2 links to play each show. The first should take you there and probably start the movie. If the first link doesn't work, try clicking the second link. It'll open that page on archive.org, but you'll have to click the start arrow once or twice to start the video. Once started, click the button to expand to full screen.

Last week, we discovered that older Internet Explorer browsers may have issues with archive.org. My 2 suggestions for that are a different browser (I use firefox) or download the file and once complete, play as a file using windows media player.

1911user, you always post great stuff, thanks!

Your inclusion of Rudolph, Frosty, and the Little Drummer Boy has me wondering if everybody would like a thread of all free Christmas movies? I've been thinking about it for a while now, in these past few weeks leading up to Christmas, and I know of several on YouTube.

Don’t forget “A Charlie Brown Christmas”, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”, and “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer”.

Any Christmas movie thread needs those.

Feel free to add them. I'll adjust the title.

EDIT: Charlie Brown and Grinch found. Added to first post and thread title adjusted for many Christmas shows.

The Homecoming: A Christmas Story (1971)

This television movie introduced America to the Waltons, of the long-running series of the same name. There are several differences to the cast, but all of the children and Grandma are the same as the series.

I love Patricia Neal's performance in this film!

Here's description from IMDB:

The Walton family is preparing for Christmas in the early 1930s. It's Christmas eve and they are waiting for father Walton to come home from his job in the city some 50 miles away. Since he is late, everyone is worried and over the radio the mother and grandparents hear about an overturned bus and hurt travelers but keep this news from the rest of the family. The story is really a coming of age story about the oldest son JohnBoy who must cut down the tree with his grandfather since his father isn't home and is eventually told about his missing father and sets out to find him. An all round heartwarming story, especially if you are a fan of The Waltons. A simple story about a simple family in simple times. Great family entertainment!

Flight of the Phoenix? First rate movies this week.

On TB every waking moment
You're going to ruin my reputation as a moviephobe. I watched The World Made Straight tonight, for the Appalachian connection, after watching The Day of the Siege on Amazon Prime earlier this afternoon.

Straight was pretty good, it did not get overly bogged down in stereotypes and the history it represented was reasonably accurate as I understand it.

Thanks for the classic Rudolph and Frosty links. I know what will be on the TV here for Christmas!
Just do a test watching :) to be sure they play OK for you.

-------------------------
Dozdoats, it seems that we both like movies that have some historical aspects. I have Winter's Bone on my list of movies to find. It is similar to the style and setting of World made Straight. It's about meth-effected rural Missouri and an older teen girl trying to keep a family together. You might check if Prime has it available.

I thought it might be on the Prime free list since it is a 2010 movie. The star is a young Jennifer Lawrence before she did the Hunger Games series.

I'm going to bump this due to the Christmas content.
Be sure to notice the 2 Christmas movies that StarryEyedLad added.

if you have the ISPN channel on cable - it's covering most of the Walton movies and the Christmas episodes >>> the Waltons is a regular daily offering in the late afternoons ...

It's there - for anyone else who might be interested, see Watch Winter's Bone | Prime Video

Doesn't seem to be free on Prime however.
That's a good one. I saw it free on Tubitv using my Comcast streaming device but I suspect it's available with Roku, too.

Watch it on your computer with your adblocker off:

Aw man. Winter's Bone is a half dozen full force kicks to the gut on a good day...but at Christmas?! I don't think I would have the heart! :(
Have you seen World Made Straight? It's not exactly an easy movie either, but both are well done IMHO.
