It's movie time on TB2K again. Here are a variety of movies to help kick back from the real world if only for a few hours.
I'm putting each in a separate post. That should make it easier to comment, discuss, or like a specific choice.
The movie mix comes from youtube and archive.org. I doubt that will change in the future.
Click on an individual movie poster if you would like to see it full size.
Click the "movies" tag at top to see a list of previous movie threads.
The movie trailers are located in post #6.

Enjoy the Show!

EDIT: This is a movie that has been out for 20 years so spoilers are an issue especially for this film.
If Fight Club seems interesting and you plan to watch it for the first time, don't read past the movie trailers in post#6 before watching. This is a movie worth seeing without reading the script and learning any surprises from a review first.
---------------------------------------------------------------

First up is Fight Club. This 1999 classic answers the question "who is Tyler Durden?". The movie stars Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, and Meat Loaf (the singer like you've never seen before). This is a high quality video and being from archive.org, you can download it.

A nameless first person narrator (Edward Norton) attends support groups in attempt to subdue his emotional state and relieve his insomniac state. When he meets Marla, another fake attendee of support groups, his life seems to become a little more bearable. However when he associates himself with Tyler (Brad Pitt) he is dragged into an underground fight club and soap making scheme. Together the two men spiral out of control and engage in competitive rivalry for love and power. When the narrator is exposed to the hidden agenda of Tyler's fight club, he must accept the awful truth that Tyler may not be who he says he is.

- An insomniac office worker and a devil-may-care soapmaker form an underground fight club that evolves into something much, much more.

- The IMDB rating for this is 8.8 out of 10 by 1,700,00 people (a very high score by a huge number of people)

- This movie is somewhat weird and earns its' R rating. I've linked to the content advisory below. If in doubt, you should read it.

The second movie is Dragon Day, also known as Invasion Day. This 2013 indie film is a B-grade survival adventure into what happens if China decides the US is never going to repay its' debt.

When out-of-work engineer Duke Evans and his family try to rebuild their lives in a remote mountain town, their own version of the American Dream is cut short on the day a devastating cyberattack destroys the U.S. as we know it. Every microchip 'Made in China' has been infected with a virus that rapidly shuts down all modern technology. The aftermath happens fast, and as the rule of law, water, and food run out, Duke and his family must use all their wits and the unlikely help of Alonso, an illegal immigrant, to survive this frighteningly realistic scenario.

- A family getaway to a mountain town turns deadly when China launches a massive cyberattack against the USA, forcing former NSA engineer Duke Evans to fight to save his wife and daughter in the New World Order.

- Note that the video quality is fine, but the volume on this movie is LOW. Plan to turn the volume up higher than normal when watching. One youtube comment was to listen using headphones.

The third movie is The Sacketts. This 1979 2-part mini-series is based on the Louis Lamour novel and was posted late Sunday last week. I'm listing it again to be sure those interested see it's available. It stars Sam Elliot, Tom Selleck, and many other familiar traditional actors. It is split into 2 parts (3 hours total). I'm fairly certain that the source for this was VHS videotapes so don't expect high quality.

- Two part television adaptation of Louis L'Amour's third novel in the Sackett series. The story follows the three Sackett brothers out west from their Tennessee home. Along the way, the oldest, Tell, prospects for gold, while the two younger Orin and Tye herd cattle and help bring order to a racially divided Santa Fe.

You can watch the Sacketts on youtube OR archive.org (this is a first, I think). It's the best of both options.
Also, you can download it for future viewing from archive.org with the link at the bottom.

The fourth movie is the The Beastmaster. This 1982 film goes back to the fantasy adventure films of the early 80's. This stars Marc Singer (never wearing a shirt) and Tanya Roberts (who keeps her shirt on) :p

- A sword-and-sorcery fantasy about a young man's search for revenge. Armed with supernatural powers, the handsome hero and his animal allies wage war against marauding forces.

The fifth movie is The Bird with the Crystal Plumage. This 1970 Italian film (in English and good quality video) is a "Giallo" film.

Our own Red Baron describes giallo films and links to a detailed video on giallo films in his post linked below:
"They are essentially stylish pulp murder mysteries usually featuring a masked, black gloved killer preying on nubile ladies, often of questionable repute.
The authorities are usually a day late and a lire short, the ladies wear and often doff the latest fashions at the drop of a calzone, red herrings abound, everybody smokes two packs a day and the J&B flows like a river. "
PLAY - Poll about TB2K weekend movies <<<----- Red Baron post about Giallo

This is supposed to be a very good example of a giallo film.
I thought the idea interesting and something maybe others would like to see more of. Please comment/like if you want more.

Oh, you'd like to actually know something about the film itself.... :D

- An American expatriate in Rome witnesses an attempted murder. He learns later that it's connected to an ongoing murder spree in the city, and decides to do his own investigation, despite being personally targeted by the killer.

I believe your description is incorrect for fight club. I was always under the impression that the ed norton and brad pitt characters were the same person with ed norton suffering from some kind of hallucination or mental illness. Your description makes it sound like they were in fact 2 different people. I'm assuming you copied the text from somewhere.

Loved the stories and books of Louis L'Amour. The Sacketts were just a small tasty sample of the other stories this prolific author has to share.

"Giallo" translates to Yellow.

Giallo films are inspired by tawdry dime store novels that featured a yellow cover.

Giallo movies were very popular from the late 60's to the early 80's in Europe. Giallo predates the domestic slasher craze of the 80's.

I enjoy the political incorrectness of Giallo films. A refreshing change from many modern films.

If you enjoy the CSI and SVU type shows, you will be right at home with a Giallo.

I have watched fight club in the past and watched it again 2 nights ago.
I don't plan to change the description about fight club.
Discovery of true reality is a big part of watching the movie.
I did add a statement to be wary of spoilers if they were going to watch it for the first time.
That seems to be a good compromise especially on older films.
It's not right for people who have seen the film to be restricted about discussing it.

I kinda remember seeing The Bird with the Crystal Plumage when I was in high school. I do remember that GF & I had the plot figured out to learn at the end that we were exactly wrong.

Giallo's are famous for throwing out "red herrings". It's actually part of the "formula".

You need to use the provided youtube link if possible. I think the issue could be that you are searching for "dragon day" and youtube does want to rent that to you, but it's a different video. If you have to search youtube (on the TV), search for "Invasion Day (full-length movie)". That is the exact title of the version I linked.

I just finished watching The Bird with the Crystal Plumage. Very interesting and exactly as Red Baron described. Hopefully others like the Giallo style of movie as well.
