First up is the original Night of the Living Dead from 1968 by George Romero.

A ragtag group of Pennsylvanians barricade themselves in an old farmhouse to remain safe from a bloodthirsty, flesh-eating breed of monsters who are ravaging the East Coast of the United States.

This was made on a tight budget. There were no big stars but it has zombies :)

Second part of the double feature is the terror classic The Cassandra Crossing from 1976.

Passengers on a European train have been exposed to a deadly disease. Nobody will let them off the train. So what happens next?

A trainload of European and American travelers becomes doomed when a medical terrorist infected with bubonic plague stows away and brings the deadly disease on board.

Lots of stars in this film. Sophia Loren, Marten Sheen, OJ Simpson, Richard Harris, Ava Gardner, Burt Lancaster, etc.

There was a remake of Night of the Living Dead released in 1990. It's actually a pretty big departure from the original. Cooper goes from gruff but helpful to being a complete jerk and, toward the end, homicidal jackass. Comparing the two actually reveals some novel points.

The biggest question you'll ask is "why didn't they just destroy the stairs?"

Yeah, the remake wasn't too bad over all. Better than I would've expected.

Exactly! I want to yell this when I see the movies. Chop the stairs to bits with axes, and stay upstairs until you can figure something else out! Take the supplies upstairs and you can always use bedsheets to get out the upper story windows when the zombies disperse or help comes.

I've given this waaay too much thought.

I'm surprised it's free on YouTube. The other film sounds good, too. I've never seen it.

It shouldn't surprise you. The original has been public domain since like 2012, if I remember right.

Personally, I say the remake is worth it for that shot of Cooper's daughter as a zombie lurching toward Ben and Barbara, while Cooper actually COVERS HIS DAUGHTER from the stairs. Best shot in the whole movie and one of the best sequences EVER.

And they didn't even need axes. They had hammers, wrenches, all manner of whatnot from trying to board up the house. They almost certainly could have taken out half the stairwell before a zombie even figured out where the window was.

Just did some searching, and apparently the original 1968 film was never properly copyrighted when first released, so it never had copyright protection at all. I did enjoy the remake almost as much as the original.

There's been a couple of remakes besides the 1990 one as well, with even bigger changes.

Night of the Living Dead 3D (2006)

(saw this one)

Night of the Living Dead (2014)

(haven't seen this one)

Both of these films are old favorites of mine!

See if you can find a copy of “Colossus: The Forbin Project” out there for one of the weeks, a very early version of “Skynet”. Scary stuff.

I could not find the 1990 night of the living dead remake on youtube unless you pay to watch it. If someone else can find it complete, post a link.
There is one that claims to the 1990 version, but it's really the original '68 version.

Trying to hang out with the cool kids.
Will watch the Cassandra Crossing tonight! I don't do Zombie movies, anymore. Bad dreams! Please post if the Andromeda Strain becomes a freebie!

Ooh, ya know, collecting movie requests and trying to fulfill that list over the weeks would be cool!

Post 'em, but realize anything really popular or famous is unlikely on youtube for long. I don't know of another source to find movies that don't come with viruses or malware or could cause legal trouble.
Also, Colossus the Forbin Project is not available unless you pay a few dollars to youtube. It's a good movie though.

Andromeda Strain is on youtube for $4. It won't ever be free from there. It's too famous and a good movie.
I was surprised to find the audiobook for Andromeda Strain (8 hours; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4CTnSlYvdw) though.

Oh yeah the original night of the living dead. Great movie and one of the few horror movies I'd actually watch.

LOVE the Andromeda Strain. Had no clue there was a remake, but I'll take your advice and skip it. The original is a favorite of mine.

Another movie for Friday doom theater might be The last man on earth, starring Vincent Price. Think it's free on Youtube.

Or, the Omega Man with Charlton Heston. Great doom movie!

Try the remake of NOTLD. The differences will prove surprising!

Something interesting about The Cassandra Crossing---the couple that solves the mystery are named Jennifer and Jonathon, with a sidekick named Max (Lionel Stander). The tv show Hart to Hart has a mystery solving couple named Jennifer and Jonathon with a sidekick named Max played by Lionel Stander.

The Hart to Hart show came 3 years later. I remember watching it every week. Good fun.
There must be a spin-off connection between the movie and the TV show.
