It's an unusual mix this week. I hope people can find at least one that is interesting.

It's movie time on TB2K again. Here are a variety of movies to help kick back from the real world if only for a few hours.
I'm putting each in a separate post. That should make it easier to comment, discuss, or like a specific choice.
If you watch or download a movie, please comment or like it to guide future selections.
The movie mix comes from youtube and archive.org. That will continue for the future.

The first movie is The Shape of Water. This 2017 adventure fantasy/romance by Guillermo del Toro stars Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer, and Michael Shannon. Guillermo is famous for Hellboy and many other films.

- At a top secret research facility in the 1960s, a lonely janitor forms a unique relationship with an amphibious creature that is being held in captivity.

From master storyteller Guillermo del Toro comes THE SHAPE OF WATER, an otherworldly fable set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1962. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is trapped in a life of isolation. The second movie is 3 Days to Kill. This 2014 action (with some comedy) movie stars Kevin Costner, Amber Heard, and Connie Nelson. This has arab subtitles, but otherwise good quality.

- A dying CIA agent trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter is offered an experimental drug that could save his life in exchange for one last assignment.

The third movie is Superman. This 1978 classic stars Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, and Gene Hackman.

- An alien orphan is sent from his dying planet to Earth, where he grows up to become his adoptive home's first and greatest superhero.

Just before the destruction of the planet Krypton, scientist Jor-El sends his infant son Kal-El on a spaceship to Earth. Raised by kindly farmers Jonathan and Martha Kent, young Clark discovers the source of his superhuman powers and moves to Metropolis to fight evil. As Superman, he battles the villainous Lex Luthor, while, as novice reporter Clark Kent, he attempts to woo co-worker Lois Lane

The fourth movie is Meet John Doe. This 1941 Frank Capra classic stars Gary Cooper, Barbara Stanwyck, Edward Arnold and Walter Brennan. This has both a youtube and archive.org link. The archive.org version is somewhat better quality.

As a parting shot, fired reporter Ann Mitchell prints a fake letter from unemployed "John Doe," who threatens suicide in protest of social ills. The paper is forced to rehire Ann and hires John Willoughby to impersonate "Doe." Ann and her bosses cynically milk the story for all it's worth, until the made-up "John Doe" philosophy starts a whole political movement. At last everyone, even Ann, takes her creation seriously...but publisher D.B. Norton has a secret plan.

The fifth movie is It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. This 1963 adventure comedy stars Spencer Tracy, Milton Berle, Ethyl Merman, Buddy Hackett, Mickey Rooney, and Sid Ceaser.

- A group of motorists hear about a crook's hidden stash of loot, and race against each other across the country to get to it.

After a long prison sentence Smiler Grogan is heading at high speed to a California park where he hid $350,000 from a job 15 years previously. He accidentally careens over a cliff in view of four cars whose occupants go down to help. The dying Grogan gives details of where the money is buried and when the witnesses fail to agree on sharing the cash, a crazy chase develops across the state.

The sixth movie is Yojimbo. This 1961 Japanese classic is the original version with English subtitles. It stars film legend Toshiro Mifune. This is a Criterion Collection movie.
This was the first movie based on the idea of a mercenary fighter playing 2 gangs against each other for their own profit.
This movie plot was used again in A Fistful of Dollars (Clint Eastwood) and Last Man Standing (Bruce Willis). Sergio Leone did not get permission to remake the film as A Fistful of Dollars. The legal settlement was 15% of the profits from the Clint Eastwood movie.

Sanjuro, a wandering samurai enters a rural town in nineteenth century Japan. After learning from the innkeeper that the town is divided between two gangsters, he plays one side off against the other. His efforts are complicated by the arrival of the wily Unosuke, the son of one of the gangsters, who owns a revolver. Unosuke has Sanjuro beaten after he reunites an abducted woman with her husband and son, then massacres his father's opponents. During the slaughter, the samurai escapes with the help of the innkeeper; but while recuperating at a nearby temple, he learns of innkeeper's abduction by Unosuke, and returns to the town to confront him.

This is always a pleasure to watch. slapstick comedy, lots of cracking wise and just FUN. .... D_A

You found Yojimbo????? WOW. It's a good movie. The others tonight are rock solid too. It's a Mad mad mad world is one funny movie, and meet John Doe is great too.
Downloading all of them tonight; never seen the others. Looks like the missus might need to make a BIG bowl of popcorn tonight!

Got a suggestion for movie night. Try and find Munchausen-made in Germany in 1943 (not a war movie, it's a hilarous comedy!) People might enjoy that one immensely, it's a hoot to watch.

Also, it may not be proper for a movie night, but how about Triumph of the Will? Sure it's a Nazi made movie, but it's an interesting study in how movies began to be used for propaganda purposes. It was made in what, 1934, 1935?

A good war movie suggestion might be Der Untergang (Downfall). It's a movie about the last days of Hitler and the 3rd Reich. It's a German movie that came out in 2004. With subtitles it makes for a good movie to watch. It's probably the most accurate depiction of the battle of Berlin and Hitler's bunker I've ever seen.

I just watched the Andromena Strain I downloaded a while back. Great movie and no pc drivel. The new version I saw has Rick Schroeder as a gay Army doctor who saves the day but dies. I will suggest "The Blind Swordsman" if you like Samauri comedy type movies.

I just discovered that The Shape of Water is missing forerign subtitles. They first show up at 35 minutes into the movie. For anyone who downloads the movie, add the attached foreign-only subtitles when you play the movie. The file will have to be unzipped first. I hate when this happens. I simply don't have time to watch all of them in advance. Also, it wasn't obvious, but this movie has some sexuality and nudity. The IMDB link has the details if that matters.
