It's movie time on TB2K again. Here are a variety of movies to help kick back from the real world if only for a few hours.
I'm putting each in a separate post. That should make it easier to comment, discuss, or like a specific choice.
If you watch or download a movie, please comment or like it to guide future selections.
Click the "movies" tag at top to see a list of previous movie threads.

The movie trailers are located in post #7.

Enjoy the Show!

The first movie is Idiocracy. This 2006 Mike Judge sci-fi comedy stars Luke Wilson, Maya Rudolph, Dax Shepard, and Terry Crews. Mike Judge is famous for the movie Office Space and the cartoon show Beavis and Butthead.

US Army librarian Joe Bauers is handpicked by the military to partake in a top secret military project involving suspended animation. He is selected for his average personality. Unfortunately, the project is abruptly shut down after the officer in charge of the experiment is arrested for his involvement in a corruption scandal. Joe is left in his pod for 500 years. After he manages to escape from the pod, Joe finds himself in a society that has been incredibly dumbed down over the past few centuries. After an IQ test reveals Joe to be the most intelligent person alive, he is selected to become the Secretary of Interior in the hopes that he can alleviate many of the problems facing the country. Can Joe save the day? And can he find any way to get himself back in time?

The second movie is Clear and Present Danger. This 1994 action drama is based on the Tom Clancy novel and stars Harrison Ford, Willem Dafoe, Anne Archer, and James Earl Jones. Unfortunately this has asian subtitles and I couldn't find another version without them.

Jack Ryan is back and this time the bad guys are in his own government. When Admiral James Greer becomes sick with cancer, Ryan is appointed acting CIA Deputy Director of Intelligence. Almost before he can draw a breath in his new position, one of the president's closest friends and his family are murdered by what appears to by drug cartels. Ryan is called in to investigate, but unknown to him the CIA has already sent a secret field operative to lead an paramilitary force in Colombia against cartels. Things get even more complicated when his CIA team is set up and he loses an agent in the field and the dead agent's secretary is murdered that same day. Ryan must risk not only his career, but his life to expose the truth behind the mystery.

The third movie is Zulu Dawn. This 1979 action drama stars Burt Lancaster, Simon Ward, and Denholm Elliott. This film takes place just before the famous 1964 film Zulu about the attack on Rorke's Drift. This is available on archive.org and youtube.

In 1879 South Africa, the administrators of the British Cape Colony have designs to eliminate the Zulus as a hindrance to their colonial economy. To that end, the British present King Cetshwayo with an impossible ultimatum to provoke a war they are sure they can win easily with their rifles and artillery against native spears. However, that war proves more difficult than the arrogant British commander, Lord Chelmsford, expects as his overburdened army fruitlessly searches for the elusive enemy. However, in the shadow of a hill called Isandlwana, the overconfident British army learns to its sorrow just how badly they have underestimated the tactical skill and might of the Zulu nation.

The fourth movie is Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory. This 1971 fantasy film stars Gene Wilder, Jack Albertson, and Peter Ostrum. This is a high quality version of this film.

The world is astounded when Willy Wonka, for years a recluse in his factory, announces that five lucky people will be given a tour of the factory, shown all the secrets of his amazing candy, and one will win a lifetime supply of Wonka chocolate. Nobody wants the prize more than young Charlie, but as his family is so poor that buying even one bar of chocolate is a treat, buying enough bars to find one of the five golden tickets is unlikely in the extreme. But in movieland, magic can happen. Charlie, along with four somewhat odious other children, get the chance of a lifetime and a tour of the factory. Along the way, mild disasters befall each of the odious children, but can Charlie beat the odds and grab the brass ring?

The fifth movie is Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. This 1939 Frank Capra political classic stars Jimmy Stewart, Jean Arthur, Claude Rains, and Edward Arnold. This is the restored version of the film.

- A naive man is appointed to fill a vacancy in the United States Senate. His plans promptly collide with political corruption, but he doesn't back down.

Naive and idealistic Jefferson Smith, leader of the Boy Rangers, is appointed on a lark by the spineless governor of his state. He is reunited with the state's senior senator--presidential hopeful and childhood hero, Senator Joseph Paine. In Washington, however, Smith discovers many of the shortcomings of the political process as his earnest goal of a national boys' camp leads to a conflict with the state political boss, Jim Taylor. Taylor first tries to corrupt Smith and then later attempts to destroy Smith through a scandal.

My favorite thread on TB2K and more great movies to download! Willy Wonka-saw it as a kid at the drive in; loved the fun and promise that movie presented. It was like a candy store on acid, watching it as an adult. Great fun!
Clear and present danger, never saw this one but always wanted to. Thank you! Idiocracy looks like fun, and Mr. Smith goes to Washington is a good clean and relevant movie for these times.
Minister of culture and enlightenment, as always I bow before your greatness! Thank you for another group of sanity saving movies tonight!

You are going to love the movie.

The novel was even better.
Clear and Present Danger is a good movie, and yes the book is better.
At least Alec Baldwin isn't playing Jack Ryan in this one. :kk1:
I'm just not happy about the forced asian subtitles.

Until tonight, I never watched Idiocracy from start to finish. Thanks for that!

And yes, we are getting closer to that being a reality that it isn't even funny.

I just watched Zulu Dawn tonight. I watched Zulu when you had it a while back. Having "unlimited," Verizon that is limited to 15 GB I have to pick and choose what I download or they screw me with that 600 kp download speed. Did I mention I HATE Verizon and will not suggest it to anybody for anything.

Anyway, I have downloaded about 50 movies or so from Timebomb. If I am not quick off the mark some of them, like the Punisher, or the 4 bond movies just vanish into the ether. Still, I get a lot of them. I have on my computer a bunch of Art Bell/ Malachi Martin Roman Catholic priest with exorcism and papal stuff going back to the late 1990's just before he died/was murdered.

I was always struck how subtle Mr. Smith was. I always thought it was Jimmy Stewart's best performance. He had literally dozens of great movies, including dozens of cracker jack westerns with Director Mann. It seems so quaint now, pathetic in how naive it really was.

Thank you 1911. Your selection of Clear and Present Danger and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington are both very thoughtful, considering what we are all facing within America - affecting the entire world. Both movies are encouraging, stirring up hope that Truth always does, in the end, prevail.

Enemy At The Gates
In World War II, the fall of Stalingrad will mean the collapse of the whole country. The Germans and Russians are fighting over every block, leaving only ruins behind. The Russian sniper Vassili Zaitsev stalks the Germans, taking them out one by one, thus hurting the morale of the German troops. The political officer Danilov leads him on, publishing his efforts to give his countrymen some hope. But Vassili eventually starts to feel that he can not live up to the expectations on him. He and Danilov fall in love with the same girl, Tanya, a female soldier. From Germany comes the master sniper König to put an end to the extraordinary skilled Russian sniper.

I just now finished watching this one on YouTube. It's a not very serious treatment about a hapless guy who gets caught in an experiment at CERN in Geneva and is thrown back in time (along with two scheming twats, a manipulative female model and a jackass of a photographer who immediately tries to organize the natives into communists) to when Nero is the Emperor and the Romans rule Switzerland. The hair styles are pure 1980s, and while the movie title was deliberately changed from "A Switch In Time" to suggest "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" it's really not like that movie at all. I had never heard of it when I first saw it years ago and I've never heard or seen anyone else ever mention it since, so it may be something of an obscure European film (dialog is in English and subtitled Latin) since it doesn't have a single recognizable American actor.
