For anyone who is in a higher tax state, be sure to run your tax return two ways.
1) With the standard deduction
2) With forced itemized deductions.
In a number of states, they did not conform to the feds in how to calculate a tax return. So if you run both scenarios, you may find your overall return, ( state and fed combined) will be better if you force itemization.
Your Tax Preparer should be able to do this at a push of a button. It should not cost extra.
If you are married you should do the same
1) MFJ
2) MFS
You may do better overall if you MFS. Again this is just a push of a button for the people who prepare the taxes. It should not cost extra either, but some like to pretend it does and charge extra. It is just a software issue.
If the software does not do this, you may want to find someone else.
I hope this helps!
